- We're playing Tanks today from Gale Force Nine, joined by our friend and the games master himself Phil Yates.
John's a little outnumbered this time around facing off two shermans but this game shapes up to be an epic battle across the field. Tanks is a fun game that can be picked up and played easily like an old coin arcade game with simple rules and great historical reference for those who want a little more story to their games.

Awesome battle report! What a close run affair! Looks light, easy & FUN! Definitely gonna have to buy this one!
Picked this up about a month ago, and now I think I will bust it out and give it a go!
I loved the battle report, especially how streamlined the rules are - and the jokes. ;)
BTW...I also have to say that the beasts are the best gaming channel on youtube(my opinion), you guys are awesome!
It is a great game and superb value. You can also play larger games with more tanks
Addicted to this game! Just got my leopard 2 yesterday hehe.
I've just bought this game. I didn't realize the time commitment to assemble the tanks. 45 minutes and my first Sherman is assembled. I hope to give the game a go next week!

Enjoy a fast pace game that still rewards a mind for tactics. Is avoiding fire affecting criticals, (and possibly being able to repair them before they ever affected you,) the extent of initiative advantage on firing I wonder. With more tanks on the map I'd be inclined to defer my high initiative firing tanks to plan all their shots after I saw what was going to survive.
at 25:35 Mr. Yates states that the entire vehicle has to be seen for line of site ... but the example his rule book on page 9 shows line of site when part of the vehicle is blocked ... therefore, I am confused.
great game....have been playing for a couple of months...4 games in one afternoon...good hunting...
Just got the starter box yesterday for this one, really love how much value you get in the box set! Got it as a quick game to play when you don't have time for a full game of Bolt Action or the sort and it looks like it'll be well suited!

Tanks is a brilliant game , it's good for people starting wargaming as well.
I love this game and I am playing the heck out of it right now and have several friends playing as well. I do have to say that when tanks with the assault gun have a low initiative like the stug G it makes them almost worthless because other players simply get out of the way because their initiative is higher and they move after. So I think it would be a little better to have a shooting template for assault guns that would represent the assault gun ability to move its gun side to side as in real life, thus giving a bit better opportunities for these types of tanks.
Daniel Paul assault guns do actually have a 180 degree firing angle, look on the website for more info.
Remember; in New Zealand, piece comes from the deck.

Phil mentioned playing a larger game using the crew upgrade cards. Was this done as I can't find it on CZcams?
Firstly, the positives: Before playing my first game of 'Tanks', I, like some commenters already, thought that this game was poorly thought out, but, having played it, several times, with a broad cross section of opponents in age and experience, it definitely works! I have received nothing but positive feedback from those I have played it with, including four of them who are now going to buy the game! (P.S., none of them like FoW, though!). Another is not only going to buy it to play with his 10yo son, but is a senior school teacher (11-18 yos) and intends to use it as a basic tactics learning tool. Yet another player, had never previously played a miniatures table top game, (mostly into games consoles and minecraft), he wants to get into the game too! So, in response to those 'elitist' gamer types who readily 'pooh-pooh' the game, think on, the hobby is not just about what you like! The game balance also, so far, has worked out well, where 'crappy' dice rolls (or fantastic rolls), are easily explained with logical narrative reasoning, yet another strength I feel. Now the negatives: it is a shame and implies poor preparation, that one of the rules' co writers made so many mistakes during this report. Playing into the hands of the 'negative brigade'! Earlier in the year, post release of the game, availability of the game and expansions was poor, but, this may be from an underestimation of it's popularity and success? A good 'GAME', note the emphasis on game and not a WW2 tank battle simulation, a very important distinction here! I, like many others, look forward to more expansions and scenarios for this enjoyable and fun game.

Tbh if you're going to move away from the variable quality Battlefront fare I'd go 1:72, that way it's cheaper, ooks better and you won't need a ten foot table.
I just bought the game. Are the tanks in this game the same size as Open Fire and Achtung? My friend has these and wants to know.

I just learned of this game after entering a tank creation contest at my local miniatures shop here in FL. I saw the tanks and was very much interested in entering the contest and decided to look the game up further. After watching this video I must say the game looks HIGHLY entertaining and could be played at a family game night, which happens far less thanks to my hectic schedule of overnight work. I LOVE WWII tanks and vehicles and as a "tank nut" will most definitely be buy the expansion packs for the main game! Now the questions I do have is can more then just 2 people play? Are there any rules for platoons? Is artillery an option in this game? Is there any structures or game maps for this game? I would LOVE to know more about it!
Fairly easy to incorporate multiple players, in the starter set you could have one player using the panther and two players with a Sherman each. Then as you expand the game more you could incorporate more people if you wanted. The points values keeps it relatively fair even if they’re outnumbered. No artillery but there are a few Self propelled guns that can arch their fire over things. And as far as maps you make them yourself, you can arrange the playing field anyway you like, that’s what the cardboard cutouts in this box are for, but you can also use 3d terrain (forests, hills, buildings, roads etc) for a nicer looking battlefield.

Does phil have the rules right here? He seems to use defence dice different to rulebook. In rulebook says defence role of 4 or 5 attacker chooses which attack dice to cancel. A six allows a defender to choose which to cancel. Also when he refers to attack gun line of sight also seems to contradict rule book. At 31:51 he states the turret damaged panther can only shoot directly in front. In rulebook it allows an assault gun to shoot at any tank in front, the direct in front rule only applies when part of the target is behind the attackers front.
Why did Justin lose the tank ability to lower the Panther dice rolls by one die halfway through the video? Also, there is no such thing as “one dice.”

I love this game and we play it every week but where is the most iconic Tank of WW2 ?The Tiger ? you can use Michael Wittmann as an commander... He's a Tiger Ace. Ok in his early years he was commander of a STUG but alter he commands a Tiger. So I and my Friends build our own card to use a Tiger 1e. sorry for my englisch,im german.
Hopefully the Tiger will be an option soon enough, though it looks like we're getting a few tank destroyers before that happens.

Yes, it looks like the Assault Gun rule is misplayed, also doesn't the entire (not just part of it) shooting tank need to be behind the front line of the defender to gain a side shot. Also shouldn't repaired critical damage cards be shuffled back into the deck. Cancelling dice seems OK so far, but I am only 34 mins in.
Cool models but the rules....are terrible with games running much longer than they should
I dunno, seems like it's pretty streamlined to me, no bogging down, no morale checks, no bailing out, seems a lot more reasonable than FOW.
meh , it is what it is . a fun pick up and play game . I've played a few games and honestly don't like it
I've really been enjoying the game so far, but I'll agree with the running time. I have yet to have a match finish within 30 minutes.
The movement rules in this game are a joke
