Depressed girl: tries to kill herself
Insurance company: do it again
You meant pharmaceutical company. They're the ones literally selling treatments with suicide warnings
Medications for depression have those suicide warnings because people who are very depressed have no energy to do anything, but when given appropriate medication they feel more motivated in general. So if someone with was/is suicidal they potentially have the energy and functioning with medication to carry out their plan. It's not that depression meds make suicidal ideation worse.
@@vitas4783 you have misguided information. The pharmaceuticals aren't the problem. It is indeed the insurance companies. Reason why most of those doctor's deny insurance is because insurance companies deny claims. So then the Doctor has a bill with no one to pay out. So now the pt. has the bill and who knows how long that will take to get paid back.
Every medical issue stems from insurance companies sleazing their way out of claims.

Post-modernism is the Cynical view of reality around us. But now comedy begin to turn Post-Post-modernism, which mean comedians not just saying the current situation is fucked up, and done. In the new wave they urging people to be better, and offer solutions to know how to change things.
In fairness, one of the people who spearheaded change in the laws surrounding mental health treatment was a politician. He's prominently mentioned in this show. Don't make generalising statements; many politicians are there to genuinely try and make things change. Hey Hasan,
I don’t know if you or anyone will read this. It’s currently 2 AM in New York. I am sitting next to my mother who we suspected just had a psychotic meltdown. I’m so afraid of starting this journey, but we need to raise awareness about mental health in our South Asian community. If anyone’s reading this folks take it seriously and raise awareness. It’s always not of importance until it happens to you and when it does, it will turn your whole life upside down.
I genuinely hope ya'll pull through. Thank you for your comment!

To college students, take advantage of the counseling your campus offers.
Beka Niko and that means EVERYONE! Overrun that shit so that ur schools know how important ur health departments are! Even if u don’t currently need it, USE IT.
Insurance companies are notoriously known for charging people higher premiums if you ever have any treatment or counseling and it shows up on your record. The real solution is affordable healthcare and healthier familial relationships.
I tried it once in my first couple semesters because I had high anxiety and my depression was at an all time high because my grades weren't that good back then and I was paying an insane amount of tuition because I was out of state
So I called the counseling at my campus and they asked me some questions to see where I was at mentally... and just because I wasn't borderline suicidal, they told me to try an app to see if it helped
@@AnimeChowVT in my faculty there are a mental care unit but the demand is so high. I register myself on august and still in waiting list till now. But it is 'luckier' cuz not every faculty in my uni have that. Also the uni hospital just have a longer waiting list.
They often have waitlists, are only for short term (roughly 6 sessions), only let you make appointments every 2-4 weeks, so as not to clog the system, make it difficult to switch to a different counselor if you aren't a good match with one, and don't offer necessary in-depth therapies like CBT and DBT. They also do not personalize the care, in my experience, and have trouble even remembering who you are.
The best option is finding a non-profit government-sponsored family and individual counselling center which opperates through a sliding scale, or an on campus counselling/therapy service run by masters students to practice their skills through the psychology or medical departments.
Why is anything that calls itself "United" a huge nightmare?
It’s slowly changing, but unfortunately mental health issues have a stigma even in the medical field

After coming to Germany for studying - I thought my health insurance is expensive and there's no way to get rid of it. I always thought that why should I pay that much. After few days, I started to realize what a blessing I have. Having a health insurance in Germany pays everything. From physical therapy to mental therapy - everything is covered. Being an South Asian, it was hard to go to counseling for mental health issue. Luckily, I went and the counselor arrange everything for me. Literally, I didn't had to do anything at all except signing some consents and visiting my therapist every week. Getting better day by day and still my therapist won't release me and again pursue my insurance to pay for more sessions. Because here in Germany therapists have a vision - "Don't let your patient leave until you make sure that they will be mentally healthy and never need to come back again."
Definitely, I am getting more than I am paying for my insurance. Still the insurance are making profits and rarely deny any claims. I'm wondering what is wrong with American health insurance. Literally I can't find a difference between USA health insurance and South Asian. As a developed country they should be able to provide more support, specially for health. If they can't assure one of the basic needs of human, obviously, they are going on the wrong direction.
I live in Germany and i never had Problems with my insurance. It is indeed a very good system here and im very happy i am able to access it.
I've learn about Germany's insurance a bit by a documentary called sick around the world, i believe, which really tells you how much they care. Of course im not an expert but it was a shock for me to know as i am studying public health.
Don’t say those things. Now 40 million Americans want to live in Germany.
Same for france italy even spain worst one
Because the less shit they have to pay for the more money they get to keep for themselves. At least I'm pretty sure that's how it works. It always comes down to greed. -_- Even though they take a pretty good chunk of money out of our paychecks to go towards our healthcare plan and STILL charge us a fucking copay. Like they will literally look for any reason to deny you. I got denied long term disability because I have anxiety 🙃 never even been hospitalized or had to take off work for it, but I still got denied. I got denied coverage when I was pregnant before I was able to get health insurance too, even after tons of people assured me I'd be covered because I was pregnant -_- it's all fucking bullshit.
They should have named this show "USA Exposed with Hasan Minhaj".
Patriot act is essentially the same title but also that he is acting to save america
You should watch "Who Is America" have a laugh and watch in despair.
Don't say "USA EXPOSED" as if the rest of the countries in the world takes "mental health" seriously and the "insurance" covers it totally.
@@slayerpoint-dr1pn not the whole world, and that was the point most Muslims, Africans, Asians, etc. don't take mental health serious. Even conservative West European doesn't take mental health seriously. But in contrast to the US West European countries mental health is covered by the health insurance. It is not against the US but America really need a better healthcare system, because they are far from those countries who have the similar political, economic and social philosophies.
He forgot to mention if you find someone who is covered and will see you, its usually a 4-6 week wait until your first appointment. Which is fabulous when your suicidal. 😤
My first appointment with therapist took 2 months

