I have used many bore cleaners and have switched to the patch out cleaner now all the bench rest guys use it with great results , I think the most important part is start a good cleaning on a new barrel and keep it clean through its life and Dewy rod and jags are my choice and the Pro shot brushes
Excellent video. I had seen you greasing somebodies bolt and I did that to my new Axis II Presicion. But wanted to give it a good clean before heading out in a couple of weeks to zero scope. Ended up buying everything you mentioned here. Hopefully i can give it a good clean. Bolt is lubed and greased. But want to clean the barrel good. Thanks again.
Another outstanding video! I always like to know how the "other guys" do it. Can't stand Sweets 762 and the Montana X-treme darn near killed me! That stuff is SO STRONG it will stop your breathing!! I'll give the Bore Tech CU+2 a try. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us 'mere mortals'...

I can’t stand the smell of Hoppe’s! Keep that stuff out of my tech room! 😆 I’ve become quite fond of Butch’s bore shine. Stronger smell but more tolerable! Turns carbon to paste in minutes and is great on my auto shotgun gas piston! Nice video! Gonna have to pick up some more precision squirt bottles!
Bryan R I also go through a ton of solvent like you do as well.....if this is the same Brian I think it is. The thing about Hoppes is EVERYONE carries it including Wally World. Very helpful when you are flying a lot with guns and need to pick some up for cleaning.
I follow the same procedure for the most part. About the only thing i dont do is remove the brush each time i push it through and its a nylon brush. I run the brush back and forth about 5 times without letting the brush completely exit the bore then patch it out.
Well... first again. I use that same bore guide for my bolt guns and for my ar-type rifles. I just unscrew that piece and slide it up in there and put it through the ejection port and tighten it up. Another great video, I was wondering what you used to remove copper.

Hey Xring, I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for your latest cleaning a precision rifle video. I took copious notes and have tried to follow your recommendations precisely. I do have one question, I hope you can comment further on the issue of copper buildup. I know that some copper buildup is a good thing and facilitates a smooth bore to improve accuracy. I have a Bergara B14 HMR in 6.5 Creedmoor, shooting usually 120 or 140 grain ELD-M. Other than seeing larger groups, is there a recommendation you have about when/how often to clean copper buildup. BTW, best of luck to Mini-X as she becomes a more accomplished shooter and reviewer. She has a great teacher. Best, Sandy
I'v never liked using the nickel plated jag's. Any thing harder than the barrel material can cause damage to the bore if I slip up on the push or, if I fail to remove the jag from the rod on removal from the bore. Or, maybe I'm just too to picky! Haha. Good video X-RING. Thank's
it seems thats a little excessive. i usually just run a brush through with some copper remover. then hit it with a wet patch with copper remover. after that ill hit it with dry patches until it comes out clean and i can look down the bore and see that its shiny. most modern rifles have a chrome lined barrel that really doesn't hold a whole lot of crud. ive talked to military guys that say they didnt ever clean their bore they just sprayed it with a solvent relubricate the moving parts and its good to go.
HeY Xring have you seen the break-in procedure of Christensen Arms barrels.... 50 rounds to break-in the barrel.... neither Bartlein nor Proof-Research go that far with their break-in of barrels. with today's prices here in Denmark, it would cost me $382 to break in a barrel in 6.5 PRC with the ChristensenArms procedure 😁

Ray, I've watched a couple of your cleaning vids and they are superb. In one you clean a "free range" rifle just on a bipod. In the other you have it in a rifle sled or vise. Can you recommend a preferred rifle vise or sled that you like for cleaning and/or that might also double as a rest for shooting?
Oh, you got me on that one. I don’t use any rests or vises for shooting. When I am cleaning I usually just use the bipod or an MTM setup (plastic cradle)

Second, the MTM suggestion is just what I wanted. It's not expensive, but it works. I see now that is what you are using in this vid. Just got a Bergara B14 in 6.5 Creedmoor. Using a Dewey 6.5 cleaning kit. I have the bore guide in there, but I cannot get a 1 1/2" patch to get started down the barrel. I even have the right 6.5 jag. Do you really have to force it that much? Thank you!
I bought a Tikka T3X TAC A1 Rifle 6 months ago and I have not been able to shoot it yet. It stays in a gun case under my bed and my house stays relatively cold. I have not ran oil through the gun or cleaned it at all since purchasing it. Is that bad? What’s the likelihood that I cause damage to my gun?

