Where has the narrative that mainoo is a quality holding midfielder come from. Anyone who watched that fa cup game would have seen that his best moments were in an advanced number 8 role, for most of that game, the United midfield was non existent when defending.

Because people only look at moments from games instead of actually being objective. And once the hype train gets built around a player people start seeing and hearing what they want to believe instead of the actual product on the field. Commentators do it as well.
Anyone who has watched Declan Rice would know that his best moments are as an 8 as well but he still gets talked about like he’s a CDM. Football supporters aren’t the brightest

The problem is outlets like TalkSport don’t very often go into the nuances of the game and just play for clicks saying players are either “top players”, a “disgrace” or “world class.” They very rarely mention all the shades in between and what actually creates those shades in specific situations. Easy example is McTominay at United. His ability to time his runs late into the box and score a few vital goals this year have lead to him getting a lot of positive praise. But you never hear analysts talk about how he is actually a key reason why United constantly lose midfield battles. And you never hear them say where he’d actually perfectly fit in. Which is under Dsyche at Everton because that style of play actually fits McTominay.
@@TP-pq9xxhaha you haven't watched Declan, if you think the plaudits is because of his role as a number 8. Rice is a defensive unit and a machine. He is much more defensive aware than Mainoo and covers a lot more ground.

Jones has to start occasionally. You control games with Jones. I think he would suprise a lot of people. England have players. Imagine a manager brave enough to pick a team for each challenge. The only thing I rate Southgate for is seeing Trent as a midfielder.

The kid has 0 fear, and plays like a veteran. Not just in flashes...every game he's played so far.i just worry that Southgate's tactics will stifle him. All we can do is wait and see.

Same, even with the injuries and suspensions Madrid have still rested Bellingham for games this season. When you have a super talent Utds way is to run them into the ground, look at Rooney, Garnacho is another one who needs to be rested for games who has played a lot over these past 2 seasons. When they rest they can recuperate so when they do play they play better plus the desire to play because they have been rested all goes into getting that little bit extra out of performances.

Just cause he has good positioning, good tackling, good physicality, fast feet, great passer, great dribbler, great decision making, can play one touch, skillful, evades pressure with ease, has played for the msot supported and most scrutinised club in england doesn't mean he is good enough for england. We need players who run and win throw ons who can't pass or tackle or players who play for clubs with 40000 average attendance and face no pressure

From a united stanpoint that means he can get the experience of being in an elite knockout comp but also not suffer from fatigue. But also from an england fan standpoint mainoo is so good he covers all positions and can do it all, so if whoever starts isnt doing a good enough job southgate can use mainoo to fix the issue. He can even play as an inverted fullback which he has done for united at times

@@blederin5999 if you play 3 in the middle as a defensive team which Southgate does then neither Henderson or Gallagher are better so who plays? Trent can't play in midfield, dropping into midfield now and then during games where you dominate the ball is significantly different to running a game

Rice as the 6, Mainoo as the 8, Bellingham as the 10. Can't have Mainoo holding. Rice has the physical presence and defensive qualities, whereas Mainoo has the the footwork and the ability to pick the ball up from anywhere and play it forward, out wide, or even run through. He's a roamer.

Yes he has to develop certain skills and experience plus he will get stronger and his stamina has to be increase if he is to play 90 mins regularly. No one ever mentions playing 3- 4 at the back with Stones moving into midfield to join Rice allowing a Foden or a Maddisson to join Bellingham.
Mainoo rice n bellingham is well balanced tbf because mainoo and rice can both sit and can both get forward so can easily rotate between 6 and 8 n let jude do his thing
Bent doesn't know what he's talking about. England basically play a 4 2 3 1 mostly. Now Jude is coming of age they should definitely stick with that. You don't play a specific holder.. you play 2 players in behind your free role Bellingham to protect the defence (while Jude is free to create) and then 3 attackers in front of that. That's essentially 4 up front and 2 behind who can both alternate going forward or sitting in or both sitting in depending on what's required. Full backs also alternate going forward or sitting in (as 3 centre backs) depending on which side the ball is on. In that system Mainoo could only play with Rice behind Bellingham where Phillips has played in the past. He's better on the ball than Phillips, is a better passer, is more mobile and probably improves that team. The starting 11 picks itself now anyway.. the only debate is who plays next to Rice and who plays on the left up front.
Mainoo has potential but he ain't all that (just yet); different position I know but England/Utd wouldn't fall apart without him like say a Kane, Rodri or Saliba and co.
If you play a 3 in midfield and play slightly safe which Southgate does, who have England got that is better than Maino at the moment in that squad? Not Henderson and not Gallagher

Even in the Liverpool game he faded after about 30 minutes and did a couple of good dribbles. Let the lad develop. Also there are other players way more deserving of a call up.

Bellingham and Maddison occupy the same advanced positions and tend to work back into the central midfield to pick the ball up from deep. Watch and learn more football
