One point that I see everywhere while describing ENFPs is that we don't like being tied down. That's true about experiences but definitely not with people. In fact, quite the opposite. When it comes to people we have a tendency to be somewhat obsessed with people that we love. We become easily and deeply attached to people. To say that we don't commit in relationships is a disservice to all ENFPs everywhere.

I know this is old but I need to say something about ENFPs. We love to connect on a deep emotional level and that can be draining if we are constantly doing that with new people. We have our people who are always there and in my experience it's a small group of people not family. I hope I explained that clearly.

I think things like attachment with relationships are very personal, and probably more of a result of your personal experiences as opposed to how your mind works... Cognitive functions on the other hand I think are more personality based.

I am an ENFP, and I gotta say, I never have heard such an accurate description of my personality. The part that was most astounding was the part describing my thought processes. I debate with friends about freedom quite a bit, and I have an extremely difficult time piecing thoughts and sentences together because my mind starts to race at a rate that makes it almost impossible for me to grasp one point or idea and voice it. It is super frustrating. It is nice to hear that is is typical.

@GeorgeK1410: Although it is typical, being conscious of the trait allows for personal growth to exist (i.e. personal responsibility is not excluded).
The related feature that an ENFP can choose to improve upon is fair-judgement (i.e. growing the extraverted thinking Te function to balance value-based Fi).
When practicing the Te cognitive function, errors are also typical and so a growth-oriented ENFP would accept objective criticizm from Te dominant people and Fe helpers (e.g. ESTJ, ESFJ).

George!!! Exactly.. I found a way to help with this. 1)Journaling this will take bit of muscle building practice but as you get more into the practice of doing it can really be a great treasure and friend to us - it’s why we make such good writers.
      2) recording your conversation. This is my most favourite. Literally go for a walk and record what’s comes off the top. Especially when you feel like you need to vent/spill/understand your thoughts or emotions. You will find profound ideas and also with time it will serve you as you will be able to organise your insights while they are “hot” so to speak and make sense of the genius that arrives :)

ENFPs are my favorite type. I find myself connecting with them easily. I tend to be drawn to them in friendships and relationships. I'm an INFJ and there is a natural flow with these two types. The ENFP I was with for 7 years wrote incredible poetry! He wouldn't show it to many people though. Me and him are very attached! We aren't together right now but we are still as close as ever. As an introvert, and a very private one,'I love being able to spend hours with him and he likes the company as well. He knows me more than anyone else on earth and I know him more than anyone as well. We can be a power positive team or a negative team. Thank you for the eloquent description! Great video!!!

This is an explanation like no other. I really value this video. Thanks a lot, man.
Usually people just discuss the child like wonder because that's the surface of it but the deep introverted feeling and principles that lie within is what I feel mostly oriented around. Because when I'm alone, I'm not looking at my extroverted behavior. I'm looking at my inner thought and feelings. The fact that I hold my principles so dear to me is a blessing in that it's accompanied by quick thinking and a spur of speech. This allows me to just spill my heart right out my mouth. It's what I call "puking my heart out".
If it wasn't for this ability, my thoughts and feelings would be stuck contained inside of me. And nobody would be able to connect with me in the way I want them to. And that's my worst nightmare.

(ENFP) Not exactly... This "ability" is not absolute.
INFJs express feelings affected by thoughts. We express thoughts affected by feelings.
So, we both have a superb way of deeper expression, but we complete each other's functioning. We don't usually do both same intensively or in the same time.

When I was in elementary school, I had to take speech classes because my mind would hop from idea to idea so fast I'd forget what I was saying. I often said "Um" and "Uhhhh...." while I tried to remember what I was going to say, and it became hard for people to understand me. I would be telling a story and by the time I said my second sentence, my mind would be at the very end. Great video! Such explanation, much wow.

I somewhat agree to what you're saying, but I can also see what Mr. Pierce means. While I most definitely need my alone time, I can also become very scared of my own mind, as it tends to overthink and drift into deep dark thoughts. This drives my art but it also tears my soul apart. I don't know if this is just me, or all ENFPs, but as depicted in the video, I have an intense fear of being alone.

But amongst people I love and trust, I feel like a 100% ENFP who is quick witted, loves to make people laugh, loves travelling and just drowning in sights, sounds and cultures - with a friendly tinge of occasional sarcasm!
This duality amazes me because I've never thought about this two sides of me so articulately, until I watched your INFP and ENFP videos. Are there anyone else here who can relate to this INFP/ENFP duality?

It's not that i do that on purpose, it just happens. But when i'm around people i feel comfortable with i'm almost the loudest one haha. I think this maybe is because the ENFP is the most introverted out of all the extraverted types?

Wow, this is SO true! I'm an ENFP and so is my co-author and your description of how ENFPs write is spot on for us. We put our readers through so many emotions and throw all kinds of misfortunes upon characters that we (and they) love while at the same time building to a happy ending that will leave everyone satisfied. Possibly the best example of it was the 4th story in our series in which the main couple fights so much they contemplate divorce and end up upsetting their son so much he runs away, only to be sold into slavery. Once there, the boy meets an elderly man who is his fellow slave and strikes up a close friendship and by having the father go to get him and the mother stay home with the daughter, the parents get the time alone to figure out their issues. In the end, the father buys the boy's friend and takes him home where their friendship continues through the next stories. The parents make up and their relationship is strengthened, leaving everyone with a happy ending. It was such a grim story, a lot of people gave up reading it before the happy ending came about but the ones who stayed expressed their surprise that we were able to deliver such a happy yet realistic ending to a story that depressing. Now that I see this video, I realized that there's a combination of the darkness of reality and the optimism of the ENFP guiding the story. This video sheds light on a lot of lesser known aspects to my type and I wish I could discuss it further with someone because this is really interesting!

