Tesla Model Y - Blackout Emblems with HyperDip

  • The Tesla Model Y was the first Tesla to come with blacked out trim. As Tesla continues to move towards a full lineup of blacked out cars, it is interesting that they still come adorned with chrome emblems, front and back.
Although they don't look terrible, they could look better in black. HyperDip has provided us with an emblem blackout kit to show how their new product stacks up against traditional Plasti Dip.
HyperDip is a DIY application process that comes in a Satin finish and 2 Gloss finishes. Simple spray on, peel off application means most anyone can do this. The best part is that since it is not a paint, it wipes right off, so no longer do you need to worry about overspray.
I am very pleased with how this turned out and love the new look of our Tesla Model Y. We have completed that full blackout look and the car feels much more complete.

Yeah, I agree… Curious to see how that pans out
To my eye , De badged looks the best, followed by black logos, followed by chrome logos.
I ended up de badging my car, but my wife thought it might look better with the emblems back on. At least on the rear
I had purchased vinyl covers for the chrome logos… And I ended up sticking it right on the paint. Looks great, don’t have to worry about my towel getting hooked on it when I’m washing it. I can’t speak for a longevity, but my gut says it will hold up well
Also it was good timing, because I think Tesla is cracking down on other companies using their logos!

It didn’t turn out well so I just placed an order for new badging in the correct finish. I’ve never had an issue with PlastiDip until this. I looked into HyperDip and just couldn't justify the premium you pay over PlastiDip. On small projects like emblems etc. you can justify the premium for ease of use/clean up but imagine doing 4 wheels and using 7 coats of HyperDip, can you imagine the number of cans you would have to use? And did you see how easily it tore and you were able to clean it off? Now imagine that same material on your wheels, that level of protection is just not the same as PlastiDip. Again great for small projects, too expensive for anything larger. Great vid!

More even coats would help. Those letters are really hard because of all the angles

For others stumbling on this video like I did, my recommendation is to NOT do this method and just buy black plate covers or replacement decals for a fraction of the cost and time. This is not as easy as it looks. It took me 3 attempts to get the front logo and I’m currently on my 3rd attempt for the back logo. The sides of the logo are easy but peeling between the top and bottom part of the logo is frustratingly difficult. It constantly wants to pull off the dip from the logos as well. I’ve tried pulling away, using the tool, thoroughly cleaning, low humidity, plenty of time for drying, it doesn’t matter. There is a reason they give you 2 cans of the stuff and a mile of painter’s tape. I wish I never saw this video. I blame myself for not looking for other alternatives before dropping almost $60 on this method.

Wow, I’m sorry you had such a hard time with this. I thought it was really easy to do, and a lot of people shared the same. Make sure you are doing very light coats. 7-9 light coats should do the trick. Get a toothpick to help you remove excess that doesn’t peel off easily. Make sure once you get a flap started, pull away from the logo.

@@BeardedTeslaGuy Yeah, I don’t think drying is the issue. I’m doing 7 coats. I just can’t get the piece in between the logo off without pulling it off the emblem too. 3rd attempt on the back logo was a failure as well so we’ll go with attempt #4 tomorrow. What seems to help is making sure the small strip between the logo is attached to a larger piece so its easier to grab with the tool.
