Adrianne Lenker: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

- The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Bob Boilen | November 18, 2020
For her Tiny Desk (home) concert, Adrianne Lenker's home is a camper trailer parked somewhere in Joshua Tree National Park. It's the appropriate setting for the five songs she performs from her new album, tunes birthed in a wooden cabin in Massachusetts.
The songs, the words, the voice of Adrianne Lenker has been at the top of my year-end musical loves for the past five years, more so than any other artist. It began with her work as the singer and songwriter on Big Thief's electric debut album, Masterpiece, in 2016 and runs through this year's two sister solo albums, one titled songs and the other instrumentals. Those albums contain nothing more than an acoustic guitar, voice, and the bug, birds, and creatures captured while recording.
Her yearning voice, simultaneously frail and strong, draws me to those songs - songs about people, everyday life, everyday death, and ordinary places. All the while, she picks the tunes out of her guitar or paints the rhythms with a brush. These are songs worth spending time with, simple on first listen, but so much more profound once you live with them.

get in the car boys we’re heading to the big sad
We gotta rent a bus
Am I the only one who feels many of these are actually uplifting?
@@Maximuss1999 i feel like they are uplifting cause we can relate, it’s kinda like a sad appreciation of our beings, like a good sad smh ?
Definitely a good sad
love the in rainbows pfp
Everyone's talking about such a good songwriter she is (one in a lifetime, no doubt), but can we talk about how she plays guitar???? Mindblowing.
You're right. There's a good reason she can do a whole instrumental album, her playing is so so excellent.
That's how good the songs are. The virtuosic fingerstyle guitar under it kind of melts into the awesomeness and the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts or whatever they say.
@BARON De FERLA I'm pretty sure she's way a better guitar player than you think she is
@@Antarr98 "Anything" is definitely harder to play than I thought it'd be... Tune to Open D#, that's a new one for me, and then those tricky chords where you barre just the two low strings and have to stretch your pinky over on the 4th string. Wasn't the simple play-along I was hoping for after picking up the guitar for the first time in a while, but I'll keep cracking at it. Beautiful music.
The sublty of her thumb is staggering.
Adrianne Lenker is carrying folk into the 21st century with beauty and grace
much agreed
truly
adrienne lenker said in an interview she wants us to listen and feel seen and cared about. i can’t stress how much i feel like she’s achieved this beautifully and fully
It feels like she is speaking directly to you through her music. It's a surreal feeling
“I don’t want to be the owner of your fantasy
I just want to be a part of your family”
That line is so powerFULL!
One of the most precious things I've ever heard.
“I want to sleep in your car, while you’re drivin. Lay on your lap while I’m crying” the trust in those words and the vulnerable felt throughout the song is what’s so magical 🧙♀️
Kills me.
I thought it was "ardor of your fantasy" which I guess makes less sense
kinda pavlovian how adrienne's voice just makes me cry on cue now
As soon as I hear the opening notes to Anything, the tears start coming
"oh emptiness,
tell me about your nature,
maybe i've been getting you wrong.
i cover you with
questions
i cover you with
explanations
i cover you with music.
what's on your mind?"
phenomenal poetry
all my homies love adrianne lenker
Love this comment
best homies
If the homies don’t like Adrienne, we not homies any more.
Well the commercial definitely killed the vibe of me crying to this
Same gurl.
same
big time yeah
Buy the record, listen to it over and over ...
We need to burn capitalism to the ground.
when she busted out the paint brush i was like here we goooo
paint brush guitar pick/strumming tool cool idea!
freakin genius
accenting like brushes on a snare
@@shnootch it does have a similar sound to it.
I wasn't watching and I was listening to it, and I was like "why does that sound so weird but cool?" It adds just the slightest amount of percussion and it adds a subtlety that wouldn't be there if she'd picked or strummed it the "regular" way.
Adrianne Lenker sings each song like it's the last time she will ever sing it in the most beautiful and heartbreaking way. Thank you NPR Music and Bob Boilen for Tiny Desk Concerts, the world wouldn't be the same without it.
Linki, you are so right. Lenker's voice is heartbreaking. This is my first time listening to her and I'm in tears.
as a guitarist let me tell ya that she is one of the best players iv heard in a long time. reminds me of Elliot Smith playing.
The fusion of real raw soul and absolute technical mastery she has going on is just like... what
@Edita Ševčíková I dont understand the point in wishing for that. I wish I didnt age and got to live in eternal youth. I wish for a million dollars. Whats the point of wishing? Enjoy what yer got!
@Edita Ševčíková yeah fair enough. If you like Sonic Youth and weird tuning then check out Swervedriver - Mezcal head ... great record/lots of weird tuning. u heard it?
