CNN’s Fareed Zakaria blasts woke Universities like Harvard with deep political agendas. Must watch!

  • Fareed, Zakaria, criticizes “elite “universities, like Harvard University of Pennsylvania, MIT and others, with deep political, and DEI agendas which are hurting our young. Fareed urges are returned to academic excellence and research and suggest a quick step back from non-merit-based the failing DEI-focused approach. House committee hearing on Capitol Hill on December 5, three prominent university presidents-Elizabeth Magill of the University of Pennsylvania (who has since resigned), Sally Kornbluth of MIT, and Claudine Gay of Harvard-gave appalling responses to the question of whether they would permit calls for genocide on their campuses.

      Yes CNN is way more guilty of all these prejudices than Harvard. CNN is now nothing more than a propaganda machine for the most strident of woke activists.
      They regularly have discussion panels consisting of only women, overly represented ethnic minorities and if there is a white man present he will inevitably be Jewish. Not diverse and definitely not representative of American demographics.

      The talk against DEI, and woke, is an attempt by both the far right and far left to modify the originally woke purpose, which was to be aware of institutionalized systemic racism. The current trend to remove DEI and any other measure establish to correct 300 years of unfair, unjust treatment, is just s trend. Truth is light , no one can deny it or control it. When the supreme court judges have been change to allow a liberal majority, when just senators and congressmen are voted back in , when the public disgrace of trump and his follower are finally remove, or put in prison. DEI type laws and laws that support justice equality for all, will be voted back in. I see this as a consent movement going from good to bad. Trump like figures will reappear in another 100 years, like Hitler, and those type. Voicing hate, because this is basically a battle between good and evil. That has existed since Cain and Able, this battle will possible never end. So for now I would suggest that minorities simple start filing lawsuit because there will be cases of gross unfair treatment discrimination. Because today the supremacist feel that they can do anything, so you can simply document their unfair treatment, and again file lawsuits, make it rain with lawsuits, and get paid. Do this until the truth deniers are remove and sane people are again in control.

    This is the culmination of over 40 years of rot in universities. I retired from one in 2014 unable to keep up the fight against it any longer. I can only hope that it is a boil which, having now burst open in public, can be treated and healed, but every force in the academy--professors' need to publish (which is a lot easier if some new ideology reinvents the wheel every ten years) and administrators' efforts to cater to the spoiled "customers"--mitigates against reform.

    Well-stated. As a former college dean we had to navigate these straits on a daily basis. Fortunately my college was for science and engineering. I could share many stories but one of my favorites was when I was asked to chair a search for the dean of Liberal Arts. In reviewing the ad which extolled many strong points of study and research on our campus, our unmanned aerial systems program was listed. There was an objection that since unmanned was in the title it might put off candidates as uninclusive. My response was that if a candidate felt threatened by that, the college would be better hiring someone else who could attend to the real problems they faced…funding, enrollment and program development. Some discussion started about changing the name of our program and I said if we did that then we should let members of the college of science and engineering review names of liberal arts programs for offensive names. I also pointed out that women on our faculty didn’t care about that…they were concerned about support for their research programs. In the end, they only highlighted liberal arts in the ad.

That it was in response to universities not prohibiting demonstrations in defense of Palestinians is what triggered this for him. This just proves how he was a fake Muslim-Arab addition to make it seem that CNN is balanced. He and the other fake Christiane Amanpour were allowed on occasion to pretend to take the Muslim position in discussions. But now that things have become more contentious and the uniform American public support for Israel is eroding, these two stooges have revealed their true colors and what is really hidden about them just below the surface. CNN is presently owned by Warner Brothers which is a Jewish run corporation so there's no wonder that these two fakes are willing to serve as water boys for those that pay them hefty salaries. But from now they need to stop the charade of representing a Muslim perspective

      a big part of this is the obsession with STEM and viewing education as a springboard to a profitable career, rather than education having value in of itself. humanities departments are being gutted everywhere because they don't lead directly to as many high paying jobs as STEM. but the value of a classic liberal arts education is in teaching the student like you said, how to think, how to analyze problems, and have a decent amount of knowledge in a varitey of subjects. Instead we have grads who go directly into making a lot of money programming or in business, but they didn't actually learn anything about the world or themselves. I guess this is the inevitable outcome when Greed and materialism are the underlying values that drives our whole society.

