  • Making a Scrapyard Spring Powered CROSSBOW!
this was one of my projects from lockdown in may 2020
because we couldn't go out I decided to try and make something out of parts and scrap we had laying around. let me know what you think! personally its not as powerful as I thought it was going to be but hey it was fun to make.

It looks cool, but the swinging steel arms are too heavy and steal most of the energy.
Make them from alu, that should still be strong enough and way lighter.
Also you could taper the arms to the end, which will also reduce weight and increase performance.
Further more I would design the whole crossbow in such a way that at the zero position (so not cocked)
there is already some tension on the springs. This would require a shorter string.
The flat spring to hold down the bolts I would not make from alu - use 2 mm steel for this and that will work
    much better.
Regarding the bolts - when you have them like that and the bolt hits something hard, the nail will be pushed
into the wood and eventually split it. Rather use a thinker piece of steel (ideally hardened, but for testing
it doesn't matter) like a 10 mm rod and hollow that out with an 8 mm hole (requires a lathe) 10 mm or so deep
and then use a 8 mm shaft and stick it in there. Or use the 10 mm steel piece and make the last 10 mm of it
thinner to 8 mm thickness (just requires a drill and a file) and then put an 10 mm alu or steel pipe over it.
    7:05 really nice garden :)

    Thanks for sharing this crossbow.

Your arrow is too heavy and thick. Just made it lighter and use a different kind of tip. Make those springs longer, too, and will have way more power.

I suggest you build a reverse compound crossbow aided by welding clamps. I made one and it's very powerful ;)

Your springs are too long making them not tensioned enough when you cock the string back. Cut about 1/3 of the length off of them, or shorten your string by about 1/3 and try it.

I had a crossbow idea similar to this one but using one tension spring connecting the arms. Your design is probably a little more powerful though

oh nice that idea does sound good! potentially more powerful using one spring as it would have to extend further?? maybe something to look into one day!

@@productioncrafts6636 no, I meant yours looks like it has more power. But I'm working on a gun at the moment and don't have extra time for a crossbow

What kind of springs did you use

Nice try, u still need alot of work to do bout the spring for more power to kill

yea I am currently working on a few new crossbow designs that are hopefully more powerful haha

thank you! no to be honest a lot of my builds are free hand, sometimes ill sketch stuff out first to brainstorm but this one was kind of made in the moment.