This. She and Elliot Smith are perhaps my two favorite songwriters. They each have the gift of creating intricate, complex, musically original instrumentation and lyrics while not being showy or flashy. It's all in service to the song as a balanced composition. They are the complete package. It's what I aspire to be as a songwriter.
@@ParhelionMedia Check out Nick Drake if you haven't already.
Adrianne is a gift from another dimension she is ethereal yet grounded, and the most raw and real human. She's a true artist. This was beautiful and heartbreaking.
I love that. You nailed it. She is a gift from another dimension. We are blessed to have the ability to realise it, most won't.
What in the Wattpad?
I couldn’t have summed er up better myself
Yesyesyes, she is seriously the most beautiful human to be created from the dust of the cosmos
These albums came out as soon as I got home from the hospital from pancreatic cancer surgery, which saved my life. The seasons were changing, and I would listen to songs + instrumentals; and ONLY those albums, everyday as I tried to walk. They will always symbolize healing, hope, and the wonder of life for me. They are Adrianne's soul in song formation.
what a beautiful comment
That’s incredible 😢
Be blessed.
I hope you're better now and Blessed 🙏🏻
That’s amazing. There is something very healing about her music. It’s a gift. I’m so glad to hear you’re better.
Playing two reverse and singing at the same time is so insane. The syncopation is just so slightly different between the hand and voice. She's amazing
A little Nick Drake, a little Joni Mitchell, a little anxiety - truly wonderful
A lot Sibylle Bair...
Her voice reminds me a bit of Karen dalton
if I was wandering around Joshua Tree and heard this coming from a trailer I'd fall to my knees
Can you even imagine? :)
What is it about Joshua tree know what you mean a place I have to keep going back too
So hipster! C’mon her sound is nothing new
I've lately been in the habit of putting this vinyl on first thing on a Sunday morning. The moment the first notes of Two Reverse rings out, it fills my little flat in Berlin with an aura of otherness, other worlds, perfect heartbreak, the white curtains blowing in and out at the balcony door, sitting up in bed bleary-eyed, looking absently at the plants, thinking about Adrianne and people lost and maybe some people not yet found, all of us together here in these comments for a moment.
thank you for this comment. your words breathe the exact atmosphere that you are describing like there is a rhytmn of some wind blowing through them.
this just made me go buy songs on vinyl and ive never made a better decision
she is so beautiful. this literally sounds exactly like the recording. i love her so much
she was flawless.
but in a good way x
is
@madarichards i hope ya wrong about that Jonsi album as i`ve yet to play it all
@madarichards They just put out two amazing albums ☺️. I hear what you’re saying but her recent releases were pretty amazing. I’m also really excited about Buck Meek’s upcoming album - Second Sight is an AMAZING song!
@madarichards You act like they've been gone for years, beside abysskiss and songs are beautiful albums
The percussion the paint brush adds, almost like a soft shaker, is brilliant
it's a cool technique. I was struck by how it gurantees you can get a full quick strum without ever having the sharpness of the fingernail affecting the sound, truly the right tool for the job
paint brush guitar pick/strumming tool cool idea!
Yep never seen that before
I was just listening to this song wonder how she achieved this.
" i just want to be a part of your family " always makes me cry
“Is it a crime to say I still need you?”
Is she not the greatest and most painfully-vulnerable lyricist of our time?
No. Lyrics are ok. Sounds like Martha wainwright. She’s really good tho
Idk maybe Phil elverum?
That line brings me to my knees
Of any time.
@@xcop13 Anybody that says "ok" isn't listening.
I honestly can't believe this is live. It really shows that what she puts out is completely unfiltered and it's amazing
Absolutely heavenly. Adrianne has consistently been one of the best songwriters of our times
100% agree
Amen
Very underrated
Elliott Smith too
anything is everything.
anything is the best love song ever written, her lyrics are insane, always been.
I cried when I first heard Anything
She is a blessing, and happy to see her reach so many people with this project.
Same💙
@@kujstrawmulch5880 Same. It touches deeply.
me too, its one of my favorite songs ever
@@chai6898 same!!
It's no.1 in my all time Spotify listened song🙂
Agreed. It's so beautifully done. I was scared, indigo, but I wanted to
Best songwriter of the last few years. Her solo work + Big Thief are head and shoulders above anything else at the moment. Unreal.
I love how vulnerable is, She's my absolute favourite lyricist.
Yup, never payed attention to lyrics before i discovered her. Just amazing!
I love her too. If you want to find another amazing lyricist, my favorite of all time, check out Conor Oberst and Bright Eyes... if you want vulnerable and real, you won't be disappointed! Much love friend. ♥
Words fail me. That performance of 'Anything' is unfathomably beautiful.
I feel lucky to be on the same planet with her at the same time, but honestly, she's on another plane of existence. She's a once-in-a-lifetime talent.
0:00 - *zombie girl* (2:53)
3:06 - *two reverse*

10:13 - *anything*
13:25 - *ingydar*
thank you
Thx
Thank you for making me feel human again.
Thanks Pentameron! Really, NPR/TDC should just always do this for us...

