Thank you for mentioning Memoirs of a Geisha. That soundtrack is so lush, imbued with his signature of whistle-able tunes, but still pay homage to Japanese traditional music. Hard to believe a guy from Flushings Queens wrote that. He used the traditional instruments like the shamisen, daiko, but also the cello and the full orchestra, and it gels incredibly well..
And Schindler's List with the great Itzhak Perlman on the violin. Not since Bach's St Matthew Passion that a violin was used to pierce the heart.
