      Perhaps. No greater evil has come to that class of animals called, by a section of that class, 'humans'. Ever to be undone? Yet this adoration through music and voice is supreme, still. Not saying that that elitist; power and profit seeking technocratic class ARE evil - only that they have DONE immeasurable evil, some believing that they have done and are doing, good. They have no idea, except the most evil-following and weakest among them. They know exactly what they have done, and are doing. Bach. You are always here, along with others. God have mercy on us all, and thank you Bach and others who have created inspired beauty to nurture and heal the sorrowing heart and the soul.

      well said. In fact we do have hope. I did not understand it so poignanty until the loss of a parent. This music attests to the Majesty of the Christ and the message that he came to earth as celebrated at Easter, declaring the pathway as the Eternal Hope and as God's own Son, that without sin was crucified, dead and buried and was raised on the third day. Giving rise to our Eternal Hope. It is a full account of the Love God has for this world and planet that he sent his only son to this world to suffer in our place - once and for all for the sins of man, knowing we could not reach into his presence or comprehend as this music so fully realises, and Bach understood. I also read recently by the history and listening to Ben Shapiro in a CZcams interview, that the Jewish people have not regarded that, and by commentators on the OT and NT scriptures - they are still as a people in judgement for it; and then of course for whatever is happening in the world today in terms of their corporate sins, as every country and people is also. The more we see the unecessary suffering in 2024 and that it is 2000 years after the fact, then I'm truly hoping we all grasp at that hope.

Je me réjouis d’avance!

    I love it all, but especially just that opening chorus--the words are triumphant, yet the music is dark and harrowing. St. John used spiritual paradoxes, e.g., the light shining in the darkness (i.e., normally, light can't shine IN the darkness without the darkness dissipating...hence John was declaring a spiritual mystery here). The theological statement I think Bach was making here in line with St. John, namely of Christ Crucified presented as simultaneously both Humiliated Victim and Exalted Victor....it just blows me away.

    • @sebthirlway1634
      @sebthirlway1634 Před rokem

      Your comment stood out, especially the "paradoxes" bit. I think you get the same thing as I do. But I don't think the opening words are triumphant in the least. I think they're despairing. A Passion which begins with the suspicion that, actually, everything is and was all for nothing, unless God shows us ("Zeig uns!") that it wasn't - now that's a paradox! If there's a triumph there, it's the triumph of faith, in spite of despair, that this _will_ be shown. In a performance of this incredible piece, of course, that faith is justified: because the re-performance of the Passion, after the opening chorus, and all the way to the close, will suffice. Outside that... not so much.
      Bach was about at the same time as a lot of revolutionary thought: Pascal, Leibniz, Malebranche, Descartes. Should God have to empirically demonstrate himself - again - for the world not to collapse? Bach grasped St John's messianism perfectly in this music.
      This is why I love the opening chorus: it's on the edge of the exactly the paradox you point out.

    • @retepd1e
      @retepd1e Před 5 měsíci

      That Light shinning in the dark is the suffering submitted human Substitute who by surrendering gain total victory over sin and death. Bach understood it so clearly. Inspired music ❤️

    • @stephenweiss6001
      @stephenweiss6001 Před 5 měsíci

      @@sebthirlway1634 Interesting. What in the words of the opening chorus suggest to you that it is not triumphant, that the words are not a declaration of the Lordship of Jesus Christ that He shows precisely as He hangs in death on the Tree? But perhaps I missed it? Now, of course, only through faith in what St. Paul called the Word of the Cross (1 Cor 1:18) is this seen and believed, tied in to what Luther called the "Theology of the Cross". And Bach was an orthodox Lutheran. But I can't locate anything in the words of the opening chorus that suggest otherwise? The music on the other hand, yes, that suggests a dark tragedy, no doubt. In other words, if we go by our senses, it appears to be nothing but a defeat. But if we go by faith in the Word of God, the Word of the Cross as St. Paul coined it, then do we see it for the triumph that it is--that by His death He slew death.

    • @sebthirlway1634
      @sebthirlway1634 Před 5 měsíci

      @@stephenweiss6001 Good question! The answer, which I didn't write (or know) clearly before, is: sure, the words are words of faith. But if everyone really had this faith, there'd be no problem. No-one would bother to speak, sing (or perhaps even write) these words: there'd be no need. It's the act of singing these words which is a testament to despair: words _asking for_ or _hoping for_ faith, rather than simply reporting faith ("Hey, I believe. Life's good! What shall we do tonight?"). The darkness is our darkness as much as Christ's. And the solution applies to, and works on both. I really liked your original comment because it hinted at this "spiritual mystery". A very deep, clever piece of music!

      Paul Taylor, so far as have not seen any instruments here that match your description. I assume by "viola" you mean a slightly larger version of a violin. If you meant some other instrument, then I don't know how to help you, except in an ensemble such as this there might be 'viola da gamba' instruments which resemble a cello, but with more strings hence more pegs, and I think there is also a theorbo in there, but that does not resemble a viola.

      @@paultaylor6821 , well, I missed those due to their brief appearance.
      Here is how one finds out these things (besides writing a CZcams comment with hopes that somebody else bothers to do your research for you). You go to Wikipedia, or Google, or any of the numerous easily accessed online references on Bach's music, and look up "St John Passion". Under the "instrumentation" section, you read that along with other strings and winds, Bach scored this piece to include two "viola d'amore" and lute (which I had assumed was a theorbo based on a quick glance from a funny angle in the video). Then you Google or Wikipedia "viola d'amore" and ta-da!

    The music and performance- sublime- Bravo to all the performers. The text- hateful, spiteful and incredibly historically incorrect. It sounds like revisionist propaganda. No wonder there are so few performances of this work. Such a shame that Bach will forever be linked to the rabidly hateful rantings of Luther.