Quick question for you, have you had any quality issues with that bore guide from tipton? I looked on amazon and some people have had the coating come off from inside on the bore guide due to whatever solvents/brushes they were using. Are they metal or some type of plastic? Some also claimed that the end caps dissolved too. Did you experience any issues of the sort? Very helpful video by the way 👍.
Hello and thanks for the video. I understand that the bore guide helps fluid and debris from being put into the chamber area, but if you are going to clean out the chamber and action area afterwords, why would it matter? Also how is a brass rod used without a bore guide going to ever scratch or damage the much much harder than brass barrel steel? Obviously brass or bronze brushes are used often anyways in your bore to scrub it out. Also why is pulling the brass or bronze brush through the barrel towards the chamber going to damage the much harder barrel steel, or does the brush get trashed when its pulled backwards? Please help me understand the logic behind these frequently mentioned things. Thank you and enjoy shooting! ✌️😎👍
I enjoyed this wealth of knowledge. Would you recommend this process when breaking in a new bartlein barrel ? Most opinions I’ve heard are that you should clean a barrel after every few shots pyramiding up . What’s your opinion and or process?
Thanks Mrcbrrr. Sounds like you might be a motorcycle rider 👍🏼. Anyway, on a premium barrel like a Bartlein I personally shoot 1 and clean. You don’t have to get crazy with it just make sure you have the right tools for the job. Then 3 clean, 5 clean and then I am usually done. Does it matter? I don’t know, but it has worked for me all of these years. I hope this helps and thanks for watching.

I’m a hefty guy so I looked like the bear on the bicycle in the circus lol so I eventually upgraded to an s1000rr and something tells me you’ve ridden one 😆 hard to put into words just how fun, fast and capable that bike is . Sadly I needed a new car so she had to go. Really enjoy your channel- I’m pretty new to precision shooting and just bought a Tikka in 6.5 creedmore. Would be interested in your opinion on how to properly break in the barrel. Have seen many different opinions from no break in necessary to elaborate cleaning after most every shot... Thoughts?
Hey Ray, Great question. I have read, done and tried the methods. I also understand the pros and cons to it. If you have all the necessary stuff to clean correctly i.e. no steel sectional rods etc. then I don’t think it hurts to break them in. Here is what I do with a precision type rifle. This is my personal regimen for what I do. 1. Clean first with solvent and finish up with a dry patch. 2. Shoot 1 and clean. Repeat 3 times. 3. Shoot 3 and clean. Repeat 3 times 4. Shoot 5 and clean. Slow fire no heat. 5. Shoot 10 and clean. Slow fire. What I have found is that the barrels typically don’t hold a lot of copper when broken in this way. Others will have different opinions but this has worked for me for years. Many manufacturers recommend something very similar to this for break in procedures. Thanks for watching.

After your initial cleaning of the rifle from the factory, when you begin steps 2-5, are you cleaning the rifle like you did in this video, ie.with the other solvents,or with just theHoppes no.9? There is a j dewey bore guide that costs more.They asked me what kind of gun I had for some reason?. I have a tikka t3x tac a1 in 6.5.They said had something to do with bolt diameter so I needed a certain guide.I don't see why I can't use the tipton for the tikka.

I feel like once you can notice your accuracy is falling off, you have already waited to long. Personally I clean after every outing, it takes less time to clean it and it stays on top of build up. Kind of like doing dishes, you can wash the plate as soon as you’re done with it, out wait till the sink is completely full and the food is stuck on.
recently I've seen a lot of people claiming that even the soft metal brushes can be harmful to the barrel and many are suggesting nylon brushes as an alternative. whats your thoughts on using nylon vs. phosphor bronze ? I've yet to clean my new Cz and was kinda leaning towards just using nylon as I don't wanna do any damage and go messing up this rifles accuracy. Cheers from Canada!

