I read this somewhere:
The Military is Sal Glesser's answer to a knife that he would get for his son who would serve on an overseas military deployment.
Sounds like that has been confirmed as a urban legend, but as a father, & a bit of a knife maker it is the kind of question I would ask myself, & I have heard many people ask military guys what they like or would want in a knife which has given us many custom made knives includes ones like the original RTAC (now the ESEE Junglas). I look forward to getting mine tomorrow, & seeing what I think of it for my edc. The ratio of handle to blade always bugged me from a aesthetics standpoint with the Millie, & PM2, but I want more knife then my Tenacious, & it seems like this is the way to go.
In the spyderco box that my military comes in, is confirms, that yes, this was his answer to a knife he would give to his son going into the armed forces.
@@harvestblades it’s not an “urban legend”. It’s literally the story written on the paperwork that comes with a Military, PM2 and Para 3. I own all 3 of them.
It’s on the Spyderco website entry for this knife
@@harvestbladesgo for the resilience in S35vn, i love my resilience. If you don’t like the blue frn scales it comes with then there’s a huge amount of custom scales and hardware out there.
Great review, as always. The story behind the knife is as follows. Sal created the Military as a knife that he would give his son if he was deployed in the military. It had to be lightweight because every ounce counts, it had to be big enough to be useful for everything he would need it, and it had to be comfortable and easy to use with gloves. That glove part is the reason why it has remained a liner lock for decades. It is for these reasons (and more) that this is my favorite knife, and I have a few of them. Unfortunately it isn't a very popular Spyderco compared to the Paramilitary 2 and Para 3 which sell like hot cakes. I would love to see a K390 version and a tanto version, but I don't think that will happen because of its lack of popularity. One can hope though!
I don't own one but I really want one and k390 would be amazing.
It's getting some love now!
Military 2 coming out this year
I've carried a Millie as one of my main "working" folders alongside my ESEE4 for better than 12 years or so. It's a beast, orange G10 scales so I can find it when I drop it, and tough as nails.
The Military is designed to be opened with gloves, hence no compression lock. The liner lock has that huge access to the lock when wearing gloves makes it much easier.
Still hoping Spyderco does a Millie 2 with a 4 position clip and some other steel options. That or a 4” Para.
The Military knife has been previously available in a number of different steels & handle materials.
Or compression lock
And now it comes: Milatary 2 with compression lock and four way carry.
I’m glad your going to review the military. It’s an awesome knife!
Ever wonder how many aliens are carrying spydercos in their space travel and will other galaxies also mark the knives
I've had an S30V one and now carry an M4 C36. It is, to me, the best design functionally-wise Spyderco has. It is SO comfortable for my large hands.
The linerlock is amazing, and has literally no hot spots in use, as opposed to the PM2.
HEY SPYDERCO!
It’s time for a Military 2. 😁
It is coming out this year with a compression lock as four ways to place the pocket clio
I got my first Military 7-8 years ago. About 4 years ago Spyderco did C.Q.I on the knife and body screw size was upgraded, bigger lanyard tube, riveted stop pin etc. Sal designed the knife after someone asked what kind of knife would he want for his son if he were going into Military.
I don’t like big knives (over 3.5”) and most of my knives are either lighter, narrow, good blade/handle ratio and carry well. The Military works for me. Spyderco does liner locks very well. I’ve owned/handled many Militaries/Sage 1’s and they all lock up perfect in the same place. I have plenty of knives that are smooth and fall shut but don’t care. It’s not as beefy as my big MT Socom Elites (manuals) ZT’s, Steel Will Gekko but still strong.
I only buy big knives as a rule. minis are for the big city square heads that have no use for a cutting tool except to play boring fidget games in their living room and dull the blade by slicing cardboard into little strips for some unknown reason!
Just got this same one factory second for $155. Been carrying it for 2 weeks now, seriously one of the best knives I have used, cuts through everything like butter, the steel is good, I live in Oregon, so its nice to know my knife wont start rusting within an hour.
Its a great knife, one of my favorites, I really wish they made more of them with different steels and scales.
