Hop Along's Frances Quinlan Performs "Buddy In The Parade": Noisey Acoustics

- A mural company’s warehouse seemed like the obvious place for Hop Along’s Frances Quinlan to play a song off of the band’s album ‘Painted Shut.’ In addition to doing some house-painting on the side, Quinlan also painted the album’s cover. So we sneaked her into the back room of Colossal Media in Brooklyn where she belted out a stripped-down solo version of “Buddy in the Parade.” Here she is jamming among the brushes and cans.

so so so past good. her voice can go everywhere. so good
I can't for the life of me understand why people are insulting her voice. The first time I heard her voice I got shivers. She has such a broad vocal range and an ability to convey emotion like no other.
I love in the song “get disowned” where when she’s singing “meteor make me yawn” she does a yelling type yodel, it was kinda like a crack, but i really liked that part of the song and songs where she is yelling.
She can sing so well, I don't understand how anyone can say she can't sing? Did they listen past the first 4 lines.
I love her originality. The style of her voice is unparalleled! So unique and beautiful. I adore the grunge.

Didn't know people subscribed to Noisey wouldn't have heard of France, one of the best voices in alt rock right now, this acoustic version doesn't fit in that well though

this video is not fair to frances or hop along. seriously. the guitar is out of tune!!!!! but she and this band are great, i hope people go to other videos to notice that. maybe listen to their records. but this video itself is not making any justice. SERIOUSLY.

I suppose she's a bit expressive. Seems to use vocal fry to cover for not being able to hold a note, and the strumming was basic and poor and not well fingered.Maybe I should have heard something else by her first - although subtitles might have helped.
that's not vocal fry. most of those grunge vocal fry sounding stuff is actually not forced or intentional. I can tell the difference, she isn't trying to do that, it just happens. Vocal fry is when you shred your voice to get sound like that, kind of like what most of those grunge dudes did. You can tell they were forcing it though by sending more air through than they could actually use.
At the start, we get to see & hear the real person speak & honestly express herself.
Just take a moment to repeat this short excerpt. Then she starts singing, & a completely different voice comes out with a selected persona contrary to her own.
This is a common reaction of denial. She spends most of the performance with her eyes closed & even though the acoustic guitar is an instrumental of precision & dynamics, she'd rather just thrash the shit out of it. And as for the vocals, she is actually a much better singer than what we're privy to. However, she doesn't want the Burdon of maintaining fervent & disciplined vocal lines, so just deliberately cheapens the performance with shabby screeches, retracted scoops & belted hoarse; relying once again on the image & ego of this other person she's fabricated. In a word... Enantiodromia.
I wouldn't worry too much about it though. Everyone's doing it. Covers, ghost writers, x-factor, game-faces, etc. We live in times best suited to people who are influenced; not people who influence others.

there are multiple streams, you stupendous dunce.. ..... why on Earth would you belittle someone for enjoying a band, a songwriter or a type of music as though that entirely defines their taste. People actually listen to a variety of music. No one will ever have to pick one, and surround themselves with it. If they did it would simply be because they're close-minded or actually daft and can't grasp that the brain grows as stimulation changes.
