I’m so glad Tesla is finally putting out videos showing the work that goes into their products. Honestly, we used to build stuff in America until outsourcing became a thing. I love how they integrated the motor vertically instead of horizontally, it is usual that the axis of the motor is the axis of rotation of the joint, but in this case the motor goes vertical to transform the movement from rotary to linear with a gearbox , similar to a muscle, in the university it is usual that almost everyone does it the other way, it really did not occur to any of us in my class at the university and neither did any professor. Really smart.

    Four key points...
1.The video is created to give the talented candidate a walk through as though the team members were describing their frontier work to you alone.
    2. Vertical design means system specs drive the design of the bespoke subsystems. In contrast, other robot teams build from a catalog of available components. Tesla engineers design and build everything exactly as required by the system - with manufacturing at scale always a constraint.
    3. Why are the actuators and not the sensors highlighted? Because the sensors simply feed raw data to the computers, whose design is done by software engineers - shared with the vehicle team. What Tesla is recruiting for here are English-speaking hardware engineers - the best in the world.
    4. Why are only the small parts shown? Because that's how top down specifications lead to bottom up realization. Hardware engineers solve the whole system in very small steps and solutions.

    • @cogoid

One spring constant is not optimal in all situations. When actuator bandwidth allows it, it is often better to implement compliance via feedback. Then it can be dialed up and down as necessary. For example, Boston Dynamics's Atlas robot uses very stiff hydraulic actuators -- but it is still capable of force feedback via rapidly controlling joint positions based on the sensed forces.

They're obviously needs to be a smaller FSD computer I guess you could just chop it in half It have them both connected by fiber optics and put the two parts where it be most practical and so they take up less space so you can focus on articulation with the shoulders and torso or you can mount the computer sideways, I see you have multiple prototypes too so obviously progress is being made great work! All it is it's just having two smaller FSD computers with just one CPU that's half the size communicating to another one at very high speeds that's also half the size In a way that would make it a full FSD computer except for that they're smaller and you can orientate them differently to save space for other things like more actuators more skeletal structure or batteries or whatever the heck you want!
