Harry Situations' Custom Tracker Rockcrawler

- A Chevy Tracker isn't the first vehicle you think of when you picture a rockcrawler, but this one regularly embarrasses Jeeps and Toyotas that cost far more than this Tracker. Crafted by rockcrawling legend Jesse Haines, the goal of the Tracker was to be lightweight and ultra-capable; it is essentially a buggy with a Tracker body at this point. Samco Fabrication did all of the wiring and plumbing and CR Fabrication did the custom sheetmetal interior.

This thing is what every samari, tracker, and jimny driver wishes they had. Awesome rig!
i guess Im asking the wrong place but does someone know of a tool to log back into an instagram account??
I somehow forgot my password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me
@Jairo Gerald instablaster ;)
dude that almost looks effortless in that ride. great job to all hands that created it. A good driver goes a long way as well haha.
.... Super easy, BARELY an inconvenience !!
Imagine having Jesse Haines build your rock crawler, WOW, that is very xool though, I love it, I think it will be in a museum one day😄
Imagine other stuff
Awesome Tracker you’ve got!
Here’s what I have on my 93 Suzuki Samurai 1.6L upgraded everything myself, and I don’t have a shop but love the outdoors off-roading so I build my little Samurai. I currently have 37” tires on and front axle was from an FJ60 9.5” diff 5.29:1 and rear axle from a 1994 FJ80 full float axle for the rear both with lock right locker. The leaf springs comes from an Isuzu Rodeo rear spring for both front and rear extended wheelbase 6” front and rear, 3” body lift, missing link shackles articulate above 14”, Ford shock mount for longer shocks for the front and rear, transmission from a 94 Suzuki Sidekick 4wd cut off transfer case chain and patched with aluminum plate upgrade to 4.24:1 ratio connected to the Samurai 6.5:1 transfer case. Power steering box from a 4runner 2nd generation Toyota high steer and connected to 07 Toyota Prius EPS really smooth turning the 37” tires. Made a custom bumper inner winch 9,500LB winch, onboard air compressor conversion from tracker air condition into air pump. Home made rocks slider and roof racks with LED light great for night run, equip with Midland high frequency long rang radio MTX400 for long distance communication on the trail. Broke other axles before but with current axles from the FJ60 front and FJ80 full float rear it’s bomb proof DANA 60 for now. Crawl ratio should be around 540:1.
Next project will be a tracker similarity to yours, I think you got one of the badass small rig of all time. I know these small light weight rig are truly most capable than Jeep if build it right. I have friends with Jeeps and they punch through the trails with lots of horse power only to suffer breakdown. Hope to meet have see your rig sometime later in the future. Stay safe! Thanks
Loved the tracker build, video, and narration! Was like the class was in session and as the owner of two trackers, this knowledge was like gold! Thanks!
2 trackers? Not enough! Ha ha
Man I love the details in this build! Incredible engineering there!
As an owner of 5 trackers (96, 01, 01, 02, 03) - this is the stuff of legend. Nice tracker!
What year geo would you recommend
@@thomasq8334 honestly you can’t go wrong with any. I like the body style on the 89-98 a tiny bit more, but 99 and after are much more comfortable on the road. Seems to be more off road mods available for 89-98, but I wouldn’t say it’s a huge difference. The later models have more power (unless you get a 99 2 door)
@@thomasq8334 if sticking with first gens - I like 96-98. Get obd2 and the 16 valve motor instead of 8.
Love what you've done to the tracker. Performs well. Great walk around. Enjoy!
Few of my buddy's have trackers they are pretty amazing, caused me to buy my Sammi. You really should do some overlanding videos with smaller vehicles. Great channel 👍
Is it me or does this need more likes and views
For what?
Can't argue with liquid filled crawler tires. Water in your tires.
Awesome build. I'm a Samurai guy I take that thing in places I shouldn't be and the Jeep guy's are blown away. Can't wait for more videos. 😁😁
Way Cool Harry! Hadn't seen your Tracker before. Looks sweet!
I used to watch the rock crawling comps at camp rock, where the King of Hammers is held, this is one of the best crawlers I have ever seen, anyone aside from 100% handmade multi hundred thousand machines
Makes sense, this was built by one of the best buggy fabricators and competition rockcrawlers around!
Thank you. the most important thing I learned from this is the genius idea of getting a 2wd and using a samurai tcase.
That idea was all Jesse Haines!
I just put a Honda S2000 f20c in my samurai. The divorced tcase is wonderful. The gearing completely changed. It’s a beast now 👍
@@bennymiller4254 that sounds awesome!
This thing is amazing. Jesse Haines blows me away with his work! Love the details Harry!
Yeah he is a true artist!
Thats a very sweet little tracker Harry thanks for show and tell
Wow, a very well thought out build. It looks great.