I have several Militaries. Absolutely love them. FWIW, my newest S110V version drops shuts beautifully. Personally, I don't care about that, but some folks do. The thing that struck me about this video is that it's obvious the guy never used the knife. Maybe flicked it a few times. Really, it was just dumb. Couldn't finish watching it.
I have the milled full ti. One drops shut like a pm2 and is a reeve frame lock .Very solid option.
I own 3 and two of them have modified tip up carry scales and both have Veff serrations.
The Spyderco Opus by Ulrich Hennicke was intended to be a civilian daily carry oriented knife based on the Military. It has a tip up carry by default with four clip options and a slightly smaller profile. Also found on sale at low prices because the sharp Seki City build and bitey lock release didn't bring much love.
End of 2023, now, for sale at dealers Military 2 in Compression Lock, enlarged finger choil, & added tip-up carry option. Now, we are all waiting for the different flavors!!! Yes, K390 version would be AWESOME!!!
The Spyderco PM2 in Maxamet restocked on Blade HQ. Debating on getting it as my first PM2. Thoughts?
Love my military and how I can throw it and my zt0561 in my rotation whenever I want. Big knives are fun.
I love mine I have the S110v version but i have a solid no play one and drop shuts if I push the liner all the way over but it’s just ever so slightly not centered. I can’t say it came from the factory like that, I dialed it in when I took it apart the first time.
I have the military in cruwear, but a K390 version would be cool. I found back pocket carry of the military works best for me. I also like carrying the socom elite and xmas-24, I don’t mind large knives.
Would you say this is better than the newer model Police 4 Lightweight models? I really like those things in theory....never held one.....but it's down to either this Military or the P4LW. Thanks.
Someone needs to come out with a clip that utilizes the lanyard hole for a place to put a deep carry clip. Maybe one that has a button to push out the clip when you need it. But keeps it close to the handle when not in use.
I'm gonna disagree with you on the compression lock for this knife. I feel like the hand position I use to fidget with a compression lock knife is slightly less secure than a liner lock. If I need to more securely 1-hand close a compression lock knife, I use my thumb (like closing a back lock knife 1 handed, catch the finger choil with my index finger). I'd definitely feel more comfortable manipulating a liner lock knife with a gloved hand than a compression lock. There's probably a really good reason for that huge cutout to reach the nicely serrated liner, too.
If you want to fidget, just get a decently tuned flipper knife (or one with multiple methods of deployment). Bearings, too!
I just ordered the Digital Camo with Black Blade for $210 at DLT Trading. I got the only one they had. I can't wait to get it in my hands.
The Spyderco Military: When the Tenacious and the PM2 have a kid that grows up really tall.
Badass knife! Good video!
Good rev.Looks like a
good knife.Like size and lanyard whole. If ur type of user doesn't
use knives near water, woods,in the air,
wouldn't need one.Lost knives to Davey Jones locker.I carried Endura's for good period,Think might b close size wise.Never had issues with liner locks,
keepem clean don't abuse em.Have fun.
how would you open it with gloves with compression lock?
I have had a millie for about a month same color I love it!!!
Bought one...it made all my PM2s jealous. Didn't like the pocket clip at all so I had to get crafty. If you take the lanyard tube out a standoff (the screw and button for a kydex sheath) for a TecLok is the PERFECT SIZE for that hole....now you have a Tip up pocket clip mod without modifying your scales. BOOM!
Still trying to find this one for sale. No one has had it in stock for a while!
Finally the military buddy! Great video as always.😊👍
The limited version comes in 45VN.
I have the original police in stainless steel and the military in camo scales. Original police slippery and a bit heavy. I carried the military until I got the PM2. Both are legal carry where I live.
Is there a Spyderco knife that wouldn't be great in a compression lock?
Just got delivery of a Military 2 today (11/13/2023). Please do a review. I'm sure you're going to like it. .
Love the vid keep up the good work
I prefer a liner lock not to be "dropshutty" if it can still be deployed with 1 ✋.
Nice work M.C. !!!
It befuddles me to think that after years and years spyderco still hasn't moved the pocket clip.