The Humanities departments have all caved to or embraced wokeness and "subjective truth" has replaced discriminating analysis (I've spent the last 6 years in university humanities studies).@@antonego9581

      Take it from me, a college professor, we are expected to pass everyone through. It's about increasing the retention numbers because that translates into more dollars. Excellence in education went by the wayside with George Bush's No Child Left Behind legislation. It started in K-12 and has matriculated into higher ed. It's been about getting greater numbers into the institutions, getting them through as fast as possible and hand them a degree on the other side. Focus and resources have gone to research and sports because that's where the money is. Today's higher ed institutions are just large corporations with marketing and branding campaigns. If a faculty member tries to focus on excellence in education and hold students accountable for their learning, all students have to do is complain to a dean or administrator that we are "too hard" or "too unfair" and we are expected to back down. Believe me, I've been here, and not backing down got me disciplined with a threat of termination so I moved on to a different job. This transition in education has been happening for 25 years, but everyone is finally waking up to it. Some good books to read on this topic are William Deresiewicz's Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of America's Elite, and John Smyth's The Toxic University: Zombie Leadership, Academic Rock Stars and Neoliberal Ideology.

    This ideology is happening in Canada in my school board. We have some specialized programs - arts, technology, maths, etc. we moved from an ‘audition’ intake where you had to show a portfolio, do an audition for performance, have good math scores, etc. Now it’s a 100% lottery. So you could get accepted to a music program without having any music training, etc. it is utterly ridiculous, and not addressing the root causes of the issues. It just makes it worse for those underrepresented groups we’re trying to uplift.

    I am so glad for my university education that I received 40 years ago. I am equally glad that I talked my great-nephew out of going to college and that he has developed a talent for the trades. In the 60's and 70's a college degree was a guarantee that the graduate would earn more than someone with just a high school education. Thus, more and more parents wanted their kids to go to college. Now universities have lost their credibility and a lot of people who shouldn't be in college are earning useless degrees.

But now they're buried in student debt. In the beginning I told them, enjoy yourself, do what you want...but don't get an "Underwater Basket Weaver" degree....That you need to take SOMEthing worthwhile that'll pay your basic bills at a minimum. They're both doing well, not even close to wealthy, but well. I love learning too, and I have a very large library on many subjects but mostly various historical periods,, human genetics, social issues, human behavior, classics, and a tiny bit of fiction. I worked trades, factories, military, and firefighting. I don't have a degree (just a bunch of credits) but would get calls/texts/emails from the kids to read over a paper, or for advice on various subjects they were studying. One had to move to Alaska for their higher salaries to make a decent living, the other told me that the only part of her Masters program that was useful in her job (other than having the required piece of paper) was a two month summer hands-on internship. The rest of it was fluff when it came to getting and doing the job.
      When I was a kid, I thought of a degree as leading to being a professor, or big money finance guy, or doctor, or scientist. Not obliterated by debt, working a Starbucks, and having a degree in " D.E.I. considerations in Modern Lesbian Dance Theory...which is the new stereotype. The current trend to remove DEI and any other measure establish to correct 300 years of unfair, unjust treatment, is just s trend. Truth is light , no one can deny it or control it. As a retired professor who taught philsophy at a public university I share some of his concerns, though his statements are too sweeping and unqualified. Engineering and the sciences have not been much affected by these political trends and he gives them no attention at all. The claim that no white male studying the American presidency could gain tenure today is almost certainly false. I dislike identity politics with its trigger warnings, safe spaces, victimized groups, emphasis on sexual orientation, race, and ethnicity, and watched it trickle down to my own former institution. However important elite universities are, the vast majority of students are educated at state universities and colleges and we are under threat from Republican politicians who relish the chance to politicize them while using free speech and freedom of thought as cover. One should also note the progress for women in obtaining degrees at every level and this is the result of merit, higher grades, and scores on objective tests. For the last six or seven years women have been a slight majority of medical students, over 70% of veterinary students are women, and there is parity in the sciences in virtually every field except engineering. (And I do not believe that is the result of sexist male administrators.) All said, I am glad I am retired and don't have to deal with the threats from the far left and right that I contended with.

