    I lived in Madrid for 4 years and was very happy there 🙂 I became a completely fluent Spanish speaker, with no accent, and had only Spanish friends. Worked for Spanish companies and made good money. Travelled all over the country with my friends. This looks like an elephant cemetery for Brits!

      There’s actually more Spanish, Russians, and Ukrainians in Torrevieja. Madrid is lovely. Half of the holiday homes in Torrevieja are owned by people from Madrid. 🙂. Good on you for learning to be completely fluent in Spanish, that’s an incredible achievement. We’ve explored a fair bit of the Mediterranean coast line of Spain now and look forward to trips further north. Thanks for watching.

    We bought a apartment in La Zenia 1998. Always holidayed in Feb as it was quiet. But Toriviecha was never that quiet mid afternoon . There was plenty of locals still around then. Also there weren't any pedestrianised streets either and bars were busy with food and drink although not all were open. We did notice that the market that was on the front of an evening which❤ mid 2000s was absolutely heaving and felt as if it had its own weather system , by 2019 it was smaller less choice and not as popular. From visiting Spain as much as 8 times a year to twice in 2018 we decided to sell. And Aug 2019 was our last visit to sign it over to new owners. Word of caution to Spanish property owners. Although we didn't loose out on the sale of our modest apartment, the Spanish red (and black tape) will always find a charge that you MUST pay if you want to proceed with selling your property. And don't expect your solicitor and estate agent are on your side. They make sure their interests are covered first and foremost. And so does everyone else that wants to cash in on your sale. Cash is still king.
    Whatever profit you might be told to expect take with a pinch of salt.

    el problema de torreviaja es que creció demasiado aprisa y no modernizó su núcleo urbano para ser el centro neurálgico de toda la costa blanca. son calles angostas y pequeñas, imposibles para el tráfico de coches, mal planificadas, y los edificios abalconados han envejecido mal en su mayoría. supongo que la remodelación del puerto servirá para ir abriendo las calles del extrarradio y descongestionar el centro, de forma parecida a cómo fue desahogándose el centro de la ciudad de murcia debido a la peatonalización de los aledaños del cc ´´el corte inglés´´.
    torrevieja tenía otro sentido en los años 60, 70, 80, e incluso hasta mediados de los 90, era un ambiente diferente, más rural, de pequeño pueblo pesquero. todos los bares y restaurantes eran diferentes con un ambiente más castizo español. mi padre echa de menos ese ambiente, la verdad es que era mucho más familiar y acogedor, pero el tiempo pasa... aún así, creo que la modernización era necesaria debido a su crecimiento por el atractivo de toda la zona, que incluye esos campos de golf de interés internacional, o las mismas playas que, sinceramente, creo que se han quedado pequeñas para la afluencia que tienen en temporada alta de verano. creo incluso que la playa de los náufragos se irá extendiendo artificialmente hacia ´´la veleta´´ y ´´mar azul´´, si es que la misma naturaleza del fondo marino así lo permite, tal como ya pasó en la playa de ´´cala capitán´´ de cabo roig, la cual era muy distinta en los 90 (increíblemente distinta).
    en fin, creo que las obras de la nueva zona de ocio del puerto de torrevieja acabarán completamente sobre el verano de 2025 ó 2026, siempre hay aplazamientos y sobrecostes por imprevistos. y supongo que entonces se irá transformando todo lo de alrededor, incluyendo esa plaza de la iglesia antigua, la cual también pide a gritos una renovación.

    • @ixlnxs
      @ixlnxs Před 3 měsíci

      Esas "calles angostas y pequeñas" son justo lo que visitantes e inmigrantes aprecian. Abrir calles a más tráfico vehicular las convierte un carreteras y nadie quiero comprar un piso en una carretera. Temo que Torrevieja terminará como Agadir o Playa del Inglés/Maspalomas, lugares ideadas para coches y odiadas por la gente que debería atraer.

    Those days are long gone and I mean long gone.We have been here permanently for 26years.If you were here then you would understand.We bought our first house in Pesetas and when the boom years came we sold it for 4times more than what we paid for it and did what a lot of Brits. were doing at the time.Selling on the coast and moving inland where properties were still as cheap as chips.You have to remember as well when the Euro came in we were getting roughly 1.56€ to the pound.I remember you could buy a T shape villa on it's own plot with a pool for 20million Pesetas.Joking apart me and the wife are ex bar owners,that was some experience.Used to do a tubo and tapa 100Pesetas.I also think half the people that appear on the TV programmes have no intentions of buying,they just want the bragging rites to their friends.Has Spain come to the end of it's sell buy date? Only time will tell.A greeting.

    8 years ago myself and my Polish wife moved to Gdynia where we bought 2 apartments 1 to live & for rent prior to Brexit was very easy since then we sold both at a healthy profit and Bought a new house only problem was that being a non EU I was not allowed to own the property had to buy in my Polish wife only took us 11months to get approval from Polish authorities to split ownership 50/50

      There's a reason for that. A property purchase still involves "black money " or cash. Paid to anyone who you need a signature from. Officials bankers estate agents land owners etc . Paid by you once and then divided between them. Tax evasion to you and me. Although it reduces your gross obviously.

    Do you think the mass refusal of residence visas to Brits in the second half of last year, as we approached the Brexit transitional deadline, is part of the problem? There are loads of Brits at home this winter due to the 90 day rule restricting their traditional winter in Spain. Some I know are also considering selling up for good.

    • @ScottishCoupleInSpain
      @ScottishCoupleInSpain  Před 3 měsíci +4

      No, not at all. Brits aren't the biggest expats in Torrevieja now. They have been overtaken by Russia and Ukraine. People in the UK knew Brexit would take them out of Europe and the EU! That's the reason we made the move in 2020. The population of Torrevieja is not going down. It's going up! Brexit has had no impact on Spain and tourists. They have just had the best year ever for tourists in Spain.

      There is no doubt post Brexit has impacted on people from the UK buying in EU countries due to 90/180 Schengen stay rules AND the far more onerous visa eligibility financial criteria now required meaning getting visas is more difficult. If all you want is short term frequent stay holiday home then the 90/180 day may not be a problem but many others want more flexibility in how/when they can use a property they own which means 90/180 rule is definitely a disincentive to buy.

    its the £28000 proof of income each year for 5 years thats stopping me moving now on an NLV,im only 51 so cant get pensions for ages.but if i could get a sponsor for a job id sell my house and move now,buy a property with uk house sale and work in Spain.prices are climbing high and im worried i will be priced out of the market the longer i wait.

      Why don't you rent for as long as you can, why buy?

      @@patti4785 if i rent the money from uk house sale wont last 5 years of rent,utility bills,health cover,bank charges,living costs and proof of funds for 5 years.if i buy i can use any left over from uk sale as lump sum as proof of funds to last 5 years for residency on NLV.after 5 years on NLV you can apply for residency then you can work (or after 1 if you find a job).

    Businesses: The rents are FAR too expensive, and what with taxes, national insurance, public liability, SUMA, Electricity and Gas costs + there is not enough people who have the money to eat out even during the day.
