  • “If you had told me when I was 16 years old that someone would throw me the keys to their works Lightweight Le Mans Jaguar C-Type, I would have told you that you were absolutely crazy…but that’s exactly what happened,” says David Swig, an RM Sotheby’s car specialist.
    This 1953 Jaguar C-Type Works finished fourth overall at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1953, and is the second of only three “Works Lightweight” cars built by Jaguar.
    To be offered by RM Sotheby’s at the company’s Monterey sale in August, Swig recently had the opportunity to take the car out to gather some on-road driving impressions.
    “No less than five Le Mans-winning drivers of this period have sat behind the wheel of this car,” Swig says, “which almost give you goosebumps.”
    “What I love about these cars is how communicative they are on the road,” he says. “How when you’re going through a corner, you feel in the seat of your pants and through the steering wheel every little movement, every little pebble that you drive over.”
    “The exhaust note is one that makes you just want to rev it and rev it,” he says.
    This car is very much a piece of history, and even though it featured groundbreaking technology like four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes and lightweight aluminum bodywork, it’s still a usable, drivable classic even today.

    ...gave me goosebumps and it's 40°C today. I rebuilt a '54 XK120 in 1963, body off, complete engine rebuild and so on. I was 18 years old. Jaguar has been in my blood ever since (I'm now 70+). These videos are priceless. Thank you so much.

    I love how the older cars give you so much information as you drive them. Manufacturers are now taking away that information by making everything digital and or drive by wire, brake by wire and, steer by wire. What a pity the newer generation will never experience what that feels like.

      Couldn't agree more. Dumped a teardrop 300ZX in favor of a new Camaro RS years ago. The Nissan was a techno-marvel at the time but NO fun to drive. The Chevy is (still) a 200-horsepower go-cart with =road sense=.

    David Swig makes no mention of the man who designed a new body for the 120 to make the C type, Malcom Sayor. His gorgeous new body work was worth an extra 25 mph at Le Mans with the same drive-train. Sayor famously went on to design the D, E & XJS.

    I loved the shape of the "C" type so much; in 1993 I started tooling up a body to make a "Kit Car" version of this lovely automobile.
    I got cold feet when there didn't seem to be much interest from buyers; everyone wanted a Cobra replica at the time.

    • @Kolinu2
      @Kolinu2 Před 9 lety +5

      Mr. Johnson The good news is other people have taken all the risk and there are some excellent replicas to be bought these days. With only 53 original 'C' types being made, the high-end replicas are expensive but they are real quality and a lot less money than buying an original. :)

    Had a friend, Pappy Syler who drove his C-type to races, unloaded his spares and jack, raced it, then drove it home to dinner returning for Sunday's races. Nelson Ledges Race Course near Warren, Ohio in the late 1960's was the scene of Pappy's green C-Thpe's success. Pappy was still doing track days at Nelson, in a Mitsubshi EVO at age 87 a few years ago. My Hero!

One ex Ecurie Ecosse with D type modifications finished in BRG with Webers + weather equipment at £965 also other C Type in Italian red at £845. What prices !! Following "WittyDroog's" comments, I also sold some really nice automobiles a few years ago, starting my sales experience in a Ferrari dealership. Just because I wasn't able to own such a car didn't diminish the fact that I studied and followed European racing while I attended school in Germany through the early '60s, thanks to my fathers German assignment in the US Army. When the opportunity arrived to work in the midst of some phenomenal automotive artwork and actually have someone toss the keys to me to get acquainted with the product I was to sell, I was nearly overwhelmed!! Just the fact that the commentator doesn't happen to be the owner, doesn't necessarily diminish his (or her) appreciation of the privilege of driving this car! I may not have had the financial investment in the vehicle, but I most certainly had the appreciation and the emotional investment in a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience the likes of Ferrari 330LMB, a Ferrari BB512 or a Ferrari 512TR or even the more common 308s and 348s. An average car enthusiast such as I doesn't get that kind of opportunity where I came from...
