Nemesis Review Alton Towers Intense B&M Inverted Roller Coaster

  • Is this the most intense inverted coaster ever built? Due to the local height restrictions and the creativity of Alton Towers, much of Nemesis is built at ground level, or below. It is constantly diving in and out of trenches, making for one of the craziest rides in the world. But is it the best inverted coaster out there? This is my review of Nemesis!

Imagine it’s 1994, no one in Europe knew what an inverted coaster was and no one had the internet back then to spoil what awaited us. As you rode the monorail into the park you were greeted by a strange alien creature, masses of upside down twisted track, rivers of blood, dramatic music and the roar of the trains screaming in and out of the trenches. This is literally one of my most treasured memories of the 90s. Words cannot describe how monumental this ride was to us because we’d never seen anything like it. I agree it’s not the best inverted coaster out there but the front row ride is still brilliant and I still look forward to riding it more than any other ride at Alton towers.

      @Cmcintosh1985 Před 2 lety +9

Completely agree, I remember seeing it for the first time in 1995 via the monorail and initially looking the wrong way until I got my bearings. It was, and still is, this monstrous, compact masterpiece of engineering. It's difficult to describe that feeling as a 10 year old and I've never had it since with any other attraction. Then comes the noise and the music, which are like nothing anywhere else!
To this day I maintain it is still the best designed coaster on the planet. There is literally nothing wrong with it.

100% - the nostalgia factor adds a lot, but we'd never seen a marketing campaign like it. TV ads, merch, a bloody soft drink that they were selling in our high school. We went in 94 and the queueline was something else, up through the woods at the back it seemed to go on forever but it never felt like a 2.5 hour wait. All before the birth of social media. And that theme music...just goes to show, quality over quantity will always win. Hate that it is being sanded, it'll never sound the same again. Going on Saturday to get as many rides as possible out of it!

I have to disagree with you on this one. It's not a long ride but it packs one hell of a punch in such a small space. It has also aged incredibly well considering its about 25 years old. The Smiler however... I rode it when it opened and it was not very smooth then and it's already getting rougher. Plus it gives you a headache after 2 goes. Even though Nemesis is intense, I can marathon it without jarring my shoulder or banging my head.

I could not agree more. My first ride was in 2002, also in the back row. I walked off the ride very confused as it wasn't nearly as intense and mind-blowing as I was lead to believe for so many years. I rode it in the front the next day and had a much better ride due to the incredible visuals. While I do believe the coaster is one of the most overhyped in history, I believe I would have enjoyed it more had I not fallen into that dark pit of hyperbole before that alien grabbed me in its clutches. I also was very impressed with the theming. Most importantly the concrete B&M track. Great video man!

For a coaster that's 25 years old, I still really admire the theming. As much as I like The Smiler's psycho-experiment theme, the whole area of Nemesis feels like this rustic wasteland taken over by this entity that looks like the Thing. It's like each ride tries to tell an in-depth story.

This coaster is a piece of engineering genius. I love how it hugs the ground and seems to get faster and faster without any big drops. That swoop down out of the first corkscrew and up in to the zero G roll is so intense, especially due to the near misses with your feet! The designer really took advantage of the dangling feet inverted design by making it run close to the terrain during elements.

While I've always liked B&M inverts, over time I've realized that there's pretty much no point in riding anywhere in the middle of the train, and the inside seats are even worse. So the majority of riders aren't getting a very good experience. One of my "coaster regrets" is that my one ride on Dueling Dragons was from a middle row, because I couldn't convince the group I was with to wait for the front row.

A lot of enthusiasts still seem to hold on to this opinion, as do Alton Towers themselves. Of course, 25 years later, there are better, more intense coaster experiences out there, possibly even at the same park. That's not to say that Nemesis isn't still special. It's certainly unique and still holds my UK no.1 spot.

JB Cobbs it's when there is another "car" with no seats in front of the front row. For example, what Alpengeist has the front. Usually the larger inverts have them.

I definitely agree with your opinion. Before I went to Alton Towers for the first time, I watched all sorts of different vlogs and reviews, including all Shawn's (ThemeParkWorldwide) vlogs of the park, and he and everyone else I watched hyped up this ride so much, saying it was one of the best rollercoasters in the world, ultra-intense etc. When I went on it for the first time, I was so excited from all the hype that I was quite disappointed once I got off. I mean, it was intense, but it wasn't as outstanding as I thought it was gonna be, but then I rode at the front and I was pretty blown away.

Its my second favourite coater I've ridden after El Toro, but thats possibly a nostalgia thing. It was my first proper coaster back in 96 and the reason i think people still love it is because for 15-20 years nothing in the UK even came close. I rode Montu as well which is stastistically better but Taylor is right that the theming and terrain truly make this one of a kind. And the water used to be red... damn you budget cutbacks...! 😜

I think the reason this ride is so hyped is because of how it used to be. I first rode it in 2009 and it was much more intense then, it was easily my favourite ride in the UK with the blood red river and just an all round better experience. Over the last 10 years it has gotten worse, especially since the paint job a few years back. I don’t think it will ever be as good as it once was again.

The thing about the water. Its non toxic pond dye, I've used in my own pond waterfalls on haloween before. The pools would have all been lined and the water recirculated. Most likely just didn't bother to re dye the water every so often as every time it rains it dilutes it

Whats funny about this is that the first major coaster I rode was this in the front row, and I can't remember what it was like because I was so scared. I came back years later and got a back seat, and like you, I was hyped considering what people say about it, I was dissapointed, but I can still apreciate it for what it is. The reason why it gains so much speed with a not so steep drop has to do with potential energy, which basically works so that the higher you place something, the faster its speed will be when you release it (kinetic energy).

I went on this for the first time scarefest 2018, I was shocked to be honest. It looks HORRIFICALLY intense and rough, but I honestly didn’t think it was that bad! It was my first upside down rollercoaster and people warned me of its intensity and how you feel like jelly when you get off, but I didn’t feel it, not even on the zero G roll. The only thing I really experienced is that I hit my ear piercing on the restraint because I’m so small (JUST above the 1.4m line, I’m 19 btw.. really embarrassing) and when I got off it was dripping blood. Other than that it was INCREDIBLE! My top favourite ride!

Alton towers roller coasters are a textbook example of how working around limitations makes the best art. That incredibly restrictive height limit forces them to get creative with every new coaster they build leading to some of the most inventive and interesting coasters in the world. Smiler, Nemesis, Wicker Man, Galactica... they all came about because of Alton Towers had to deal with the height restriction on the park. Talk about taking a weakness and turning it into a strength.

It's crazy how different of a level B&M were on to Arrow in 1994. Nemesis and Big One opened in the same year. Big One feels like an old ride, it's terribly profiled and only really fun in context of it's importance, but Nemesis rides like a brand new invert, hopefully even more so now

. Good review I've always wondered if this ride was overrated. Not that it isn't good and I've heard that it is quite forceful but I just thought that the ride itself may not be as highly regarded as it is if it wasn't for the theming and how historical it is. I've heard the ride is accelerating for the last part of the ride, which is why it's so intense esp the end helix since you're near full speed. Idk if that's true though
