2:10 John Wardley explains this reasoning in his autobiography. Apparently, he said, a 14 inversion coaster would require a single lift of around 50 meters / 164 feet- but because of Alton Towers’ famous tree line limit he settled for two 30 meter / 98 feet lifts.

I find it interesting how when it comes to this coaster, many visitors outside of the UK such as from Europe and the USA tend to rate this ride so highly, yet many Brits don't think too much of it.
I myself do rate this ride as good, but honestly, I think Nemesis and Wicker Man at the Towers are far better and more enjoyable, not to mention they both look in a much better state maintenance-wise. Smiler these days looks so grimy, rusty and broken sadly compared to when it was new in 2013 and that 12th inversion on the back row is a killer to your head and neck. >.

I love watching your coaster reviews, because as a fellow enthusiast I love your takes on coasters from all around the world!
As someone who visits Alton Towers a lot (I currently live in London but I’ve lived in the UK all my life) I couldn’t agree more with everything you said! The Smiler is SOOOOOO Alton Towers! It could not be any better of a fit! It is absolutely nuts to me that this ride is 10 years old next May! I remember riding it opening day, and I was only 9 at the time so my mum took me, and we waited 5 hours to ride it, and it was absolute insanity to little 9 year old me, and it still is to this day! Every time I ride it I come off smiling and laughing and I immediately want to hop straight back in line and get on it again!
I cannot wait to see what Alton Towers will do with SW9 in the future, the more recent secret weapons (Th13teen, The Smiler and Wicker Man) show so clearly that Alton Towers is really going to push the boat out as far as they can!

I totally agree with your review. In my opinion, The Smiler is really underrated, especially since the accident. I think that it is an intense, long and enjoyable experience with probably the best airtime moments in Alton Towers (if not the UK). My only complaint is that some restraints may get a bit too tight during the ride. 1st row is clearly the smoothest, but the others are fine too.

Gotta say didn't expect it to be your favorite in ALL of the UK, but I can very well believe it because I loved it, too. I had rides in a couple different seats and noticed a couple bumps here and there, one or two of them more noticeable, but I found it almosted blended in with the overall intensity. The ride is just too crazy not to like and the layout is so well designed. Also, I think there are way too few Sea Serpents out there, they're one of my absolute favorite inversions.

Think a lot of us UK enthusiasts are a bit spoiled when it comes to this ride. People manage to find reasons to hate it, but it's bloody brilliant how much it manages to achieve considering it's purpose. The worlds only 14 inverting coaster has to impress in other areas too, and it definitely succeeds in that. Every time.
It is a bit rough near the end, but it's only the final 2 or 3 inversions. The rest of the ride is completely fine, and the theming of most of the rides in this park to this day are one of the things that keeps me coming back to Alton Towers every year. Nemesis especially... I love monster movies, so it speaks to me on a personal level.

I've ridden rides like Shambhala and Red Force, and The Smiler is still my favourite. I don't think anything will ever top it for me, just holds a special place in my heart this ride

Great Video earned yourself a new subscriber.

A trick to most rough riding roller coasters is pressure, but you might lose some of the air time. Push your legs up into the bar, restraint, or whatever works on most. Just finding the way to brace yourself, sometimes it is pushing up into shoulder restraint. On stand up roller coasters that most people hate, for bicycle reasons, just a simple push up into the shoulder restraint will take away a lot of the roughness and save your area you sit on.

  • @IndyCoasterCreator
    @IndyCoasterCreator Před 5 lety +2

It seems like a saw-ish theme. So basically You are called to volunteer for something. You accept it and get hypnotised by the smiler. The mesmoriser then does the 6 things it does. Tickle you till you can't stop laughing, Hypnotize you, inject some joy serum in you, Blinds you, and I forgot the other two things it does. (Reply what the other 2 things are if you know) then you are corrected and apparently belong to the smiler. I'm being honest but I feel like a psychopath would wear smiler merch because of how creepy the logo is.

Great review mate. Glad you enjoyed it. I prefer Nemesis and Wicker Man at Alton Towers. And I prefer Stealth, Swarm and Icon elsewhere. So it’s my number 6 for the UK.
However I get why you like it so much, you just don’t seem to get a lot of crazy compact inversion coasters in the USA, whereas Europe is full of them. A bit like me loving launch coasters with loads of air time, because whilst there are plenty in Europe and elsewhere, Icon is the UK’s first attempt. It’s a similar story with twisty airtime woodies in the UK... We need more Icons and Wicker Mans (men, whatever 😂)

Best coaster on the U.K. by far! Never had a ‘rough’ ride on the smiler... think people just think it’s on trend to hate this coaster because of the accident many years ago and a lot of people on the U.K. are still caught up on that. You never mentioned the first inversion straight out of the station which is the main thing that I didn’t expect on my first ride. Brilliant world class coaster.

when i went on the smiler, i had eaten a hotdog around an hour or so before and i wasn’t sick at all and i didn’t feel ill whatsoever. also when it comes up to “the tickler” section of the ride, do not duck your head as it will result in great discomfort. great ride however, i rode it front row very recently, i would not hesitate to ride again and i would recommend it to anyone!

I got on The Smiler 4 times. 3 front rows and one on the back. The back is a little rougher but the only time it's painful is on the 12th inversion.