Sal once said he would change the clip so it didn’t take from 3rd parties. I personally am not bothered by the lanyard hole. But at the same time i don’t daily my Para 3
Watch the NeroKnives videos on why tip down is better for larger knives like this.
still waiting for the para 2 tanto to get back in stock.
You know the polestar reminds me of a smaller version of this knife. The shape isn't exactly the same, but just the idea of it.
Anyone know where I can pick up some scales (custom) for the Military (4")?
Love this knife ,I have three of them ,and I have small hands. What I like about this knife is that it is thin.
The g-10 looks well chamfered. If the pm2 wasn't such a brick I'd like it more.
I want to get my hands on one of these but the blackout version is out of stock everywhere.
I think DLT may have one. I just ordered the last camo version.
I have owned Hoback knives, Reeves, Hinderer and many others. I love titanium handles, flipper tabs are cool. However, after all the knives I have owned, I have come to a final conclusion for myself....If I am in a situation where I have to use the knife I am carrying for protection, and need it fast and efficiently, I absolutely do not want to be trying to open a knife using a flipper tab. I want my finger going into that familiar, easy to find, and huge Spyderco opening hole. (I love Jake Hoback's Kwaiback. A masterpiece. But would I want to be fumbling around finding that little flipper tab in a tense situation where I had to protect myself?). All of this translates into this, my opinion is the Spyderco Military and Paramilitary 2 are two of the best and most practical EDC knives available! Sure, I love titanium handles as much as the next guy. Drop your expensive Hinderer or Medford knife once on the cement, dinging up the titanium and one is heartbroken. Drop a Spyderco Military G10 handle on the ground and you can barely tell it is banged up. That is practical. Need the knife for quick protection in a highly stressful situation, grab the Spyderco, you know where that large opening hole is, opens fast and efficient. At this time, the Military and Paramilitary 2 are my favorites all time knives.
I have Hinderers and others that come tip down new but are adjustable to tip Up that I've never changed over. I guess it doesn't matter to me.
Considering that the microtech so calm Elite is nonexistent on the primary retail market I have had to seek out a replacement. I have replaced this need with the heretic Raith. I was considering the spider go military but I didn’t find that had the quality of steel or The price I was willing to pay for a G 10 version. Like you said it’s just a little overpriced for what is offered. If it was around $150 I would’ve picked up two of them.. Until microtech starts producing the so calm elite I will have to settle my fascination worth knives by using the heretic Raith and I have also picked up a Spartan Blades palace both of these knives seem like they are worth the money I have paid for them.. I may try to find a Spyderco military on the secondary market just to get it in hand before I make a total write off for it. I just feel it’s not worth $200 plus for what is offered.
the design philosophy was sal glesser being asked what he would let his son take with him as a soldier.
best things about the millie are that it is an unapologetical huge cutting tool and that it is not just huge, but also still comfortable to carry and just a damn COUCH for your hand.
Regarding the liner lock i say not change it, in it's core this is a tacktical knife ( look at how minimal you grip you're knife closing it, with a compresion lock, and they are useless wearing gloves), tip down carrying is preached by the tacktical crowd too.
With it being designed as a militairy knife i would like it with the tanto blade like that pm2 a while back.
Liner locks are easier too use with gloves but the compression lock is still far from “useless” with gloves. A tanto would be cool but why would that be based on the fact this was designed for tactical purposes?
The OG Military will always be a lil harder to close vs the para 2 and 3 because of the liner lock putting friction against the blade. I've taken mine apart, polished the washers, polished the liners, and tweaked the tension on the pivots, and it's damn smooth. But it still can't fall closed like a Para unless you're a very brave or stupid person and keep a finger in the blade path to put pressure on the liner lock. The compression lock by comparison always the blade to fall with no tension at all.
They should do a compression lock version or replace the liner lock to compression lock
I have the Spyderco Military CF/52100 steel.... Get a LynchNW Deep carry clip and carry it in your back pocket. you can pull it out by the spydie hope and flick it open... It's an amazing knife...
The Military model is more ergonomic in my hand than the PM2 by far-great edc.
I second that. My PM2s are kind of retired.