    While the university presidents answers were technically correct when citing American free speech laws, they have fired teachers, punished, and even expelled students for saying things like there's only 2 genders. Conservative speakers can't even come on campus because the college supports the students who are disrupting the event instead of the event organizers. Students coming out of these colleges have only been taught the leftist viewpoints and think that Conservative thought is less educated, old-fashioned way of thinking so even when they graduate they don't study Conservative thought because of the bias taught in Ivy leagues.
    We want our students learning both types of thoughts, debating the flaws and merits of each in open, honest discussion. That's why these presidents need to go and all these leftist professors need to start accepting viewpoints other than their own in their classes without jumping into labeling a student as homophobic,racist, Islamophobic etc just because they disagree with you on a policy.

Cheekbone surgery, breast implants, lipo suction and all the other attempts at making yourself look more female are not goign to make you a female. Conservatives have concerned themselves so heavily with christianity and the profit of corporations that they have abandoned observable, functional reality and the progress of human knowledge. Things like "Pollution is threatening food sources and needs to be curbed" are considered radical instead of a logical conclusion to looking at the data. Agreed, they probably, and not unreasonably, thought there was no need to declare a commitment to the centrality of free speech to university life. Why state the obvious?
    Also, they *did* make it abundantly clear that when offensive speech turns into targeted harassment, it becomes actionable conduct. Their only mistake was in underestimating the insane Elise Stefanik’s ability to spin ‘it depends on the context’ as symptomatic of antisemitism. The optics were dismal, but the presidents’ answers were not incorrect.

      It’s reflective of what’s happening in society… too much extremism on both sides of the aisle. If you were to look at Liberty U, you would see a right wing nationalist curriculum. Geez, just look at the republikkkan House of Reps. 😳 A clown circus.

    As big an issue as it is in the US, any parent who REALLY wants their child to come away from college completely indoctrinated in wokeness should send them to school in Canada.
    Dirt cheap, and (with apologies to Dunkin Donuts) "Canada runs on woke!"
    Your child will be self-loathing and insecure for life.

    The fact that a CNN anchor is saying this publicly blows my mind. That network has been a big part of why this has been allowed to happen in the first place. But I’ll gladly take it and hopefully someone’s listening to him.

      The CNN folks still largely agree with the university policies. They are upset because the policies are seeing daylight and polling badly. They want administrators to appear to dial it back 2% until the scrutiny goes away, and then go back to business as usual. It's also CNN's opportunity to say "See how reasonable we are?"

    Fareed you missed one major thing. Today's universities operate very much like corporations where profit margin is the only thing that matters. Grade inflation exists because of the enormous money parents pay so students feel entitled to buy the degrees. Political decisions are made not to upset wealthy donors. Faculty are promoted based on how much federal dollars they bring, overheads keep increasing year after year, and so do the number of Provost and their salaries.

    • @mathewrussell926
      @mathewrussell926 Před 5 měsíci

      It's because universities get funding for producing new cutting edge concepts never before created. Unfortunately this means philosophy departments have to publish more and more out there ideas, in the instance of the French Philosophies coming out of academia in the 1970's. Then philosophy affects society and a self-perpetuating cycle is created to create, for lack of a better term, Bizzaro World.

      @nicholam7819 I think Fareed Zakaria's commentary is quite excellent given that it lasts for 6 minutes, but you are also right.
      In Canada, I am also finding that universities are run like corporations. So we have the interplay of three variables (woke left, universities, and dependence on profit as government investments in university decline) and the result particularly for the humanities is incredibly poor scholarship. I would argue that diversity training itself has also suffered and been dumbed-down as a direct consequence of capitalism coopting diversity training, because when profit gets mixed up with diversity training, bad things usually happen. I was once given a scenario where one co-worker asks another co-worker what his favorite Disney princess is and whether I thought there was anything wrong with that. I knew the answer to the question of course, being well versed in woke left think, but it really shows how academic standards crater when money gets involved.

    • @GetstartedYang
      @GetstartedYang Před 5 měsíci +1

      I don’t think so. Devalue academic standards will eventually destroy the value of the university as industrial society will not recognize the value of the degrees.

      I think grade inflation is definitely a problem. I taught at an elite liberal arts college for six years and there was definitely indirect pressure not to give students bad grades. In fact one had to write a written justification if one gave an F grade. I did not feel so much pressure to give A or A- grades. But if I gave a B or B+, I would always have in the back of my mind the fear that the student might retaliate by giving me an anonymous negative review (every professor was reviewed for each course they taught). Since I was not tenure track and held another, permanent position in the college, it did not worry me too much, but if I had been an assistant professor or an instructor it would have been stressful.