funny I was just watching your other videos on this yesterday I have a couple of questions 1. I have an AR that has a couple thousand rounds on it and never used the bore tec but I bought some, should I just go ahead and clean it or shoot it some more first been a while since its been shot. 2. Do you de copper your pistol barrels ?
I would go ahead and clean it. The patches will probably come out dark blue for a while. It will also take a bit of time to get it out. Some say you shouldn't de copper your pistol barrels. I do with all of my competition pistols like the Infinity's, Akai's, etc. I do not do it with Glocks etc.
Hi Ray, great video! What type of dispenser bottles are suitable to store and dispense Hoppe 9 bore cleaner and Bore Tech copper remover? Are they both LDPE plastic? I am just trying to make sure I don't contaminate my rifle by various chemicals in case one of these products dissolves dispenser bottle. Thanks!
Question bossguy unrelated (sorry) ... you ever had any issues with bolt override with your AIAX ... since going to 6.5CM I notice bolt missing cartridges ..? ... never had a prob when running the AX308 racked and cricket all day long ??
Yes, and it is magazine related. I know they aren't cheap. If I have one that does that I mark it with an "X" and use it for range work only. I have had 2 out of 10 mags do that so far.

I have been cleaning my gun for 2 and a half hours. The patches still come out dirty. I’ve been alternating between #9 and a clean nylon brush. This type of foiling can’t be common? It’s a rifle I got from consignment.
Thats a good one but you asked. I have to answer it in two parts though. I know you said 1 but this is the best I can do. 1. 223 inexpensive CFE 223 2. 223 for heavier bullets I would use XBR 8208 3. 9mm Titegroup (smokey but works well)

Absolutely agree with you! I never used the Boretech until one of the benchrest National champs told me about it. Those guys know how to clean.
A friend of mine at the gun club swears by it and if I ever have a question about firearms the bench rest shooters are my source

KG 12 is a good copper cleaner as well. I use it as well as the bore tech

I just bought a Tipton bore guide and it came with an AR adapter.
This video resulted in my Amazon account taking a hit lol.....But, I learned so much about precision rifle cleaning.

I bought a Tikka T3X TAC A1 Rifle 6 months ago and I have not been able to shoot it yet. It stays in a gun case under my bed and my house stays relatively cold. I have not ran oil through the gun or cleaned it at all since purchasing it. Is that bad? What’s the likelihood that I cause damage to my gun?

Quick question for you, have you had any quality issues with that bore guide from tipton? I looked on amazon and some people have had the coating come off from inside on the bore guide due to whatever solvents/brushes they were using. Are they metal or some type of plastic? Some also claimed that the end caps dissolved too. Did you experience any issues of the sort? Very helpful video by the way 👍.
Hello and thanks for the video. I understand that the bore guide helps fluid and debris from being put into the chamber area, but if you are going to clean out the chamber and action area afterwords, why would it matter? Also how is a brass rod used without a bore guide going to ever scratch or damage the much much harder than brass barrel steel?
Obviously brass or bronze brushes are used often anyways in your bore to scrub it out. Also why is pulling the brass or bronze brush through the barrel towards the chamber going to damage the much harder barrel steel, or does the brush get trashed when its pulled backwards?
Please help me understand the logic behind these frequently mentioned things.

I enjoyed this wealth of knowledge. Would you recommend this process when breaking in a new bartlein barrel ? Most opinions I’ve heard are that you should clean a barrel after every few shots pyramiding up . What’s your opinion and or process?

Anyway, on a premium barrel like a Bartlein I personally shoot 1 and clean. You don’t have to get crazy with it just make sure you have the right tools for the job.
Then 3 clean, 5 clean and then I am usually done. Does it matter? I don’t know, but it has worked for me all of these years. I hope this helps and thanks for watching.

I’m a hefty guy so I looked like the bear on the bicycle in the circus lol so I eventually upgraded to an s1000rr and something tells me you’ve ridden one 😆 hard to put into words just how fun, fast and capable that bike is . Sadly I needed a new car so she had to go. Really enjoy your channel- I’m pretty new to precision shooting and just bought a Tikka in 6.5 creedmore. Would be interested in your opinion on how to properly break in the barrel. Have seen many different opinions from no break in necessary to elaborate cleaning after most every shot...

