There’s a big difference between a state giving tax incentives to win over creation of jobs for its citizens vs a government subsidy to encourage something that is already happening. Makers already have many new EV models coming out over the next couple of years and Tesla is not the only mfr that cannot roll them out of production faster than people put in their orders.

Why should the working tax payer give money to corporations who failed to invest capital in R&D, made poor business strategy decisions who are now unable to compete head to head? The free market rewards business that aligns with future market demand. Tesla is doing so brilliantly. Green energy is not necessarily competitive currently. Certainly not several years ago. Oil is a mature industry and the subsides it receives are tiny compared to its revenue. Besides the biggest oil subsidy is that pollution is socialized and paid for by society as a whole, not by individual oil and gas companies.
Another thing is that oil (ie gas) is taxed way higher in most developed countries such as the European ones and thus their vehicle fleet is far more fuel efficient and their vehicle owners are more resilient to increases in the global crude oil (and thus gas) prices. People buy giant pickups when gas is cheap and act surprised when gas prices go up - compare pictures of European highways to American highways (hint: American cars are much bigger on average)

If someone takes a 0.5 bi loan its because they need them, at that point in time they had no alternatives and not surprisingly the conditions were harsh but... the alternative was going under. When they had better financing options they paid for early repayment (very normal). This is the same aid US the auto industry received in 2009, when they were out of options to obtain finance instead of going under and adding a couple of millions to unemployment in a very difficult moment to the industry the government step up and provide the loans that kept them alive, and those loans are also fully repaid long ago.
The point here is if you accept government as an economic agent that intervenes in the economy when they think is needed or just a regulator that does not intervenes even when things have gone south. Musk benefited a lot of government intervention and support of his endeavors so its hypocritical some of the comments he made specially considering that between 2017-2019 US were generating the higher budget deficits ever in times of reasonable economic growth and he stood silent. Tesla helped make the expensive parts of an EV become far cheaper. When they started, high energy cells were $600-$1,000 a kWh and now they are $100-125/kWh. They proved the market and the technology. The current EV incentive plan was idiotic with a per manufacturer cap which punished the pioneers and rewards the laggards. So Tesla has been operating without the federal tax credit incentive for over a year while the laggards of the industry still have theirs. How is that fair?
If BBB passes, then Tesla gets new incentives which actually helps them a lot. Musk is saying not to do that. And also, at the same time, reduce the fossil fuel incentives - Tesla and others can then compete on a level playing field with gas vehicles if the incentives for gasoline and other fossil fuel production are also removed.

At this point it will help his competition giving them the same benefits he received in building his business. If it stops now it will be much harder for a company to rise to compete with Elon in that market and he knows it so of course he's going to push back. He doesn't care about the environment, he cares about his bottom line, and he is smart enough to know that this package will easily pay for itself in money we don't have to spend to fix problems later.... not to mention most of the stuff in it goes to the everyday person for once instead of big business and the rich. These bastards can't help but try to horde every advantage for themselves. It's time the everyday American tax payer got something real for their investment in taxes instead of just padding the riches pockets. There is a reason the wealth gap has grown so much and it comes down to the rich making sure every edge the government gives serves them instead of the average everyday citizen. Once the supply chain is fixed from covid inflation will be a non issue, but the insane growth we've seen from investing in the everyday person is obviously the better way than the 1.4 trillion tax break to corporations that yielded America nothing. It's better to invest in your people than in the few rich folks at the top. Trump created the largest deficit in 4 years in history.. 7.8 trillion... Biden has quite a ways to go to catch up with that spending.... and what did we get from trumps tax breaks for the rich? Nothing. @@seanpierre1338 That is only partially correct. If the number of stocks never changes then you are correct. A company can, however, directly make money from stocks rising in price when making secondary offerings at an inflated price. Obviously a higher price means more money for the company.

"Our spending is so far in excess of revenue its insane"- Elon. He was not talking about his company which most including this journalist is missing. US is earning more than it earns. Adding to that when large companies invest money [don't forget this money belongs to the people even though the banks are dealing with the finance] this bill if goes forward will add to that negative revenue of US. This will be like buying a gun with your own money and shooting your foot. US needs to be careful how it discourages its potential companies, specially when China is so willing to invest anywhere they can.
Please watch the full interview of Elon from start to end to understand what Elon was pointing to. Do not draw conclusion with just one line. He was pointing about US economy how it works and where it is headed and not his pocket.

This seems to check all the boxes of a great presentation. But take another listen. In five minutes, we touch upon muliple global companies, the energy sector, two national economies, national deficits, interest rates, subsidies, the latest statements from a billionaire entrepreneur's interview, and more. Are you kidding? We are left with a relatively unclear inference injected with profundity. A man gets smaller with every wink and nod. This is an editorial comprised of cleverly arranged facts and statements ornamented with sweeping statistics. The associations and contradictions he highlights would be newsworthy, indeed, if every hinted correlation he submits is true. This is someone trying to do your thinking for you. This is not journalism. to create an air of association or contradiction.

It’s called,”Fareed’s Take” because it’s a discussion of a topic to think about and reflect upon. He’s simply debating a point: shouldn’t others get help funding new innovations. He simply brings up the possibility of creating opportunities. Both points of view are valid! However if you take the best of both ideas, what you end up getting is a Government that will have to create restrictions and further involvement, but then you get is that at one time EM mentioned that he believes that Government should have less involvement. So, the debate only leads to something like a lot of red tape, but the US needs to be a fast Innovator and getting bogged down & slowed down isn’t advantageous as a Nation.

By creating the two most important companies in history? Cleaning the air from polluting Fossil Fuel vehicles that slowly poison EVERYONE around them as they drive anywhere and idle in traffic.
Getting to actual majority renewables will save millions of live per year globally...and make them healthier and wealthier the more accessible energy is from renewables.
Don't confuse someone who stared down the collapse of BOTH of his companies and thus understand that even the "Biggest Corporation" aka the US Gov. can print too much and fall just like Rome or Germany or any other country that got too far out in front of its own skis...