Thank you so much for covering mental illness, especially in the Asian community. I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder a couple months back. When I told my Indian parents about it, they told me that depression isn't real and that I need to stop making excuses. This is a real problem that we need to combat together.
Mustafa Alam where, why and how did muslims come into this conversation?
💖
Mustafa Alam You didn't have to make that assumption
@Raniya Abdul Qadir Just like Indians came into the conversation. You didn't ask when and how Asians came into the conversation? Stereotypes exist. Not 100% of times but for 70-75% of times its true.
Mustafa Alam Well yes, praying Salah is an absolute factor of stress relief. There are 2 types of depression. Chemical imbalances, which come from the brain directly, and societal, or existential reasons for depression. That’s why fools like you who’re oblivious to the spirituality factor of reliving depression indulge yourself in materialistic superficial things which help you distract yourselves from the basic life questions. No wonder celebrities kill themselves day in and out. No wonder an established country like the USA had 45000 suicides annually even though their living standards literally put them into the ranks of elite if compared to the rest of the world. No wonder from 1999 to 2019 30% increase has been discovered of suicides in USA alone. No wonder the drug intake is prominent in countries like the USA where you’re supposedly living the good life. No wonder celebrities numb themselves with drugs and alcohol constantly to escape from reality, although they have the money, fame, family etc. Imbeciles like you live a miserable life believing a simple pill will fix your depression. Lets see how that works out for you dirty maggot
To say that I missed this show would be the biggest understatement ever
Absolutely my African brother
As someone who’s been receiving therapy since I was 11 years old, I can also honestly say that, sometimes, none of the therapists that your insurance covers are good matches for you. I had one who ended up making me feel worse by drudging stuff up every appointment, and a couple years ago when I moved back to Kentucky, one of only two therapists available who was covered ended up being an evangelical ideologue who got his degree from a southern baptist school. Meanwhile, a lot of stuff I need therapy for came from closed-minded Christians.
When I lived in Boston, I had the opposite problem: I had a lot of therapists in my network but apparently EVERYONE in Boston had a therapist because it took me a whole year before one freed up.
Well, your last statement is why coverage is denied so much. Everyone needs a therapists and insurers know that. It’s a bottomless financial pit

In October 2019, I wanted to see a therapist, earliest was February 2020.
OMG that's awful. Hang in there honey.
This sums up my experience for the last four years. Anytime I tried using insurance, there’s been roadblock after roadblock. I now pay out of pocket for a psychiatrist and a psychologist that in total costs me $450. I send the claims for out of pocket deductible but I still get road blocks; most insurances want the claims mailed in or faxed and they’re usually with another company different from your actual insurance. (EX: the insurance I’m on now works with Optum Health and I can upload claims, but it takes still forever to process.) I would love to have an insurance cover my mental health but I gave up on it ever happening. I don’t make that much money so majority of my paycheck goes to student loans, rent, utility bills and mental health. It’s nice that mental health is getting destigmatized little by little, but until real change happens, talking about it is basically a fad.
Dear students, quite a lot of universities and colleges will have someone to help you out with your mental health issues for free. Please make use of those services.
Most colleges support a few sessions and then try to connect you to an outside provider
@@saronwolde270 And/Or are only available a few hours a day for certain days. That means if your lucky fo catch them outside your class hours (or skip class ) to see them.
@@saronwolde270 But if you use a university health plan, they may subsidize your sessions and your copays may be more manageable.
sometimes that might be questionable as well, though. it's hard to tell since things regarding universities and colleges and their public images, but sometimes they'll put you on suspension and then suddenly you'll be dropped out of college for not attending your classes.
I'm not trying to scare anyone but it's a thing you should research or think about before you actually go.
abc philomath Ice Bliss is right- while a lot of universities do offer services, they often are very limited (even if you’re at a place like my alma mater where there’s a top-tier hospital right on campus with a ton of docs doing psych residency there). Wait times for a first appointment may be upwards of a month- even if a student is in crisis. Crisis-focused resources often connect students to law enforcement or non-health professsionals (RAs, deans, etc), which can exacerbate the situation. Higher ed admins also may have policies in place where they keep tabs on ill students- not for their well-being, but to keep liability off the school. Students at places like Yale and UChicago have been kicked out of school and denied the ability to return due to psychiatric emergencies- even when no laws or school policies were broken and after students had completed treatment/were well. Students should always do research on their schools’ policies and be prepared to do some serious self-advocacy (or have someone close to help advocate for them).
This was honestly the best episode. That depression labyrinth was spot on too
This is another reason private healthcare should be abolished.
Not abolished, but the government have to make rules and regulations and force them to the insurance. And the government has to help those who can't afford the insurance fee.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my brother the same way, many years ago. You'll never fully understand it, but it does get easier with time. Please take care of yourself, and reach out for support when you need it.
May she rest in peace.
I pray for your peace of mind too