Great question. I have read, done and tried the methods. I also understand the pros and cons to it. If you have all the necessary stuff to clean correctly i.e. no steel sectional rods etc. then I don’t think it hurts to break them in.
Here is what I do with a precision type rifle.
This is my personal regimen for what I do.
1. Clean first with solvent and finish up with a dry patch.
2. Shoot 1 and clean. Repeat 3 times.
3. Shoot 3 and clean. Repeat 3 times
4. Shoot 5 and clean. Slow fire no heat.
5. Shoot 10 and clean. Slow fire.
What I have found is that the barrels typically don’t hold a lot of copper when broken in this way.
Others will have different opinions but this has worked for me for years.
Many manufacturers recommend something very similar to this for break in procedures.

After your initial cleaning of the rifle from the factory, when you begin steps 2-5, are you cleaning the rifle like you did in this video, ie.with the other solvents,or with just theHoppes no.9? What about a suppressed precision AR ?
There is a j dewey bore guide that costs more.They asked me what kind of gun I had for some reason?. I have a tikka t3x tac a1 in 6.5.They said had something to do with bolt diameter so I needed a certain guide.I don't see why I can't use the tipton for the tikka.
As long as it fits you are good for the bolt guide. Sometimes the collar for the bolt guide won’t fit in certain actions.

I would remove it. You don’t want solvent or possibly a patch getting stuck in a suppressor.

Great advice. I used to do that but now just finish up with the hoppes 9 and a dry patch.
I feel like once you can notice your accuracy is falling off, you have already waited to long. Personally I clean after every outing, it takes less time to clean it and it stays on top of build up. Kind of like doing dishes, you can wash the plate as soon as you’re done with it, out wait till the sink is completely full and the food is stuck on.
recently I've seen a lot of people claiming that even the soft metal brushes can be harmful to the barrel and many are suggesting nylon brushes as an alternative. whats your thoughts on using nylon vs. phosphor bronze ? I've yet to clean my new Cz and was kinda leaning towards just using nylon as I don't wanna do any damage and go messing up this rifles accuracy. Cheers from Canada!

Sorry, for the delay. I never run my brush backwards. Push through and then remove. Keeps from getting all of the crud back into the action area.

funny I was just watching your other videos on this yesterday I have a couple of questions 1. I have an AR that has a couple thousand rounds on it and never used the bore tec but I bought some, should I just go ahead and clean it or shoot it some more first been a while since its been shot. 2. Do you de copper your pistol barrels ?
I would go ahead and clean it. The patches will probably come out dark blue for a while. It will also take a bit of time to get it out.
Some say you shouldn't de copper your pistol barrels. I do with all of my competition pistols like the Infinity's, Akai's, etc.
I do not do it with Glocks etc.
Hi Ray, great video! What type of dispenser bottles are suitable to store and dispense Hoppe 9 bore cleaner and Bore Tech copper remover? Are they both LDPE plastic? I am just trying to make sure I don't contaminate my rifle by various chemicals in case one of these products dissolves dispenser bottle. Thanks!

Question bossguy unrelated (sorry) ... you ever had any issues with bolt override with your AIAX ... since going to 6.5CM I notice bolt missing cartridges ..? ... never had a prob when running the AX308 racked and cricket all day long ??
Yes, and it is magazine related. I know they aren't cheap. If I have one that does that I mark it with an "X" and use it for range work only. I have had 2 out of 10 mags do that so far.

I have been cleaning my gun for 2 and a half hours. The patches still come out dirty. I’ve been alternating between #9 and a clean nylon brush. This type of foiling can’t be common? It’s a rifle I got from consignment.
If it’s that stubborn you might want to switch to a bronze brush for a few minutes. Just dont drag it backwards if you can help it.

If you had to pick one powder for reloading 223/556 which would you choose and same question for 9mm?
Thats a good one but you asked. I have to answer it in two parts though. I know you said 1 but this is the best I can do.
1. 223 inexpensive CFE 223
2. 223 for heavier bullets I would use XBR 8208
3. 9mm Titegroup (smokey but works well)

Puts a rag under the bore guide, doesn’t use the solvent port???? Smacking the crown pulling back through..,
What about the chamber? It gets fouled as well.
I forgot to mention that I usually use a brush wrapped with a patch to clean the chamber. Hoppes and then a dry patch.
