Let's talk about Frances Quinlan's voice for a moment. In "Horseshoe Crab," she whispers with a rasp that feels small, yet embodies the fears we try not to name; then, she throws her head back to ask, "Who is gonna talk trash long after I'm gone?" That gut-punching howl shatters like a plate on a concrete floor.
Quinlan's singular voice is the focus, but not what ultimately completes Hop Along, a guitar-based rock band that messes with the soft-loud dynamic in busy and urgent arrangements that cull from their experiences in punk, hard rock and Americana groups. At the NPR Music offices, Hop Along plays songs from its new album Painted Shut, with guitarist Joe Reinhart swapping an electric for an acoustic, giving the band a country-tinged Nashville feel - especially in the punchy, poppy closer, "Sister Cities."

Hop Along is just one of the best bands ever, the more you listen to it, the more subtle nuances you hear, especially in the studio albums. Their use of distortion and noise is just genius, and incredibly rich and complex.
you hit it right on the nail, i dont think i could agree more
well dressed is a fucking master piece
Char3v amen
I think "Well-Dressed" may be one of my favourite songs ever.
That and 'No Good Al Joad' from 'Get Disowned' are masterpieces IMO
Her voice reaches deep into your soul and embraces it with a crushed velvet hug.
well dressed Is just amazing it gives me chills
how she do dat
Roxy Baby
whole ass mood
how she do dat dere?
angel babies.
i guess those are called cherubs? but she murdered them and ate their skin is what i'm trying to say.
ye
so tru
I would marry that voice.
+Juan Pablo Torres I'd be your "best man"
I wouldn't want to argue with her
her voice is the only thing that matters in this world
Hop Along is legit one of my favorite bands. I have listened to "Get Disowned" a thousand times. I just found this today and I can't believe I haven't watched it before. love u, frances
What a legendary voice.
That tiny drum set is throwing off my entire perception of life
“Horseshoe Crabs” is a total and utter masterpiece- never fails to make me feel things, it’s so emotional and beautiful in every sense of the way. It’s one of those songs that generates and makes me picture the whole story (and stories that link to its general narrative) of it with so much emotion and power
Probably my top favorite song by them right next to “Diamond Mine” and “Look of Love”
god Look of Love is so insanely good
@@user-wt2dz5bx5m 100%
It’s an amazing song
I didnt come into contact with the song until now and it just brought me to tears. A true masterpiece
it makes me sad how underrated Diamond Mine is. The band in general, how aren't they having the recognition
Their music is like an exorcism, she is using every ounce of energy in her body to sing the way she does, and it's beautiful.
When her voice breaks my heart drops and I get teary eyed like the little boy I still am inside of this adult shell of mine.
well stated
Wow, such a fuckin poet. Your run-on, shit filled sentence has filled me with hatred.
I hope you can do something productive with that.
Yeah, i kicked a dog lol
LemonKing Oddities its kinda hard when you aint got no friends, its ok man. Relax
I assume her voice isn't for everyone, but damn I love it.
@@jon8004 you’d be surprised just how sustainable it can be assuming her technique is good, which I would guess it most likely is
@justussmith3080 almost sounds like some kinda of natural damage in her voice. Less like a filter or forced distortion like most people use, seems like if she sings at a certain volume it just... cracks
I first heard them on Welcome To Night Vale, and really enjoy them! A very comforting quality to the sound of their music.
So many beautiful bands don’t get the recognition they deserve
I almost didn't recognize Mr. Joe Reinhart there without the scraggly long hair. Really cool to see you go from Algernon to playing on NPR music.
He passed me the nylon string asked me to play him something man I heard this song on NPR and now I can't stop listening to it I guess I'm a fan...
Thanks so much, NPR.. I discovered Hop Along from this Tiny Desk concert and now they've gone an become one of my favorite bands ever. It's been some months, just enough time to fall in love and get my hands on everything I could from them ^_^ Sincerely, thank you :D
Same here!
back here again
ooh here again
well-dressed is honestly one of my favorite songs of the past decade. Such a great band, and she's getting better and better at sounding as good live as she does on the album. There's a little muted guitar riff part that was left out at the end of well dressed though, and that bothered my because I really liked that part. Acoustic guitar could have been mic'd a little better as well.
Saw her live a few nights ago and their energy and performance rivaled the main event! I'd never even heard them before, but her voice was just awesome. She made a believer out of me.
