What's your food essentials on the trail?
Great video Taylor. I have the BV450 and bring it pretty much everywhere I go. I'm planing for Panthertown Valley, NC this weekend and there's a big bear population there. What I usually bring is Packet Tuna, Peak Refuel Freeze dried meals, snickers, Tortillas, and Peanut butter in the vault right now. How do you eat healthy on the trail? I wish I had a good source of vegetables on trail.
@@evanlazar91 Thanks Evan! Honestly we just try to watch the calorie intake and also make sure we get enough electrolytes. I wish we could carry fruit and Vegetables but it just gets to beat around a bruised. haha We both love fruit!
The honest truth, I can get 7days of food for myself in the BV450. Just before your day of departure, empty the contents of you dehydrated meal into a ziplock sandwich baggie, roll it snugly and zip it closed. That meal for 1 will typically be 1 to 1.5” in dia. 5” long, 7 of these packed snugly will utilize approx. 30-40% of dia. of the canister. I also make several of my own meals, using instant rice as the base and foil packs of chicken or tuna adding seasoning and something like dehydrated mushroom, the chicken / tuna packs are ideal and less than 1/2” thick and 4” sq. The remainder of the canister I stuff with quick easy to eat breakfast, lunch and snack items. When full on a gram scale the BV450 typically weighs around 7.7 to 9lbs. Stuff it, get creative and you will be amazed how much you can pack in the canister.
Great review. Better demo than ive seen in other videos
Love your channel!
Thank you. Thank you for being here!
I know the worst pests are mice what can i do to prevent those little things from chewing up my pack?
That’s a million dollar question. A good hang is your best bet.
Are these the ones that are now NOT ALLOWED to be used in the Adirondacks?
Not sure. Have to check with the land management. Thanks for watching!
These are not allowed in the Adirondacks. Apparently bears in that region have learned how to open these.
Edit: The bearvault cannisters are apparently now allowed in the Adirondack mountains but the DEC highly discourages the use of these containers, due to bears and other critters being able to chew threw the material.
Very good to know!
While it is true that there have been cases of bears breaking into Bear Vault canisters in the High Peaks there is no regulation explicitly prohibiting them - I checked the NY DEC website and the only thing they say is the canister must be hard sided and commercially made as a bear canister.
A lot of the attention on Bear Vaults came from a NY Times article about one particular bear named Yellow Yellow that had somehow decoded the Bear Vault latch. She didn't tear it apart....she opened it! But that bear was taken by hunters in 2012, so unless she trained a replacement the risk may be lower now.
I want one.
They are a great asset! Thanks for watching!
Whats the diameter of the mouth? I would like to keep a small pot in there if possible.
Let me check!
Good video, how come no-one talks about trash? You need to put your trash in a bear safe place too.
thanks,,
Absolutely. I always keep a extra zip lock bag in the vault to manage trash. Thanks for watching!
Seriously? You place a ziplock bag in the bag and pack it out. There’s nothing to talk about. So simple.
Any idea what it weighs when full?
I don’t know to be honest. Really depends what your packing in it. This video was almost two years ago so that food is long gone 😂
@@SouthernHike No worries! Just hadn't packed one myself so I was kind of curious. Appreciate the response!
I enjoy Nuun too. Are bears attracted to it when it's dissolved in a hydration bladder?
I can’t answer that but I know for sure bears can be attracted to anything.
You got to fit your fuel and toiletries in there still too no?
toiletries yes! I have never carried my fuel in there.
Bears supposedly go after fuel also I heard. Although unless they bite it I suppose no need to stick it in there. I dunno just learning still :)
That’s news to me. Haha I guess maybe if food scent gets left on it from cooking maybe?
@@SouthernHike Yeah, the theory is that the canister, stove, and cook pot can pick up enough smell from the food while you cook for a bear to detect. I always put my spoon in a bear bag/can/box/etc, and my cook pot or plate/bowl if it actually touched food... The official recommendations are to include the stove and gas as well, but it sure seems like most people don't actually include those.
So what is the weight of canister
33 ounces