The alliteration & rhyme of anything is so satisfying to sing along with
"dog's white teeth slice right through my fist" trips me up every time though 😭
From someone who has played guitar for 10 years, this is a truly masterful fingerpicking display- the skill involved (in particular in two reverse) is astounding - Can't begin to imagine how somebody could pick up a guitar and produce that. On top of this is some of the most interesting, soulful and beautiful songwriting I have ever heard. Adrianne Lenker take a bow- My only disappointment is that my favourite song from "songs" (not a lot, just forever) was not included in the setlist, but i'll let that one slide :D
Not a lot, just forever is amazing and I am also disappointed it wasn't included lol
Two reverse didn't stop blowing my mind the whole time
Give us the Ingydar tab hey! 😊
she studied guitar at berklee haha
@@CordeliaGartside with highest grades imho! 😊
"six years in, no baby" - makes me cry every time
@@adelaidee6053 i'm not sure why 'six years in', but the line just seems so sad
I think the song Not Alot, Just Forever expands on this idea.
Adrienne you'll probably not see this but it goes into the world and shimmers; I love you for your gentle bravery and your fighting spirit. You must guess this but it's worth saying it anyway, the way you share your light with the world constantly rescues many of us. I cry the best crys when I sing these songs with you. Love always from wherever i'll be in the world 'till I go
Beautiful. I hope she does see it. Thank you for sharing with her and with us.
@@calebzimmerman3102
matthew, 11 months later, i'm here to tell you that your message to her made my heart wrinkle up a little in sadness and recognition. i feel you. she shimmers.
Just sublime. Utterly uncompromising. Best artist of the last 20 years. A run of 4 great big thief albums, whilst quietly running an equally prolific solo career. Then the pandemic, which possibly stopped the entire world finding out what a talent she is. And still the writing continues. I have tickets for February - please Covid, leave those shows alone!
Everything she creates is an absolute treasure. Her voice and music has changed my life.
Sasha, she is a treasure!
literally the most underrated artist of our generation like her voice and lyricism are honestly unlike any other out there. and her skill with the guitar ???? bro so so so insane . im transcending
I wonder if she knows she's the best songwriter
I think she knows there is no "best" songwriter because that makes no sense
@@tdb517 I'm sure you can make an argument for someone being the best songwriter if they've written multiple brilliant songs for example idk but it's definitely possible .
@@godisrealgoddamnit who decides which songs are good? can't be objective with art
@@rocklobster590 General reception of the artwork something like that. There is a still a way to measure how good art is however, you can still hate an art piece even if it's officially ranked as the best
No she’s not
When she looked at the camera after "zombie girl" with a slight smile followed by and an over the shoulder "hm".. the glance after "anything" too. I adore this woman 💜
Indygar is an astonishing song. It pulls me in and swirls around me and I lose myself. Just beautiful
It’s my favorite of hers
Love how she can go from masterful fingerpicking in two reverse, to paintbrushing in the next song. All brilliant
Adrianne Lenker? I hardly stop listening to her
Helena Deland will help fill in the gaps; her new album is amazing, too.
@@welcometothegrey Thanks for the reco!
flawless comment.. I was sobbing reading the other ones and now I'm cry laughing thank u
This made me giggle
She’s a goddess. Talented beyond her years.
But can we talk about the acoustics of the trailer? I’ve never heard anything so pure. Neumann + Martin + Angel
It's never not intimate when I watch her. Doesn't matter where, when, or how. Thank you.
For those who dislike this undoubtedly beautiful performance, your hearts are made of stone. You don't even deserve the CZcams algorithm that brought you here. Go back to your cave. We don't need that kind of negativity. 😤
I’ve used up all my superlatives trying to describe her music to people. They are skeptical when I make honest comparisons to Joni and Dylan but the consistent excellence of her work has few comparisons among contemporary artists.
I agree completely ❤
that’s a massive statement, i’m gonna check her out then
@@wangoito6789please do she is an actual folk legend
I see a lot of Elliot smiths style too!
the deep breath she takes at the beginning of dragon eyes is a good representation of how this tiny desk makes me feel
also her smile at 9:09 ugh😍 you can see how much the music completely takes over her body and makes her blossom
My god. Adrianne is one of the purest artists creating music today. Her ability to completely command the sound-space with just an acoustic guitar and voice is... mercurial. Also, this is one of the best at-home recording and filming setups we've had yet.
An angel singing within the confines of a brutal, isolated and confusing year. Beauty unleashed. Thank you.
The fact that she uses a paint brush for dragon eyes choked me up for some reason
I cried. So beautiful. Idk what it is about it
that song just gets to me man.
Whoa, how I love "Anything"..... Her chords are something else
cant stop crying, these songs touch me like no other artist does
Most underrated artist of the last decade by some way. And I listen to ALOT of music and artists.
ahhh. at the line "what's on your mind" burst into tears, absolutely gorgeous
Purest person walking earth rn. Everyone else just go away. She wins.
Absolutely
i dont even know how i came here, but this is the most beautiful thing i have hear in a long time
this is the kind of melancholy i needed today
A glorious painful treat I saved for a reward at the end of the day. We're all so fortunate to be alive at the time when Adrianne's titanic talent is on our planet, and so much more still ahead of her.
absolutely criminal that youtube allows ads to be placed after each song
adblock saves lives

