Best song she ever did, no contest. Amazing singing performance of an extremely beautiful, moving song. How this wasn't a huge hit perplexes me.
I first heard this haunting song on the radio in the mid seventies and instantly it was one of my favorites. I remembered the radio stations did not play it a lot and as someone mentioned on this post it was not a big hit. I used to get mad when I would be switching radio stations and finally find it playing but it would be more then half over. Thanks to the internet and you tube, I now can listen to it anytime. Ronstadt really puts her soul into singing this one.
In two words simply beautiful. Everything Linda touched turned to gold including the collection of songs remade and written by such introspective artists as Karla Bonoff. This gem is from the very lovely Hasten Down The Wind album. Every track on it is a winner and Linda makes this song her own.
Linda ronstadt is what the universe creates when it's showing off.
In High School -1976, we actually were taught electricity and electronics. We were taught Ohm's law inside and out - and many other electrical properties. Anyway, we had a bunch of OLD radios donated from the local hospital that at one time were mounted on patient's walls so they could listen to AM radio stations in the area (I guess before they had TVs in the rooms). Some didn't work right away and needed realigning. Me and my buddy got ours going and this was the first tune that came in. Never forget that...
Thanks to Karla Bonoff for writing such a masterpiece! This was the voice of an angel silenced by Parkinson's. Tragedy!
I call her The Voice for a reason. Theres very few singers that can cover songs and completely make em their own. Bless Linda always
Cannot count the number of phonograph needles I wore out playing this album over and over again back in the day. Karla Bonhoff reigned supreme as song writer, Linda as the best interpreter of her music.
This song still gets you right in the heart ...
What an incredible song by an incredible vocalist, Linda , you will not be topped.
When Linda sang, God was speaking.
"Still you know, that may be all you get..." WOW!!! I'd forgotten what an intense and haunting anthem this was for my late teens and early adulthood... Back then, we didn't have Smartphones and video games to keep us mindlessly distracted for hours each day... so we clung to our music to give us refuge, respite and release.
That album was worth buying just for the cover. Damn, she was beautiful.
Andrew Gold's intro alone breaks my heart.
Thankyou GOD for this woman
Linda won a Grammy for this masterpice album. She reaches new heights with her voice on this album. Her power, tenderness, and range are clearly on display. Amazingly, Linda's voice would get even better in her later work, partly because vocal lessons she began taking for Pirates of Penzance and into her Nelson Riddle recordings. Linda Ronstadt is the greatest, most diverse female vocalist of her generation. A unique talent and body of work like no other.
Every time I hear this I am transported to the first time I heard it. Sitting with a college classmate in his home, after dinner together, kissing and cuddling. Wonderful memories!
Karla Bonoff was an underrated songwriter.
Almost no mention of how much credit belongs to the person who wrote this extraordinary song, Karla Bonoff. The arrangement, too, is outstanding. Every aspect and element of this song makes it as stunning as it is. And, of course, it's Linda Ronstadt's incomparable vocal that elevates the whole thing. Incredible song.
Masterpiece of an album. I love you so much, Linda ❤
