    The only way a person could ever play guitar like Richard Smith is to: Live with their parents until their mid 20's, Not have a day job, Listen to Chet and Jerry every breathing moment, and play and practice from sun up to sundown. Like Lenny Breau...Lenny did nothing but play guitar, thats why his wife left him.

    These arguments about who's the "better" guitarist all over CZcams are, of course, misplaced energy. Jerry and Richard Smith fill fundamentally different ecological niches: Jerry was a creative genius and a multifaceted master entertainer. Richard is a master practitioner of Jerry's music (and others') and a great teacher. I would say both of them are virtuosos. It's often true that a student of certain inspirational artist will surpass that artist in technical prowess, but that does not necessarily make him "better." One example is Stevie Ray and Albert King. Stevie was a thrall of King and went on to surpass him in terms of speed and precision but I doubt he would have ever claimed to be "better" than his hero. That's not a perfect example because Stevie brought tons of creativity himself -- but you get the point. Plato and Aristotle, etc. Jerry never even claimed to be a great guitar player but rather a "guitar thinker." I personally think he was both. Richard is inspirational in his own way and a gift to music.

    • @garst59
      @garst59 Před 9 lety +1

      Nothing against JR, great writer / performer, but always a second banana.... Most of his songs only made money when Chet or someone else recorded them.
      Neither CA nor JR could, on their best day, hold a candle to this guy. Technically, Richard Smith is the best finger style guitarist IMO.. so far.

      Actually, I'd probably be turning metal on a lathe as an engineer :) but you are right. Without Chet, Jerry, Django, Joe Pass, Albert Lee... I probably wouldn't be a musician. Those guys also had their influences. Jerry without Ray Charles influence, Chet without Merle's influence. But those guys were inspired. Hats off to the greats. There are so many great players around today and everyone learns from each other. Check out Antoine Boyer. Versatile with technique, gypsy jazz, classical, and fingerstyle jazz great harmonic knowledge. One to watch. Thanks for watching!

    1000 times better than Tommy Emmanuel. but the last song Jerry's breakdown was way too fast slow down.