She has it all. Lead vocalist and guitarist for the band Big Thief. One of the favorites of one of my muses whom I took a week of songwriting workshops from in 2017.
When I grow up I wanna be just like Adrianne Lenker.
Same
Me too and I’m older than her 🙈😭
The way I cry during “zombie girl” without fail.
Her music fills me with calm. Even if it’s a sad or lonely calm, I feel the true essence of life in her songs.
Yoooooo what country wonderland did I fall into??? How am I just now hearing her. I’m in love. I wanna be there lol
I can't wait to see how high Adrianne goes and how brightly she shines
Two reverse on this live session is one of the best performance and song in youtube, at least for me
Everything Adrianne touches turns to gold.
She's not only a great song writer and performer, but she's extraordinary chops on the guitar. She's a fabulous player!
The kpop blasting unskippable phone ad I got in the middle of this was an affront to humanity
Feels like im drowning in my own head when i hear Ingydar🥀 beutiful , just beutiful ❤️
I happened to accidentally start listening to her music on Spotify early this morning. And then here's this video in my subscription feed when I take my lunch break. I feel blessed by this beautiful and haunting music.
Tech companies are exchanging personal user infos. Not that its that bad or anything...
this is beautiful. "two rivers" always brings me to tears. adrianne's guitar playing is gorgeous. her songs are a balm for a broken heart
‘Anything’ is yearning, it’s love, it’s missing them, it’s perfect brain to paper.
her music means so much more to me than i could ever put into words
Life is worth it.
Adrianne is a true original. I've seen thousands of gigs over too many years, but her solo show at Union Chapel in Jan 2019 was one I will never forget. Stunning... 😍
One of the all time great songwriters.
This is absolutely beautiful... otherworldly... as Joni Mitchell.....deeply poetic... thank you A.L .... your music is a gift.
Sounds just like the recorded versions on "songs" -- probably because this is essentially how she records haha
actually i think if you watch the music video for 'zombie girl' you'll notice it's exactly the same recording that they used in the album!

"Weren't we the stars in heaven?
Weren't we the salt in the sea?
Dragging the new born mountain.

i don't know how, but this album makes me nostalgic for a time before this album existed. simply masterful stuff
Two reverse is such an incredible song
the way she uses both sides of the paintbrush to strum guitar and tap percussion at the same time in 'dragon eyes' !!!!!!!
This album means so much to me it's insane. Adriannes music has been a crutch in my life for a few years now with my heavy anxiety and depression. I saw her in concert and she's so wildly talented it's sickenin. Love her
adrienne makes soul music. you don’t listen to her with your ears you listen with your soul. i really needed this. thank you.
"When the hot sand burns my feet

“Anything” is unbelievably beautiful.
Adrianne taught me how to use my voice in a way I never thought I could.
For me she is up there with Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan and a few flakes of Donovan. With a unique voice of her own. A true talent. I listen to her Tiny Desk at Home in loops, like an acned teenager - I'm 58
Have a year or two on ya and YEAH, check out Aldous Harding as well
everything eats and is eaten touched my spirit... beautiful voice...
She really does radiate such a light
She casually throws harmonics in ingydar like its nothing... I'm in absolute awe of this wonderful human being.
I love how this is shot. It looks like it's coming from a movie.
Perfect and underrated. This is songwritings finest. She really gives Dylan and Van Zant a run for their money. Finally a hope for modern poetry healing music. Love it ❤
it feels like she's singing to me only
"Ethereal" springs immediately to mind, this is lovely.
