Me, having a bad mental health day: ☹️
Me, seeing Jesse dropped a new video: 😃
"A Study in Drowning" is one of those that's hard to judge, but I actually loved it. Not just for the gothic atmosphere, but also because the author explores female trauma. Throughout the novel, "drowning" is just a giant metaphor for the trauma Effie felt after being assaulted by her professor, and no one on campus believing her and everyone blaming her, not the teacher. Her "hallucinations" were a way for her to mentally cope with what happened, to escape the reality.
...Yeah, I loved the book though I totally get why you and others don't.
Remember that trend where people would dress as a book cover? Your shirt with You Should Be So Lucky is a vibe.
Agreed with everything you said about A Study in Drowning 👏
Me too! Great atmosphere, not so great plot.
For your second channel, I would love to see you play Doki Doki Literature Club! It’s such an interesting game that combines horror, books, and multiple outcomes. Always love the videos and can’t wait to see more!!!❤
That shirt is fabulous 🩵
Jesse, if you haven’t read Lonely Castle in the Mirror, PLEASE add it to your Japanese-translated TBR! It’s my current favorite of the year and I think you’d love it. Be prepared for FEELS.
omg seconded! it’s one of my faves! 😍
Yes!!!!❤
okay shirt!!! giving style giving edge giving faSHUN!!!
I read 9 books in May. The one I think you would like the most is A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher. It's a funny standalone fantasy about a 14yo girl who can magically manipulate baked goods and has to defend her city against an invasion
you'll cacth me reading that just to figure out what defensive baking is
komi can't communicate sounds so interesting to me as someone who struggled with severe selective mutism until my adult years
i had my best reading month in a long time thanks to getting back into manga! a sign of affection has my heart and was my favorite for sure.
sending good vibes for continuing with my hero academia. you got this!
so glad we're both back in our manga eras!
For My Hero Academia …
Definitely recommend the anime over the manga (if you haven’t watched it already). Thanks to all the action, it’s way more digestible in an animated form. And all of the scenes that are already emotional on their own are elevated by the soundtrack 😊
It was a really bad reading month for me as well! I just didnt have a feeling of what I wanted to read heres to June being better!
I’m so glad you’re enjoying Komi Can’t Communicate! It’s one of my fave series and Komi is so relatable. Idk if anybody’s made a list of them or anything, but all or most of the character’s names are puns or wordplay that tell you about their most dominant trait or about their character! For example, Tadano Hitohito is literally “just a guy”. (Tada no hito = “just some guy”). Najimi’s name translates to “childhood friend”, so they’re adaptable to anybody and knows everyone, etc. I have a lot of fun every time new characters are introduced; once you’re a good amount of volumes in, it would be fun to look it up! 😊
I read Tales From The Cafe this month and I loved it as much as the first book!
I love I Hate Fairyland, Skottie Young is one of my fav comic artists :) Oz is good too. Idunno what comics you’ve already read but some of my favs are by Brian K. Vaughn (Saga, Y the Last Man, Barrier), Decorum is gorgeous, Fables is fun, Sea of Stars I love ⭐️ 💕
jesse is back!
I loved "We Could Be So Good" and now I'm more hyped to pick up "You Should Be So Lucky" !!
I loved Before the Coffee gets cold! The whole series I loved, but the first one as definitely my favorite! I made the mistake of reading it at work and it didn’t go well.😢
I started watching the anime of Komi can't communicate and totally forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder.
Omg I love your shirt 😍
I am so excited to read You Should Be So Lucky! I read a book by the same author, We Could Be So Good, earlier this year (loved it so so much), and I think you'd really like it. I think it's set in the same world (companion-novel-esque) as You Should Be So Lucky, and it sounds like they're thematically similar.
I just finished If We Were Villains and I don't know what to do with myself...
I promptly read it again upon finishing 😅
In May, I finished 5 books! I read the first 3 books in the Before the Coffee Gets Cold series, Blade of Secrets by Tricia Levenseller, and Mika in Real Life by Emiko Jean 🥲 I also read the majority of The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich in May but finished June 1st 😅. Glad to hear you enjoyed Before the Coffee Gets Cold (I liked the last 3 stories the most)! Looking forward to hear more of your thoughts about it on the 2nd channel!
I felt the exact same way when reading A Study in Drowning, something felt slightly off.
my fav book of may was "in memoriam" by alice winn, it's historical fiction set in ww1 and it's about how the characters change and grow because of the war and the relationship between them. I really want to reread it because I want to annotate it
I was *thinking* of reading ‘Before The Coffee Gets Cold’ too. Wish I could’ve read it in May
I read 2.5 books in May which is a lot for me. I read 2 books from a detective thriller series, called the DS Adam Tyler series. The 2 books I read were Nighthawking and Cold Reckoning. Both books had me turning pages like there was no tomorrow. A really fun detective series. If you love absolute human disasters solving crimes, these books are for you.
