@@rickss69 Prince was a very competent songwriter, producer, and guitarist, with flair and panache, but he's not the most skilled or best guitarist out there. Of note: Clapton has also said, at various times, that SRV, JJ Cale, Buddy Guy were the best guitarists.
Of course, Clapton hasn't hung around jazz cats like Joe Pass, Al Dimeola, George Benson much, nor did he ever share a stage with Terry Kath (whom Hendrix is quoted as saying was better than he was) nor Lenny Breault, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Danny Gatton, and so many others. There is no best or greatest guitarist. Too many metrics, too many genres. It's impossible to say.

Prince wasn’t the best at all instruments. But he had an ear to what needed to be performed by any instrument. That’s why if you played with prince , you were of studio caliber.
Princes had that ear. like that actor in th movie whiplash (forget the aggressive bs), prince wanted perfection
He wasn’t the best guitar player. Stevie Ray Vaughan , Randy Rhodes , Eddie, Ritchie Blackmore, Dude from ufo were probably all better than prince on the strings.
But prince could write a song. Prince was like his own genre, studio musician mixed with rock pop and lyrical rap schemes.

It was cool for me seeing him pre-superstardom and after. That 1st concert I saw was in a 3900 seat auditorium in a small city in Georgia. I knew then and there that he would go on to something special, but couldn't have imagined what was to follow.
A short 3 years later Prince and the Revolution were selling out multiple dates in major cities across the U.S. including The Superdome and The Orange Bowl(which they renamed The Purple Bowl for the concert). I have attended over 100 concerts and have always told people that The Purple Rain Tour is my favorite of them all. I caught two shows on that tour. Although I've been a fan of his for a long long time, I had never heard him play acoustic guitar until just now. Humbled. Blown away 🤯. Deeply, sincerely, impressed. It makes you wonder how he ever found time to get as good as he is on that single instrument considering everything else that he had going on with writing and arranging and performing and going over every mind you detail of his career as he built himself into the superstar that he became. He has the guitar chops of someone who has been in the woodshed with a guitar and nothing else for his entire life!
    Peerless.

I remember when I was learning guitar back in the early 90's and saw a top 100 list of best guitarists ever in a magazine and noticed that was Prince was high up in the list somewhere, it's crazy because most people see him as a singer/performer rather than a guitarist and don't really appreciate just how good he was, at least the magazine knew his talent.

What's crazy about Prince is everyone knows he plays guitar, but he can't justifiably be categorized as a guitar player. Hearing him play without a band, on an acoustic, there's no denying his acumen, and adroitness is on par with top tier guitarists. Unequivocally, the man was an exceptional guitar player, it's just his chops were that tight on several instruments. His understanding of each was based on their respective foundations, and specialized techniques. So if he's on keys, he's not a guitar player on keys, he's the flippin'' piano man. And still, this falls short of describing his musicianship, because he was also able to compose unique parts for each of these instruments, from their unique perspectives, all at the same time, which made him a beast in the studio. When he'd take it on the road, he was also able to lead other musicians to hit all his subtle nuances on their instruments while he's playing guitar. He wasn't just a prodigy, he was a prodigy among prodigies.
Obviously, this video got me thinking. I don't think I've ever heard Prince playing solo on acoustic before. This kind of hit me like hearing Hendrix play Hear My Train a Comin' on a 12 string for the first time. I'm glad CZcams pushed the post.
