I don't know if you received my other correspondence but I really enjoyed last nights giveaway show. I did a lot of explaining about why and how I would really like to purchase one of your own knives. I am on the list at White Mtn. for the Kizer Begleiter XL but it will be a minimum of 90 days + 2 weeks they tell me. Would you consider selling me you own personal knife I saw last night. I would be honored. Thanks I am an Instructor with the State of New Hampshire Fish and Game Dept.

Yes, absolutely worth it… I received the Spyderco Stovepipe today and it’s an unique and stunning folder true to the original “Bill the Butcher” design from artist Dave Rydbom. The design, craftsmanship, materials and machining that went into this folder is just amazing and the forms and contours in their shapes are very harmonious and well balanced.
In contrast to other Spyderco knifes, the Stovepipe is all about the form and perhaps not so much fit and function although I have no issues the way it sits and feels in my hand. The size of the Stovepipe is perfect in my personal opinion and it carries very well in my jeans pocket, not deep so it easily pulls out when needed.
The Stovepipe is extremely sharp and cuts through every material (paper, cardboard, wood, rope, rubber, plastic) and food I had laying around like butter. I noticed and experienced 2 specific positions to hold and use the Stovepipe for either cutting, chopping and/or carving. The heavy blade and straight cutting edge only amplified and assisted complementary in these activities.
The rhino nose, I read in one of Dave’s old posts was actually intended to break a car window (not a flat screwdriver as some may suspect) which I believe it definitely can but I won’t test ;-).
I also believe the Stovepipe will perform and even look better the more I practice with it, utilize and apply it as a no nonsense but very attractive and functional EDC folder. Time will tell.
It was love at first sight when I saw the Stovepipe folder and thus far I’m not disappointed in any way.

I ordered the Stovepipe and it will be my first Spyderco folder. It was love at first sight…
It’s an impressive folder and you can tell there’s a lot of complex machining time that went into it. It’s a lot of money but definitely a lot of knife too.
The Stovepipe is true to its original design which was inspired by custom knifemaker David Rydbom’s “Bill the Butcher” folder which I always admired.
The Stovepipe is an unique no-nonsense folder with an artistic and distinct flare. I’m extremely excited for this one to arrive.

      @f4t4lity0r4 Před 2 lety +8

MC actually has a knife steels ranked video. It’s pretty good but there are a lot of steels and it is confusing so dont feel bad. I have explained steels to essentially every person that gets into knives. It’s all basically a three way trade off of edge retention, toughness (resistance to chipping) and rust resistance. Steels that you really cant go wrong with are S30V, S35VN, S45VN. Those are some really common steels that are really good all rounders. There are more but I think you’ll run into those pretty often. Bohler M390 and CPM 20CV are basically top of the pack right now. D2, AUS10A and 14C28N are pretty good budget steels that maybe dont have the best edge retention or stainless qualities but they get the job done. Hope that helps a little and I hope others pitch in too.

Don't mind the bulk, the small size/short blade actually made me consider it more than I would have otherwise. Don't love it enough to drop that kind of coin on it tho. The grey on grey on grey Spyderco keeps using on their high-end releases is disappointing. We know they can (and do!) embrace color to the degree few manufacturers are willing to do. Feels like they shy away from that boldness on the high-end stuff. You're already making a niche knife, embrace it.

It's a fairly small knife, but I'm sure the actual height of of the blade, along with the bulk of the handle, make it feel bigger than it actually is. For the price, I honestly would've liked to see a compression lock. The blade shape is definitely a bit winky for me. In the end, it boils down to personal preference. I think they tend to do it by choice though. Rarely is the only tool available to do that a pocket knife, and it probably isn't the best thing to use for extended hard use.
With that said, I'm not saying anyone shouldn't do that, idc what anyone chooses to do with their knives. I'm just saying I tend to like to use what makes the most sense in a given situation. Why should I make things harder on myself for no reason?

It’s cool looking but is it in the same league as the Bowie, drunken, or Nirvana which all had similarish dealer prices? Not in my opinion. In my mind they priced it out of a reasonable range for its size and materials. I think some extra details like an inlay or not being all grey would have helped this knife out. Unfortunately the action really isn’t that special when I look at my TRM atom that has a thin blade and drops like its on bearings when I slide the lock bar over for $100 less even with fat carbon scales. Like I’ve said before, the machine time in this knife may make it “worth it” but its a hard sell for a lot of people from what I’ve seen. Both of which are amazing knives and that's just two I got a bunch of them for under $100 in the same materials. The quality and fit and finish are better than most USA knives I've bought in the past. I do love the look seeing how I love titanium and the finish is great even if simple. Just makes it easier to customize and refinish down the road when it's broken in and nicely worn.
But these USA companies want way too much for titanium and s35vn especially since the s35vn is American steel and Titanium itself isn't expensive though it does cost a bit to process it.

I like the disign and everything else but come on 600$ msrp even for 400$ is too much here is nothing in this knife that make me whant to spend that much on it. It's very similar in term of built to the spydiechef for 200$ more 😂 why?
Here so many other interesting and special knife out there in this price range fair price for me would be between 250 to 300$ not more.
Anyway as always great video MC 🤝

Hey MC, in regards to the price. Did you see birdshots video from shot show? The rep from Spyderco that they were talking to literally tried to justify the price of the production knife because of the cost of the designers customs on the secondary market….. go check it out if you haven’t. Sorry I can’t remember the time when it happened.

I get the novelty factor and it looks beautifully constructed. I can’t get past the finger cutouts… they don’t make aesthetic sense to me and it’s like someone gave up halfway through the design process. Overall my takeaway from the review is that form beat the snot out of function. As much as I like beautiful things, it has to function well too, so I’m out on this one. Not my bag.