Man I've been listening to them for years now and I haven't gotten a chance to see them live yet, but I gotta say it's on my bucket list at this point. They came to Montreal, but it was two days after I was admitted to fucking rehab :( It was residential and I'd been on a waiting list for a while, and not going on that date would have meant postponing my recovery for possibly months, which would have been more months of mainlining heroin and pouring benzos down my gullet... And yet I was actually really close to just saying fuck it and going to the Hop Along show instead. I ended up doing the rehab, and I'm clean and sober now, but it still nags at me that they came to my city and I had to miss the show. Now they have no tour dates up, and they might never come back here :(
well-dressed is possibly one of the most perfect songs i've ever heard, so glad other people appreciate
@@SquareNoggin I know your comment is two years old, but it touched me. I hope you're doing well.
@@SquareNoggin You made the right choice. ❤
Frances managed to combine Janis Joplin and Kim Deals singing voices into her own. Love this band!
Rod Stewart’s in there
Terry Reid
And Tommy pickles
@@storm_blessed Oh dude, yeah. Totally some Tommy Pickles in there aka Pheobes musician friend on Friends that stole Smelly Cat to sell it to a cat food jingle company. Same broad
she reminds me a tiny bit of cat power or feist in some or their songs
Was just made aware of this band from the Welcome to Nightvale podcast where they were the weather in an episode. God damn I love her voice
MrFragglerock75 exactly where I first heard them, always a good source of new music imo
Her voice reminds me someone playing a recorder and I fucking love it
I would commit acts of felony to have her sing the dictionary to me.
"Aardvark! Whyyyyyhy didn't you call me back? Whyyyyyhy didn't things aardvark better than thiiiiihis?" 😂
So happy to see this! Hop Along is great.
Sorry, I meant to say "fantastic".
+AlexSuperTramp I thought you meant to make a reference to their song "Happy to See You", but, hey, yeah, they're amazing too ^_^
Moon Along My Head Clever! "Happy to See You" is my favorite song by her. The last lines are so nice.
Is this the most underated TDC of all time? I think so.
her voice!! it tickles and it warms and it soothes!! like!! how!! bless!!
Such a great voice
This band is amazing! Thanks NPR for introducing them! I love tiny desk even more today than yesterday!
Her voice sounds like a raspy Tommy Pickles and I love it
This made me crack up in 2018 thanks
Hear hear!
I can't unhear that lol
I hate you for making me hear ths
How did u not hear it lol
It's like The Pickles' All grown Up grunge band....
she es simply and undoubtly talented, incredible and unique! I totally love her voice her intensity
One of my favorite artists that recorded with weathervane music!
their voice is literally incredible, they could literally at me and id thank them
I love how distinctive her voice is. It's unconventionally attractive which makes the delivery of these well-written lyrics incredibly entertaining.
Yeah man. It really gets me
Yes! I love Hop Along!
Beauty is in the imperfections.
her voice Is tearing apart my Heart in multiple Pieces and melting Them all together After that
A Girl Sings. Who is this girl from my old hometown of Philly? One of the best bands I've heard in a long time. She has guts and soul and the rest have playfulness which should never be dismissed.
Crazy she produces these sounds. One of a kind! Grinding chord after pure melodic inflection. It’s like she’s tapped into something we all have deep inside, rather let’s it fly off the cuff; like she’s not trying 😏
One of the best voices ever
I'm in love.
Absolutely beautiful
Her voice cracks some in this, I took a listen to the studio versions and fell in love.
Thanks. I just finished listening to the studio versions on the Saddle Creek channel. Loved them all, and the gritty texture in her vocals!
The doo dee doo bit got me
WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING TO MY EARS!?
Oh is this what good music sounds like?
this video should have way more views. what a VOICE
that drop on well dressed is so elliott smiiiiithhh i luuuuuvvv itttt
She is so good!
So underrated
I clicked the like button at the beginning but at the end of each song I had to make sure there wasnt a option to double like this blessed music
just discovered them, they are so talented
I'm catching a '90s Cat Power vibe, which is a vibe I really like
+monkey dangus Yeah a little bit eh? I find the instrumentals are a little more unique than the instrumentals ever were on Cat Powers songs. Don't get me wrong though - Cat Powers is the shit.
God they deserve much more praise and attention.
Bands like this give me hope for my own music. Saddle Creek is my favourite record label. :'D Keep up the good work guys.
I love how genuine her projections are.
I've never heard of these guys before, but I like. I love her voice.