People say I can be smothering at times because of my need to be around others or at least talk to someone. My gf is an intj and we compliment eachother in many ways but we still have ussues. She can seem cold and uncaring at times and I tend to be very annoying with my talking. But my point is its never set in stone and there are always exceptions to the rules. The dream world, the deep love of individual friendships, the deep side sensitive to pain and how to fix it, wallowing if it cannot, trying again and again anyway. Pleased you mentioned Anne Frank. Her diary reads of that childlike hope, punctuated with the reality of her dire situation. I know many view us ENFPs as chaotic good / neutral types, possibly "annoying," but we drive things forward. Sure -- the test is never supposed to be about specific behavior but about cognition. What's most important is how you process information, the mechanisms by which you decide upon behavior. That being said, of course certain behaviors will crop up more often for certain types in a certain society or environment, but that's just a statistical correlation, not a causation. In any case, most ENFPs that I've come to know over the years do in fact act rather like you described and even describe their perceived "introvertedness" in a similar way. Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm guessing you stumbled over your words trying to get all the ideas out in this message, getting frustrated by restrictions of grammar that prevent your writing from keeping up with your mind running on ahead...? Either way, ENFPs are just as likely as any type to show stereotypical introverted behavior, but in the mind the processes are, in a strict Jungian sense, extroverted (focused on the object). I hope that helps?

Michael Pierce: your insights here and in the other videos of yours I've seen are phenomenal. Your substantial, unique, and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny (in your wry phrasing and in the image juxtapositions you choose) contributions to MBTI understanding are the most intelligent I've come across in any one place online. Well done!
I'm so glad to have found your channel.
I appreciate that you've got at something here inherent to the ENFP experience that is seldom publicized: our (yes!) disillusioned and strangely melancholic sides that usually only intimates glimpse now and then, since we tend to retreat from others when in their grip. (An effect of auxiliary Fi, I suppose.) What the world sees the most is our effervescent clowniness, but we're an odd mix of silly, emotionally intense, and serious, actually. These seemingly irreconcilable aspects are real, and I expect I'm far from the only ENFP who was puzzled about this disparate mix of influences in my character before I discovered the MBTI.

Wow...thank you michael for this video. I discovered about 6 months ago the MBTI and my personality type (ENFP). Since then, I have been--perhaps unsurprisingly-- voraciously searching the internet and CZcams to learn more about my personality type. Your video has truly gotten to the core of who I am. You have eloquently illuminated the various shades of my personality through your thoughtful descriptions. The pictures that accompany your voiceover, particularly the section on Fi, are beautiful manifestations of my oftentimes rich inner world.
For many years, I have always felt "different", "misunderstood", and "quirky", because so few of the people I interacted with were intuitive types--most were sensing types. I knew who I was, but was unable to articulate adequately these internal sentiments. Although I have learned much about myself and seen quite a few videos about ENFP's, your video, by far, has been the most accurate and enlightening. Please keep making more videos!

I'm an INFJ and while I can relate to the INFJ video you posted completely, I can't help but notice some relatable aspects in this video- particularly the need to a retain a childlike wonder to the world and it's possibilities, and finding a lot of pleasure in seeing the individualities in people and nuances of metaphoric color in the world. I also have a vivid imagination and enjoy making up stories very much. While I spend most of my being in that underwater contemplative state and using introverted intuition- typical of the INFJ poster child, sometimes I feel the need to swim up to the surface almost to take a break of fresh air and just act spontaneous and goofy if u may- almost to amuse myself and get away from the weightiness underneath. I was wondering if you could offer a brief explanation to this phenomenon.

The intense dichotomy that lives within us as ENFP's are beautifully described here in this video, for us to go deep into the wells of human depravity is something we do willingly, in our quest to completely understand an individual and not lump them under a construct, but we know that we must surface, and that the every storm must run out of rain, and that there is a new day, and a new dawn of promise.

Awesome! Can't believe I haven't seen this post until now. Imagine a room with a 60 foot screen on it flashing images like a slide projector moving really really fast. Now add 4-5 characters that are having different conversations with you in the same room. Now you understand what is going on in an ENFP's mind most of the time. Sometimes the characters are quieter or asleep and sometimes the images are flashing slower, but if we are excited about something or someone, the room is going to be going at full speed. Now while you have this going on in your mind, try to describe one image that appeared on the screen with someone in the real world. Almost immediately after you begin, the image changes to something else and the image you were describing to someone is no longer in your memory. So you try to describe the next image but you must speak quickly or you will forget what it was before you can describe it. That is why we speak the way we do. It has to come out like water. If you hear an ENFP talking in a room with no one there, it is likely that they have to say it out loud just to think because their mind is too noisy. I can't even sleep in a room that isn't pitch black because I can't turn off my mind. We love to be with our friends but we ghost them for no reason and feel guilty later. We don't fear being alone as much as having no significance. I can be alone and I LOVE being an ENFP, but what I really want is someone to accept me the way I am without judgement. I want to be special to at least one person, so that if I drop in front of someone, they don't step over me and keep going, like I never mattered at all.

I was really dark and didn’t like people for a while. He’s back in after another month or so, but I’m going to push through. The idea that we get the fact that we’re all eventually going to die and the pessimistic idea is what’s made me as optimistic as I am now.
