    I bought my 2011 f150 ecoboost 5 years ago with 80,000 miles on it and it now has 438,000 miles on the odometer and I can wholeheartedly say it’s been a pleasure to own. The only expensive problem I’ve had was the wire harness inside the transmission went bad at 380,000 miles and it cost me $1500. I had 1 water pump, 2 4WD shift motors and the purge valve, and the rear door wire harness broke. I think all together it’s been approximately $2500 total repairs. Not too damned bad for 340,000 miles of traveling. I grossed over $400,000 with it so it doesn’t owe me a thing. I’ll buy another when it blows up.

I always used synthetic oil and considered it my forever truck. Well, my truck was murdered by a tree limb in my driveway, so I am forced to purchase a new vehicle. I tow a 22 ft center console (4100 lbs. loaded), spring summer and fall. I am thinking I will stick with the 3.5 because it has always, delivered the umph I need to get the boat on the highway. It’s not a internet myth or even just a few people. If you have a Gen 2 3.5 you are almost guaranteed to have cam phaser failure before 100k.
    The Gen 1 was hit or miss with the timing chains but Gen 2 will have the phaser failure. At least pre 2021 models. The phasers have since been redesigned. Time will tell.
    Despite the similarities in Timing design the coyote is definitely the more reliable long term choice. The company I work for has had over 100 Gen 1 3.5 trucks and over 80 Gen 2 3.5 trucks. Almost all of the Gen 2s have had to get phasers. We have slowly started trading them off for 5.0s.

    Good review. I bought my 17 Limited with 41k miles. It had the start up tick. Had Ford do the reflash and still had the noise. Changed the oil to full synthetic. Sound went away and I’m now at 45k miles. I also run premium for many reasons, better knock resistance, more retard timing which means less boost down low. Which also equals less heat. Especially when towing. Overall this is a great engine. I’m really happy with it. I plan on getting mine tuned eventually. Extra 80whp and 100+ wheel torque sounds fun to me. Even though the truck is plenty fast for being what it is. I could have gotten a F250 for what I paid for the Limited but the F150 pulls everything I need it too and it’s a lot more enjoyable to daily than a F250.

    @jsnokhous Před 3 lety +2

    I agree with most of what you said in this one. I commented on the last video challenging the idea that the 3.5 is the most reliable and I stand my that. The 3.5 is a good engine I guess but I bought mine new. It was a ordered truck. Break in oil change at 1000 miles, every 5000 or less thereafter with mobile 1 5w30, motorcraft filter, babied it until the oil temp was at operating temp, shell 93 only.. Basically it was treated as good as it could be. But at 12k miles the phasers started to go out. It was a raptor and it’s a well known issue with them. Maybe the non HO version is better?
    Now I’m in a 5.0. They’ve had their issues as well. Timing chains and oil consumption are what I’ve seen owners report. I know Ford did an ecu update to address the oil consumption. Most owner feedback I’ve seen says it did fix it. We’ll see. Mine only has 300 miles so can’t say personally. No concerns yet.
    My motor choice came down to having a bad taste in my mouth with my 3.5, engine sound and my perceived reliably of the 5.0 over the 3.5. I did a magnaflow muffler swap on mine today and it sounds so sweet.

    Agree 100% - any engine would die without proper service! Yes, ford offering "semi synthetic oil" use for it and do full flush - think every 3rd oil change or some like that - WTF? just use synthetic from the begin and short the oil the service under 5-6000 miles! Use OEM oil filters! Do not run it right a way when its cold - let it warm up, after heavy driving let it cool off around 5 min or at list drive last 5-10 min softly.
    Proofed by: 5.7 hemi - truck went over 210000 miles, 6.0 Silverado HD over 240 000 miles, 5.7 tundra - 150 000 miles - all those truck engines were never opened up- minor knockings, no timing issues, no oil leaks, no engine lights

    V6, V8, OHC, OHV, turbo or NA they can all have design issues especially on a new clean sheet design. The 5.7 Hemi's like to chew up camshafts left and right due to oil starvation at idle. GM's LS likes to wear cylinders early and collapsing lifters due to the cylinders shutting down for fuel mileage. Like you said though, not all of them have issues but there are those that do. Some engine designs are excellent and run forever with minimal issues. The inline 6 for example. Good video!

    I'll share my ecoboost horror story with you. I bought my 2013 F150 4 years ago with 62,000 miles on it. A year later I installed the RXP catch can($400)(you wouldn't believe the crap that comes out of the drain on the catch can, looks like Carmel colored milk). I've always used amsoil signature series oil and filter on this truck, but I only drive it about 7,000 miles a year. This past June I stopped at our local gas station and purchased $20 of ethanol free gas. I put $8 in my brand new Ferris zero turn mower and $12 in my truck. Truck made it about 1.5 miles and shut down. It was like driving a bucking bull, low oil pressure warning came on. Had truck towed and turns out I bought nothing but water and rust. Ferris replaced gas tank for free. Labor to fix truck was $1,600 and over $1,200 in parts(6 new injectors, new fuel pump and filter, fuel lines had to be replaced and tank had to be cleaned out, oil change also). Total repair cost $3,100!!! Gas station covered bill except for $400. Now I'm getting the turbochargers checked this week due to a burning smell and loss of power. Truck only gets about 16 mpg on highway and I don't drive like a maniac. I like the truck but not sure if I'll keep it