Yess Patriot Act team! Thank you for bringing more light to this topic! As a mental health professional it makes me very happy. Depression is very real, we need mental health days at our workplaces, we need better policy’s regarding insurance etc. People wonder why all these crazy things happen yet we have some of the highest depression rates in the western world. I don’t think ppl realize how much poor mental health effects, EVERYTHING ! So thank you for this as your first episode back ❤️ Much love.
But the head is still part of our bodies. It is a part of us lol. So it’s equally necessary to take care of it.
Just love Anna Kendrick. Her being his dream, pronouncing his name correctly....Hasan has made it.
The Intro Music is just the best
People shouldn't have to go through the insane hassle of dealing with scammy insurance companies, be denied over and over, get sicker and sicker, AND THEN have to go through the hassle of suing them, which is something lots of people can't do to begin with.
Insurance companies are unethical cesspots of capitalism.
When I was in inpatient care, I saw several people who were clearly still having issues get released from treatment after a very short amount of time. Almost no one stayed longer than a week, some less than that. Can't help to think its all because the insurance companies didn't care if people relapsed or committed suicide.
Anna Kendrick 😂😂 the way Hasan reacts to that being a dream 😂🖐🏽
Arya Naveen he’s cheating on Beena
@@anshshah8893 come on.. I know my homie, he's too innocent to cheat on Beena ❤️

This is some great work! Keep going team Patriot Act.
As an Australian, i feel extremely grateful for our health care system.
i've struggled with mental health all my life. it brings me genuine hope that conversations about it are becoming more and more mainstream. nobody should have to live undiagnosed and miserable, and with comprehensive healthcare reform, we might see the day nobody does.
❤️💕❤️💕❤️💕
I wonder how many kids can't talk to their parents about this.
I tried telling my mom I have recurring depression and anxiety, for which I've been to a psychiatrist and had as much therapy as I could get for free (major props to my uni for offering halfway decent services). Apparently it's a miracle I even got it without waiting months.
that intro tho!! iconic
thank you for curing my depression with anna kendrick hahahah
i can't believe he mentioned mcdonalds so many times yet failed to make a happy meal joke
Kudos to Mrs Joan Dickson for taking 1800 patients, I am an introvert.
It's 2019. People still don't talk about depression, stress and other mental issues seriously.
Boomers be like : " ItS aLl In OnLy In YoUr HeAd " . We need more awareness about it.
What irks me more is that some people will just have a bad day and label it depression or use it as an excuse for their bad behavior.. which is why people don't really believe those who actually need help, those who are suffering.. 😶 Depressed people never talk about suicide openly they're hurting & hiding but lack of sense in some people just desensitizes the word.
Okay Boomer
But is in your brain
@@josh44026 If your body is a computer, your brain is the operating system. Therapy is anti-malware.
We need more awareness, but we also need less negative repercussions if you admit you've had mental health problems in the past. People wouldn't say: "He broke his leg once, he's unfit for this work", but they say: "He was depressed/had burnout once, he's unfit for this."
Thanks for doing this episode.
We really need to bring mental health to the forefront.
This is SO well explained. Thank you, thank you! I’ve been dealing with this my whole life and still am. It’s so tough. I really appreciate that you covered this.
this is exactly why we need medicare for all. take the profit motive out of insurance, and actually cover people. and if everyone is on the same insurance, then you never have to worry about a doctor not being on your network because there's only one network and everyone's on it.
Danielle Spargo yesssss!!!!!!!
Exactly !!!! It’s ridiculous how we all can’t always go to the doctors we want to.
