  • @dallas8692
    @dallas8692 Před měsícem +10

    I don't believe the 234/2 'Puma' was ever intended to be an intelligence gathering vehicle at all, but rather, a mobile replacement for the towed 50mm anti-tank guns of the Reconnaissance Battalion's support company, in the same way that the 234/3 was to replace the 75mm infantry guns. The support company was tasked with opening up paths through the defensive line to enable the recon cars to penetrate the enemy position. The intended recon vehicle, the 234/1 offered much better visibility, and if you were shooting whilst on standard reconnaissance, something had gone wrong. As with most things after 1943, the best laid plans succumbed to necessity, and, just as things like the Sturmgeschütz were used instead of tanks, the 234/2 was supplied en mass to a tiny few Pz Divisions to cover critical shortages, and was forced into different, unintended roles. Interestingly, many modern day recon vehicles use a 'autocannon' style weapon similar to the 20 mm flak of the 234/1 rather than the traditional 'gun' of the 234/2.
    Nothing to back these ideas up, but then, this post is also an opinion piece 😉.

      I saw a soviet report once on what type weapons killed their tanks, but I have not been able find it since(maybe not real? dunno), but it showed the majority were killed by the 50mm gun. Oddly, the 20mm had a slightly higher kill percentage( 3.8%) than the 88mm which was amazingly low in the report of around 3.5% I believe. Much lower than you would think by post war talk of the 88 and tigers and such.

    The problem with Germany is they were losing focus on what the vehicles were intended for. Yes the 234/2 might have racked up a nice kill ratio, but so did the M3 US halftrack with the 75mm gun mount, but was it effective in recon? I personally think they should have stuck with the 234/1. But Germany did this with everything which is part of the reason that they never actually had anything in the actual units. Who is going to make a video showing a panzer unit attacking in 1945 with Panzer III's however, there were active Panzer III's still in some panzer units at the end of the war. If they had a tank that worked, they didn't send it back to Berlin or let it go. They kept it until it was destroyed. Everyone today assumes that these Panzer Divisions had what they had on paper, they never did.

      After all, the Puma was designed by the Germans for the Germans as a recce vehicle with no other functions, for service with armoured divisions.
      Meanwhile, the Ratel was designed as an IFV, armed with a 20mm, and based on the ZA military experience of British doctrine and vehicles followed by a selection of French vehicles, all of which serve the function of delivering infantry to the fight and then supporting them directly.

Pretty similar but germany went straight from the 50mm to the powerful 75mm PaK 40 which was much better than the 57mm, and had an HE shell about 3 times more powerful than the 57mm 6 pounder.

      The 5.0cm PAK 38 weighed 1063kg and was first used in combat in April 1941.
      The 57mm 6 pounder entered combat in May 1942 and weighed 1140kg with L43 and the L52 1215kg.
      The 7.5 cm Pak 40 entered combat service about April 1942 and weighed 1425kg.
      So the 7.5cm PAK 40 gun weight only 17% more and was entering service around the same time.
      The 6 pounder was an excellent gun but the Germans needed more than a 57mm could offer plus had limited tungsten to make a small gun useful.
      Towards the end of the war the Germans were on the verge of introducing the 5.5cm Geraet 58 (system 58) FLAK gun which was about 57mm since German guns are quoted by ammunition diameter not barrel diameter minus rifling lands.

      Lol, not sure why your telling me this, I’m a historian and I already knew everything you said to me. Also, you made a mistake. There was no such thing as a 6 pounder with an L/52 barrel. It was L/43 pre-production then it was upgraded to L/50, not L/52.

      @@chadmysliviec8449 1 I was replying to the OP. 2 Wikipedia and several other sources refer to an L52 barrel. See the penetration tables. Barrel length can be measured from muzzle to breach. From muzzle to the neck of the cartridge. From muzzle to the base of the round itself. 3 you’re a professional historian? You come across like a 14-year-old war thunder historian. At least I added information such as the weight of the weapons

      @@williamzk9083 I don't even know what war thunder is. You claiming that I'm a war thunder historian just looks bad for you, because you know that I got you, because their is no such thing as a 6 pounder with an L/52.

      This thing could still destroy modern MBTs if it could shoot them at their sides. Back then, the gun was impressive, today it just means that MBT are weak on their flanks...