The book I am nearly finished with is The Nightland Express. It’s a unique historical fantasy which takes place in the American south west in 1860. Two 16 year olds take a job with a mysterious branch of the Pony Express and soon find out their job entangles them with mysterious magical creatures who live just beyond the veil. I’m not quite finished yet, but I’ve really enjoyed it so far. Also, both main characters are lgbtq+ so it’s a great read for Pride Month.
So far my best month because I actually, finally, finished a book. I often pick up a book but just can't finish it. In May I read and finished, Sleep by C. L. Taylor. (and it was a damn good book)
I've seen quite a few people disappointed in a study in drowning lately... so I think it's going to be one I skip. Unfortunately komi can't communicate wasn't one that worked for me in the end, but I am glad you enjoyed it so much!
I would buy your merch with a T-shirt that stated “Books are my Sport!” 📚
Haha I LOVE I Hate Fairyland! You describe it so perfectly too!
WHAT NO WAY I literally finished You Should Be So Lucky today :D LOVE LOVE LOVE that book
I haven’t read a lot but I’ve been binge reading Zodiac Academy.
Happy Pride Month 🏳️🌈
P.S. Cute shirt
i hated "a study in drowning". so much of was done so poorly and i was rolling my eyes the whole time. especially bc the villain of the story is a man she's hallucinated and been tormented by her whole life and it's the same man who's the villain and abuser in her favorite book and she continues to say "omg the book is a love story
Big yikes! I saw the title and thought "Sherlock Holmes". I guess not !
@suzannar7006 i mean im honestly the minority in my opinion bc I've really only seen other people loving the book so if it's something you're interested in I'd say get it from a library and give it a shot. but yeah i definitely didn't like it lol
I completely agree with you😭😭I honestly can’t name a single thing about this book that I liked. I would’ve quit but it was the only book I had with me while dog sitting
I couldn’t handle Effy, she had no personality besides being ✨pretty and sad✨ and like you said, the final confrontation was over in maybe two sentences. I also thought the world building was just… strange? All the war and the sleeper stuff for what? Just to show how horribly prejudiced and shitty a person Effy is? I gave it a two cause sure, women taking back power from their oppressors is good. But basically everything else about the book was bad 😅
I really want to get back into manga the mangas I’ve read recently was death note and sailor moon
Great wrap up 📚🧋🌈🍄⭐
I love my hero academia my hero academia gets very interesting in volume five there's so much that goes on past volume five you just have to get your volume five and I promise you'll love it
You should be so lucky sounds so good though 👀
I also read Insomniacs After School this month!!!! I read the first 4 volumes and agree that it really is just a wholesome, good time! I love it and definitely recommend continuing it
I can't wait to hear all about how My Hero Academia vol 5 compares to the anime now, so you're going to have to read it this time 😂
In May, I ended up reading 7 manga, 3 graphic novels, 3 MG books, a fantasy, and a thriller! The majority were 4 or 5 stars, so it was a wonderful reading month.
Was really nice getting back into Manga and I can't wait to continue Yona of the Dawn and Karneval next month! Also continuing the Iremonger fantasy series by Edward Carey because it was so weird and unique and right up my alley!
A study in drowning
I agree with you, but I had to give it a 2.5 star rating because the romance irritated me it just felt forced, and I just didn't care about it🤷♀️😖
Oh my gosh I just finished A Fate Inked in Blood and it was so bad. I just hate books where the characters are so mean to the main character and control them, that’s not enjoyable to read about and then the ending was the same as the only 2 other fantasy romance I’ve read. So I’m giving up on that genre 😅 I did really enjoy reading The Wishing Game in May but wished it were longer.
Recommendation: When Women were Dragons
OMGOSH.
Kelly Barnhill mentioned!
What a great book and what a great author! I would also recommend “The Unlicensed Magician,” but I’m biased because that’s my favorite of her works. :)
I believe that you can read more of My Hero Academia. Maybe if you get to even vol 5 you’ll break the curse! 😄
Maybe you just don’t actually like MHA that much? I think it’s overhyped tbh . There’s so much manga out there you’ll really like , why keep reading the same thing over and over? But good luck I guess lol
I used to be a Mha fan ,haven’t read the manga but the first few seasons of the anime I did enjoy ,but I am now seasons behind and unlike some shows I dropped like Horimiya or The Fire Hunter where I knew that one day I would get back into the series one day so far I’m not planning on catching up to MHA.
Isit the best thing ever not really but it’s not the worst. It’s an average show being overhyped.
Maybe one day when the manga and anime are done I might give it another shot.
I feel the exact same about A study in drowning, I was so annoyed since it was my first read of the year 🥲 I could not connect, it was a 2
I did read a book this month that I believe you’d like and that is “Even if this love disappeared tonight” the love one not the tears one they are two different books i got confused 😭, but anyways I do think you’d love that
For me the books that marked May this year are War and peace and the brothers Karamazov !!! Im so obsessed with them new favorites added in a very dull reading year I’m so happy
