  • Voters in Iran have chosen a new president. Former health minister Masoud Pezeshkian received well over 2 million votes more than his hardline rival in Friday's runoff. He was the only reform candidate allowed to run -- but his ability to deliver change in the shadow of Iran's Supreme Leader is limited.

Best of luck - Iran has always been a sad story for me, a European, because it's culturally and geographically such an interesting country, and you'd want them to be more of a part of the world you live in, it's like a transition to Asia, a missing link in some ways. Europe would be culturally enriched with a better relationship with Iran.

Don't listen to dumb people who know nothing about Iran. Any observer of Iran over the last 20 years will see the policies of Iran have changed with different presidents. For instance, Ahmedinejad was a hawk who almost instigated war with Israel while Rouhani was a reformer who negotiated the nuclear deal (JPOA). Raisi was a hardliner who refused to offer concessions to rejoin the nuclear deal. This new guy (Masoud) is promising to renegotiate the deal. Domestically, there have been different policies under different presidents.
The Supreme Leader is a pragmatist. He does not overrule the Iranian president or parliament because they represent the will of the people. He knows that if he pisses the people off, there could be a revolution which will overthrow him and his ilk.
The Iranian president has plenty of wiggle-room to create reforms which can bring about positive change in the lives of Iranians. The biggest challenge to Masoud will not come from the Iranian Supreme Leader, it will come from the results of the US elections.

Yalda Zarbakhch, Head of DW Persian Service is a prime example on why West basically fails at understanding IRAN and its people, they fail by employing people like Zarbakhch as heads and consultants, who have absolutely no idea what is going on in IRAN, such people are often have been so far away from Iran for such long times that they are no longer Iranian and can not follow the emotions and wit of people in Iran. For example, she clearly misses to understand that people happily voted for Pezeshkian, two times in a row even to emphasize their selection, Percentage of the people voting increased in the 2nd time voting for Pezeshkian and these are all beside the very well managed process of election that happened within 50 days of President Raisi's death, considering that in many western countries the overall turnout is often less than 50% too. Unfortunately DW is a biased news network as long as it employees people like Zarbakhch in its persian service, nothing is gonna change, west never understands iran and iranians, they will be always lacking behind in their planning and analysis.

Not that I have any hope for this but Gorbachev and Khrushchev were also barely reformists within their system but did enact quite a bit of change. They just bided their time til they could establish their power bases to enact major change within the system, even if they actually believed in the system. LBJ in the US democratic party as well. He was a Southern democrat but totally betrayed them and broke their power once he had his own separate power base. Medvedev tried to be that for Russia but totally failed.

It’s not about total power or having a dynasty. The presidents and their underlings decide upon infrastructure developments. Although human rights might change insignificantly, new facilities dedicated to resource accumulation and energy can help the population. Any increases in efficiency within food production also help the affordability of essential goods. Of course, the lion’s share of the capital will remain at the top (everywhere), however, incremental improvements are possible under this new president. His opponent probably would have spent all his efforts building new luxury facilities for the clerics in Qom
