    Video is wonderful.
My backyard mechanic replaced the transmission but put the wipers on backwards. So now they miss I big spot in front of the driver!
The woman that sold me the car, today changed around the blades! She thought that was wrong.
Now they are worse drivers blade goes right off the windshield!!
So her husband, true VW mechanic said to stop by tomorrow and he would switch them!
Looks like I could, if I had the right tool!!

    • @Ken-1
      @Ken-1 Před 2 lety

It's a bear for sure, but you have to make your own marks to guide you (a paint marker works nice). The marks act like fake little wipers to help visually guide you in adjusting the park position. Still time consuming though, as you have to plug and power up the assembly and readjust again and again.

Awesome video! My wipers stoped working and I was afraid the motor went. Followed the video and found one of the linkages were seized on the wiper transmission and was able to get it working smoothly again. Saved hundreds of dollars being able to remove it myself rather than a shop replacing everything

I'll admit I didn't buy the part from you but this video was invaluable to finishing the job in the short time I had.
I would add that the wipers will not work with the hood up. The tech does mention to shut the hood before hes tests the wipers but I didn't realize this was due to an interlock and not just out of caution. I thought I somehow shorted the harness for a moment. Imagine my relief when it dawned on me that my hood was still open.

Thanks to 1A Auto Parts and Mike () for this instructive video.
Where one has to pay attention: the shown alignment of the transmission (I believe it is called a 'diagonal' alignment in this video, frame 7:15+, silly crib 'passer l'arme à gauche'). This will prevent the wipers from 'cudgeling' the cowl panel. The excenter gearing (conversion of rotation into to and fro motion) cannot push them any further. I did mount the whole transmission in the shown alignment - without any temporary change for ease of handling. A still picture/sketch, say at the bottom of the screen, might have been helpful. (The transmission was for a Golf IV, not a Jetta, some minor differences, no hex key was required, but the alignment part should be universal.)
I still remember the wiper motor of a tractor where everything was open (one wiper arm only). Selfsame excenter transmission though.
Wiper parking was random at first. Running the wiper motor in interval, without attached wipers, acted as reset. The initial behavior was somewhat akin to what happens if one cuts the motor with the wipers running. The wiper motor 'remembers' the old position on reignition and traverses an extra arc. Once I would have understood.
There is no need to mark anything if one mounts the wiper arms (as well as the transmission gear) in parking position (l'arme à gauche). Things will be out of kilter anyhow if the wipers did seize up.
The wipers will work without the motor running (even as - most of the time - the window regulators) but the key must be turned.
The copper nut which has to be press-screwed into the toothed spindle of the wiper motor can work itself loose again. It is sometimes hard to judge how much tightening will be required.
Insight: car makers use copper parts (another example would be the oil sump washer) very much like the military. A rifled gun barrel imparts spin on the copper casings of the ammunition by biting in. Where the parallel breaks down: there is no such thing as an 'ammo puller' or 'penetrating ammo oil' if something is stuck - or so I hope.
(A modified 'plumber's garrote' - or whatever it is called - was unequal to the task. One more purchase.)
The cowl panel is very much a click on part. One should think Lego and pry off the front or back edge slightly before pushing. Contrary to appearances, it is not glued to the windscreen. The fit is not quite as good as before (16 year old car). Warped plastic and a hairline crack between windscreen and cowl. Not sure about sealing.

So do you just keep adjusting different positions hoping you will find the start position. I think the blades were frozen to windshield when my Dwight tried to use them and completely messed up start position so blades stop in middle of windshield.

After the windscreen change the system does not work properly, it lives its own live now, sometimes it works sometimes not.

Hello- I recently purchased this Transmission Linkage for our 08 Jetta. I followed your video to a T, however I'm having an issue. When the wipers are on, the left wiper (drivers side) does not wipe all the way to the left. It will come about 2/3 of the way over. I've watched your video over and over and have actually took everything back apart and reassembled but have had no luck. I thought by ensuring that the wipers were in the stopped (parked) position prior to bolting the wiper arms down would do the trick, but no luck. Please help!

1A Auto Parts it is a 2014 Jetta TDI. And the procedure is slightly different from your example. However I took it apart but I think the wiper motor and transmission (linkage) is ok. I think the issue is the the wiper blade arm. The wiper transmission stud seems to have stripped off the gears from the wiper blade arm. I'm about to put it back together to test just the motor and transmission without the blades attached. Initially the issue was a that the wipers get stuck and a buzzing grinding noise is heard while they remain in the same position.. I may be wrong here but I'll test it out soon without the wiper blades on. I'll update.
