When I got my Steam Deck, I became so overwhelmed with the possibilities that I had. I love the thing and I'd never give it away. But every time I pick it up, my mind becomes enwrapped in choice paralysis. Which is why I'm so, so happy I got my PlayDate. Even though I already have more than fifteen experiences, their length and style turns them into bite-sized moments of joy, instead of full-blown engagements. This was so, so worth the wait.
And, yeah, I'd totally take a backlight on the PlayDate.
The production level is outstanding and much better than 95% youtube videos out there. Kudos for that

having one for 4 weeks now the missing backlight feels just like such a overblown issue, especially reading some of the comments... yes there are rare instances where it works pretty bad, but honestly you just adapt pretty quickly and most of the time it is simply a non issue. I have no other device that is as crisp and contrasty in bright environments, so this alone to me is worth having this kind of display. Gaming in the train with blinding sunlight works so much better than even modern OLED screens.

I've similarly fallen in love with my Playdate. Exploring its catalog both on-device and on Itch reminds me of my years playing Flash games on Armorgames and other sites. I also really appreciate how it forces developers to do weird and creative things to get complex games running on it like devs did back in the early/pre-3D days.

it's been less than 24 hours with my playdate and i've also "completely fallen in love with it"
certain nuances can't be explained or shared with words or even in photos/videos. you just have to experience it for yourself to fall in love
If an experienced developer is laughing at an enthusiastic, but inexperienced developer's code, he's intimidated. It's a shame that interaction led to you abandoning your game and development in general. It's easy to say in retrospect, but we should never let people like that have a hold over us. Confidence in ourselves means everything.

20:24 There won't be any Bluetooth for audio, they tested it and it seems that is not too good for the battery life so they won't do it... it was in an update post or video recently.

It says Made In Malaysia , YET the CE sign (having the CE letters too close to each other instead of C E) means ChinaExport.
So where exactly is the Playdate manufactured than ? (Malaysia or China , as the two signs can not be on the same product if im not mistaking). Its either one country or the other but not the two at the same time.
I need to buy one too, Its so cute and fun to look at.❤ But great video, didn"t even feel like 20min.. I thought it was only < 10min because time flew by lol

Good luck, as ordering is the major downside to this handheld. They should have really teamed up with Teenage Engineering a little tighter and use their channels in the EU. This device should be available at 179€ tax included with a maximum 2 week delivery time. Now it is serious food for eBay scalpers, which is very very sad.
Finally pre-ordered one. Wish i had earlier but maybe its for the best

I think there's still a possibility that they might add support for wireless headphones in the future. The playdate does contain Bluetooth hardware already after all. They mention on their website that it will be used with the (coming soon) Playdate Stereo Dock, and that they look into supporting other Bluetooth receivers as well.

I hope they NEVER do I hate bluetooth headphones. I don't want to worry about my damn headphones running out of battery while playing games or listening to music.
Sorry to hear about that (not very surprising) interaction with a programmer. They can be a bit underdeveloped when it comes to social skills. In my game dev programming course at university, the best students were also the ones without a filter on their mouth and few people that enjoyed their prolonged company. Programming is something that benefits from having a different outlook on things, coming at it from unorthodox angles so to speak. But because it has a "perfect" form for each line of theoretical code (ie, the shortest, most performative) people can get hung up on the particulars of it all; which quite frankly is not helpful for anyone just trying to learn.
Yes the idea is good to know, but to be elitist about code to newcomers just strengthens the already prevalent culture of elitism that comes with the scene.
Our lecturers tried to get us to understand that just because we were programmers, it didn't mean that we had to only know programming as designers would often do scripting during game development and getting along as a team is far more important than perfect code when you have million dollar budgets and deadlines for your product.

whats beautiful is that parts of the considdered failed iPhone have been made by one manufacturer and that manufacturer in fact has a huge chip on their shoulder and does not discriminate their clients, so anybody can come in and make something with their parts down to selling said parts independently on the web... just like arduino or sony would...
Even though I really that device, I think I'll wait for their 2nd version to release.
You can hold the power button long enough for it to actually power off.

@@CheeseTurbulence no problem. It made a huge difference to me to start doing this because I'm on deployment and sometimes I'm not near an outlet for a while. The playdate has an amazing battery life but turning it all the way off helps even more.

Too expensive for what it is. Shipping and tax alone cost over 40 usd, which is enough to buy a very capable retro handheld from AliExpress with free shipping and no tax.

Laughing at someone’s code to their face is the #1 sign of a gatekeeper. As a developer, one of the things I fear most about our industry is running out of skilled workers. You build skilled workers by helping people *fix* their code, not laughing at it when they got it wrong. Everyone falls on their face, even the ones with some amount of natural-born talent. It’s no excuse to humiliate them
There's something I didn't fully understand: when you get a new game do they let you keep the previews ones?
Of course! But you can and will have to eventually delete some as the space is limited but you can always re-download them. 🙂

Great video, but the drifting part could have been left out. Drifting on a control with no central position is never an issue, and drifting of analog sticks can very easily be solved in software, The low precision nature of turnable resistors should be tackled by calibrating. Arcade cabinets did this like forever. But I think Nintendo rather replaces a joycon than to ask us 1 minute of our time on boot when drift happens. Problem with the crank is that it is on the right side, it should have been on the left. Most people are better at using the right hand for fire buttons. This makes it very hard to use the crank on classic rotation-and-shoot games like Asteroids, Arkanoid and granddaddy of all rotational games Gyruss.

the SDK is awesome... no one cares it's not oled... I don't care that the first production run lacks a backlight... but how dare they ask me to pre-order it now with out a backlight update. There has to be some contractual reason with teenage engineering where they need to fulfill a certain amount of years or units, or else cut a check to update the design. I really want to support panic on this, but teenage engineering was a horrible choice for a partner. I'll stick to running playdate sim... and hope the future of playdate is a software emulator i can install on better hardware.

Should include a colored backlight screen, 6 buttons (4 face buttons and 2 shoulder buttons) and SD card for that price.
This play date display looks super dark in your video, it’s a cool little gadget but maybe not for me, there so many mini devices, like this, cool little emulators and others, but I would stick with my phone, cuz I am the kind of guy who uses it continually for maybe a good 2 weeks, and put it in a desk and forget about it unless I get reminded for something…..too little time and too many things to do
how exactly is this not a grayscale display? a true 1 bit display would only show black and white and nothing in between, which this thing clearly CAN display.