Can we get a Socom Elite vs Military video? Or a Police 4 vs Military (if you have the police)
Seems like a higher end Resilience to me, i love the resilience. Would love the resilience with a finger choil, S30,S35 or S45 blade and compression lock, does that exist already?
You can get it in S35VN but it is only FRN scales and liner lock. It’s their budget series so won’t get much updates I suspect.
@@simonking8198 yeah i know, waiting for the military 2 to get to the UK and then i can die happy, the thing looks like a beast.
If they make this with S45V with DLC coating (PM2) it would be one bad ass knife! But I would also take Magnacut and LCN 200.
Will you review the new Military 2. I hope you will. I look forward to your pov.
I'd love it in a tough steel like 3v or nitro v
OMG so huge haha Can't believe it's bigger by that much than the rat 1
+1 for a production K390 Military or Rex 45 🤘👍
You make a good point in wanting a midel in k390, but not liking a big knife because its big makes no sense bro. The whole point is giving someone who wants a big knife- a big knife. This model pre-dates the compression lock but an updated compression model would be fabulous... but as a working knife this is hard to beat as is... people wanting a small knife automatically ding the military and the resilience as insane and not necessary it seems. Go cut a rope etc etc. Love your channel and reviews and would like to see more big knives in the mix
If there were a compression lock Military with G10 scales Spyderco would have my money so fast
imgur.com/gallery/XeBlKQY
The history of the design is on the paperwork that comes with the knife. The idea was “what knife would you give your son if he were going into military service?”
Also people just used to carry 4 inch blades like it was normal.
Bento box has a s90v military
Ive always wanted one but the tip down bums me out and spyderco screws are the worst .
If they put a compression lock on the military, I would buy one.
I had no idea these are so expensive. That’s unbelievable. Great review as always.
See this video right after buying my first spyderco. Military with the digital camo g10 and the dlc coated cpm s30v. Yeah... Liner lock on a $200 blade is a buzz kill. But it is the beat liner lock I have seen on a knife. Really love the ergos and how lightweight it is.
I like my S110v in purple.
Love mine. 💘 Drops just fine.
"You dorks"....🤣🤣🤣🤣
No PM2 or PM3 for me Millie forever and always! Spyderco is making a Millie 2 with compression lock and tip-up carry option.
if it weren't for that tip down clip
That military version is the only Spiderco I would ever consider purchasing. Almost all the other folders are to small. Those minis are unusable for my normal daily cutting tasks. 15-25 times a day I'll reach for my Recon 1 or SOCP Benchmade edc. Also have a Buck 119 and otf Infidel for specialized work. Those stubby high priced spidercos are not worthy. Rather pull out my ColdSteel Espada XL to cover any cutting task with high degree of overkill
Do a balisong
Love ya MC but we get that you’ve handeled ALOT of knifes. You don’t have to say it every video. Still my favorite knife-tuber!
I have handled......
A LOT of knives 🤟⚔
@@metal_complex I love the trollness 😂🤘🏻
Those often have red loctite
awesome looking spyderco. really like the size of it. looks like it'll fit my big sausage fingers
Bigger the better!
PSA, this knife was not made for batoning 🤣
I own one, but not a black blade.
I am a Chinese who lives in New Zealand. I bought the old version and S30V steel in Auckland.
Don't frown on tip down
That's what "they" said. (Now a days).
What happens when you see a fixed blade? And if you knife review guys are gonna keep doing these measurements, you should probably learn how to read a tape measure.
You're just going to have to sit there and deal with it Dale.
You go do better Dale
I love big knives. Way overpriced.
it’s priced this way to intrigue to the military personnel rather than daily carriers
@@cameronbottoms1118 The extreme majority of knives used by military personnel are no-name Chinese knives or whatever is sold at the base PX. I never saw someone with a knife worth more than $100 while I was in. Not that there arent any knife guys in the military, but they are few and far between
@@mickemerson1339 I never was in the military but i got a good amount of buddies who are some carry cheap knives like MTECH and some carry a microtech socom. It all depends on whatcha need. I guess gotta trust your gear right. Thank you for your service also. Enjoy Thanksgiving; you deserved it.