Hugely underrated rig and video. I'm a huuuuge fan of this build, I'm all about the odd ball builds. I was really interested to hear about the running gear set up. My build is a super weird one myself so this is a huge inspiration. Great build brother!
Let's hear more about what you built!
hot damn this video has an amazing editor and sound person. The soundtrack kicks ass
GREAT VIDEO HARRY!!!! I READ ABOUT THE GEO TRACKER BUILD UP IN PETERSENS FOUR WHEEL AND OFF ROAD MAGAZINE!!!! WOW IT IS SO BAD ASS ON VIDEO!!!! TOTALLY AWSOME ENGIREERING AND FABRICATION SKILLS!!! I LOVE IT!!!! GREAT VIDEO!!! GREAT BUILD!!! THANKS FOR SHARING!!!
What a beast! Thank you for a fantastic video👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Sweet ride and awesome video. I look forward to more content like this.
Nice video Harry. Please keep them coming!
super #awesome #content. the build is neat n clean, so much tought process, really is a #legendry #tracker, #bestbuild #rig #ever..
thank you for shooting the video..
this vide needs atleast 10m views from #community.
This is a fascinating build!
What an amazing build!
So sweet
Absolutely amazing rig!
followed your build from Jesse and the lightweight build, sure Jesse wanted you to get the Gen 1 not a gen 2 due to frame width.. love the rig Harry, coming from BC ZUks Canada
what a great build! no nonsense
Awesome video 👍👍
Thanks for the Chevy Tracker/Suzuki Vitara love! I agree with you 100%, nothing wrong with Jeeps, just sometimes you want something a bit different! Even though it comes at a cost with aftermarket support, unfortunately.
This thing is so sick!
Mmm I love the smell of that tire water...(seriously. What's wrong with me?) Awesome build and so capable! Great video!
i had the same vehicle with dual T-cases, married not divorced. Cracked 3 samurai T-cases in half and went with a dana 300 after that. Older now and moved on to diesel cruisers, hard to go back once you switch to diesel :P
Outstanding!
The coolest tracker ever
Such a rad tracker!🔥
At least twice a month for the last 6 years, I've taken a moment to regret ever selling my 95' Tracker. My first car was a 1979 Trans Am (rust bucket) and I didn't even regret selling that as much as my Tracker.
Loved the warnings........and will kill transfer cases....nice toy
I have the 87 Pioneer metric tonne 4 liter 6 Aisen tow pkg trannry trackok dana 44 live up rock crawler trails in the NE washington mountains.waaaay off grid on challenging trail. All 4x4 life up here. Mild mods. 4" lift 33s winch bumper etc. Daily driver all seasons.😅😅
Yeah we want to see more from this channel fo sho....
Great video! More please....
Incredible!
I will never look at the Chebby Tracker the same way, ever again
This thing is so cool!
Very cool Chevi! Hello from Russia!
Great build Harry! I just found your channel. Maybe I'll see you around town sometime.
Awesome build! I don't think my first Jeep build, will reach this caliber. 😂🤣😂👍🏻💪🏼
Awesome
nice little rig
Trackers are awesome
nice
That is Awesome!
I love this thing.
Very nice
i only regret i can give just one thumbs up !
My lotto build right here!
Hey JD :)
@@campbemj180 Hey man! haha
Super cool build although it doesn’t look like there’s much tracker left lol
It still has the original engine and transmission and most of the body.
I love it
Yeah it has
Bad ass!
Sweet! Glad to find this channel and immediately subscribe just from your writing in 4WOR! Followed this build in the mag, great to see in action. Next--> Raymond! Everybody loves Raymond! Stoked to find this channel and get in early! Keep thie sub 20 minute vids and collab w/Fred when possible
Never mind the Raymond request, just found it! Mint Yota next!
@@joehop5780 I sold that truck but Desk to Glory did a video on it prior to that. czcams.com/video/BvFWI_V83C8/video.html
I just found a 2003 in pretty mint condition 4 door v6 this is what I want to do and trailer it way better than owning a side by side I own my dads samurai tin top its all stock no rust low miles I thought about doing the samurai but probably not
I have a Jimny and I never realised how much of a penalty weight is. I use 50% less fuel on than my old Toyota on the same trail by just not carrying 800kg of extra steel.
That thing is bad ass!!!
I can see rear steer in the future? That’s be sweet...it’s the only thing left to do lol and an atlas...
Jeezus chrize....... What sucks is that the fab work on this thing for the layman would cost as much as a really nice new truck or probably more.
The whole truck is awesome but those door panels especially.
John Connor built the dash? You put it out on the internet? The T1000 is enroute to his location....Damnit.
Mantul
🤩
Enjoyed your rig look-around. I'm also in Reno area. I'm building an Overlander (S10 ZR2), & need some fab work (mostly welding). Got tips?
