      Great video as always, Evan and crew!
      Just one thing. The Catholic Church was pretty opposed to the Malleus Maleficarum from the get go. The author forged a lot of documentation, so it may get confused in earlier sources, but most historians agree that it was widely panned by the Church's establishment due to its opposition to witch hunting, as well as due to its methods being found ineffective and immoral.
      However, it was pretty accepted by secular rulers, probably, as you said, for political and personal purposes. In a place as isolated as Vaduz, it's pretty easy to see how ruthless rulers could exploit its lies for their own benefit.

    • @Sewblon
      @Sewblon Před 4 lety +39

      Philip the IV could only get away with that because he had the Pope under his control, and had the Florentine bankers to replace the Templars as his main source of financing. If a normal count had tried that, then he would have been left without any source of credit afterwards, and that is the best case scenario. The worst case scenario is that your creditors have someone higher up the food chain, like the emperor or the pope, save them, then have you killed.

Lichtenstein was one of the first micronations I had the curiosity of finding and exploring on the map. Yet I literally had no idea of the history behind this micronation until I watched this video today. Now I know Liechtenstein was created out of a medieval purge led by a witch-hunting campaign that scarred thousands of people.

    You have chosen not only a beautiful place, but a place with clean streets. That is a town after my own heart. And thanks for the story. I had no idea that motives were so clear. How did the people not figure that out? Geez. Historians often insist that religion is rarely the reason, but it works well as a means to an end.

    It would be interesting to check the sources for this video, specially regarding the amount of executions. Losing a tenth of a population has demographic, economic, even artistic consequences that can't be hidden, like the plague left deep scars on European society.
    In a similar case, some authors have taken one sample if the executions under the Spanish Inquisition, projected them statistically (as if the Inquisition were a factory of executions with a growing quota to fill and not a court of law) and came up with numbers of massive genocide, while a long, hard look at the historical files brings way lesser ciphers. And plenty of acquittals, or people condemned to other punishments than death.
    Also, at least giving the names of the characters in the description would make the research easier for those ones who want to factcheck.

Despite the lady telling him "don't put your hand in the stamp drawers", he put his hands in the stamp drawer, and got stuck. (yes, he got into trouble, but from us, not the lady. Some still do. They lived through the Witch Trials there. One of my ancestors was called for jury duty for the trials. Not believing in witches or in punishing people for witchcraft, he skipped town and went down to Plymouth Colony and is now known by his nickname "Witchcraft Mark".