I heard about this band from the ACL Radio interview with Adam Duritz, who spoke highly of Frances Quinlan's voice--a great compliment! Very nice set. 🙂👍🏼🤙🏽
OMG, me too. Adam introduced me to this band. Had never heard them before that.
greatest band in the fucking world omg, seriously anazing as hell, i just want them to go back on tour already !!!!
She has such a cool sound. Truly original. Well done.
Thank you for posting the video!
In LOVE with Hop Along! 😊❤️✌🏻
Everything's in tune here guys, I dont get yall at all
I'm in love with this band
Great to see that the faceless man from game of thrones has got a drumming gig on the side
***** A man drums.
epv1 All men must...
***** That is so fucking funny and on the mark. He looks just like 'im.
***** With Arya singing lead vocals! (they have the same shape, but not the same face)
Will Forte on lead too? No? Just me? Okay.
Jesus I love this band and Sister Cities is so beautiful
They're dead good.
...but I need to know what the hell that guitarist said to the sound engineer before the set. Tiny Desk stuff normally sounds astonishingly good for the setup, so I can only assume serious insults were made against the other party's mother.
yeah, joe is way muted especially in sister cities
Such a unique voice.
Opens with my favorite song of theirs
Strangely this band has always reminded me of Sunny Day Real Estate.
Totally...
Not that strange, but it makes me sad and really nostalgic. Like really bad.
i totally feel you on this!
THAT KIND OF MAKES SENSE
it really reminds me of a specific summer in the early 90s
I had the chance to watch their show in Berlin last sunday. Awesome
Now I know how would be Franck Black's voice if he was a woman. Beautifull.
saw these guys live (supporting the Decemberists) and I was so shocked by how amazing they were so fantastic
Hop Along is so great, loved both their albums! If people don't appreciate her singing they can go check out pop groups and stuff, but don't come here and hate just to hate.
+holyburritoimmexican It's the narrative vocal style, man it's so good. It's not just the same melody over and over; the vocals tell a story (and I don't mean the lyrics) and it's great.
+Harry Flashman I get chu.
Favorite song of all time time is horseshoe crabs unreal don't ask why just listen
What a voice!
Man, I love this band. Been listening to the.for years, and it's still amazes me that this is the same Joe that used to play in Algernon Cadwallader
Brings back memories of youth... When Bettie Serveert meets the Breeders.... Awesome!
This seriously ripped, guys. Really loving Painted Shut.
Where have I been the passed 3 years?? Why did I just find this now? Better subscribe so I don't miss out on another gem.
Oh my lord. That voice!
This is so strangely infectious.
Amazing.
Sister cities kills me every time
"Horseshoe crabs" - a one song refutation of solipsism
I loved all the songs...took three listens so far. Of the three, Horseshoe Crabs was my favorite. Overall, I totally love the grit in her vocals. Not sure what was with the cracking in the last two songs (sounded strained in some areas...could be from singing up top-neck & chest); but it happens to even the best artists. Regardless, I loved the lyrics and the music. I could feel the passion and sincerity behind the songs. Going back to Saddle Creek for a second listen there to see which is my favorite of the 10 posted there.
I'm in love
Easy one of my favorite bands! Their new album is just as good!
I've been listening to them pretty much consistently and exclusively for three weeks now. Honestly the only band I listen to like this was when I first discovered Manchester Orchestra. But I still never listened to a band like this. Their music is just so close to perfect it feels amazing to listen to. If I had one critique is she her lyrics are a little weak but my favorite band is bright eyes so he sets the bar high. Best band in the world be hop along w/ Conor Oberst writing the lyrics.
Her lyrics have definitely improved over the years I think
Got see my buddies band open for them and then a week later they opened for modest mouse! in love with this band for sure!
i never thought i'd see the guitarist of algernon on npr lmaoo
@@shonis_shelf it is the guitarist from Algernon. I believe he produces the albums too
I was just looking into genius for algernon lyrics and that man's produced for so many people over the years including Foxing, Smidley, Joyce Manor, Snowing, and there's a few more. Such a talented individual.
A thousand of this views are mine!! Love you francq
Horseshoe Crabs. More than one.
i love her
EXCELLENT set! 9.5/10 just wish the Acoustic could be heard better!
KaisDragonBlade agreed.
love that a train whistled in my city right when she did the haha goes the train
they did joe dirty on this what the heck
Their voice is the only thing that matters.
Damn good!
I saw these guys open up for modest mouse in Columbus. pretty good. definitely potentially with this group.