Nate’s Precision and Silver State Off Road are my two go-to shops in Reno. 👍
Just need cameras on it for break over angle.
Where can I find rock sliders for my 2001 Chevy Tracker LT 4WD? I search everywhere and only see them listed for Geos and Vitaras. I see the Vitaras are pretty similar vehicles but I don’t know for sure if the sliders will fit.
Not certain Adam. Trail Tough makes them for the previous generation, perhaps they could be modified to fit your Tracker.
I've been trying to figure out how to put spidertrax brakes on my Toyota axle to decide if I want to buy them. Did you or someone else write an article on the axle build that explains how the brakes are mounted?
Sorry Alex we didn't cover that in great detail. The rear was pretty easy because it is semi float, we just put the rotor and hat over the axle shaft and Jesse Haines built caliper mounts for the Wilwood calipers. In the front I am using FJ80 components, Jesse had to do a little machine work on the hubs but bolted the brake hat BEHIND the hub and then again built custom caliper brackets.
@@HarrySituations thanks for responding. Didn't expect FJ80 front brake parts, but I was wondering if the hubs had to be machined. That seems to be a common thing on disc brake upgrades for these axles. Sadly I don't have access to the tools to make custom brackets anymore, but I'm sure I can find someone to help out when I need it
WALK AROUND WITH RAYMOND 🤯🤯🤯
Glad I found this! What does it weigh Harry?
Trail Mobile it is 2900 pounds with the spare tire and five gallons of fuel but without passengers or gear. For comparison my LJ and my Toyota both weigh close to 4400 pounds.
@@HarrySituations Wow.My samurai on 40s is 3220.My other one on 33s is 2550 with a hard top and full doors.
Nice rig.... wish I could buy a trophy......
I know is was done by professional, but about what did it cost. I love this truck.
I probably have about $30k in parts in it. They add up quick! Luckily I got a deal on the labor.
I love it. How much would doing something like this cost?
The parts are about $25k (just the tires and wheels cost $5k alone) but nothing is bolt on so if you are paying for labor you can easily spend another $25k unless you are building it yourself.
@@HarrySituations awesome build, thanks for the reply
Please sell me the soft top trim molding lol they are expensive and I cant seem to find them in scrapyards where I'm living😭 Love the build by the way!!
I paid through the nose for it from Trail Tough. But there were the only ones who had it.
Do you have a walk around video on the Stepside Square body in the background?
This truck?

@@HarrySituations No the gray one @ 0:50.
@@Kyle-ev4fk no idea who that belongs to.
Are you guys looking for a shop hand?! I live in Reno, and would like to get involved.
With Petersen’s 4-Wheel & Off-Road out of print I’m doing a lot less wrenching these days Jeff but I’ll let you know the next time I hit the trail.
This thing been white. Sheetz. I would have named it Kracker. Wish mine was white haha. I stick with red it is my favorite color.
How much did the roll cage run you ?
It is not a very easy question to answer because Jesse Haines built the cage at the same time that he did the suspension and rebuilt the frame rails. I would expect a similar custom cage to cost around $2000 though based on my experience.
are those tracker differentials?
No they are Toyota-based axles with Diamond housings, Toyota electric lockers, and Spidertrax brakes.
Can someone explain what kind of suspension is that? Beacause i see no springs there
The shocks are designed so that they support the weight of the vehicle and also damp the movement, similar to what a monster truck uses.

@@HarrySituations ooo. I see. Thank you
Cool Tracker. How much does it weigh?
It is 2900 pounds.
So what did it windup weighing
It weighs 2900 pounds with 5 gallons of fuel in it.
Whats the wheelbase compared to the stock tracker?
Stock was 87” and now it is 103”. The front axle was moved forward 7” and the rear axle was moved back 9”.
@@HarrySituations Thanks!
Ball park guess at what kind of money it takes to have a rig like this?
It really depends on if you are doing the labor yourself. Figure $25k in parts but that number could double if you are paying shop rates for labor.
Get a midnight metalworks transfer case
What does it weigh in at?
2900 pounds
スパイダートラックスいいなー
It is a Suzuki, what do you expect?
little moab utah
That thing is sausy
nice build! Now show us a video where their is no talking and some action! Ya know what it’s capable of
Everyone - "why not just buy a jeep?" Reason why I don't own one!
Nice man is automatic
No it has a manual transmission. I prefer them on the trail.
Nice job
Title Should be , how to turn Geo tracker into a capable yj jeep. 😂
I mean you could start with anything and apply the same principles, but I haven’t seen any Jeeps (YJs or otherwise) that the Tracker couldn’t easily keep up with.
YJs are leaf spring setups. Relatively crap in terms of suspension articulation compared to link/spring configurations. I have a 96 YJ and a 99 TJ. There's really no comparison.
