Hi, Im Alex, im a knife maker and CZcamsr, based out of southern Pennsylvania and my youtube channel is Outdoors55. This channel started as an outdoor backpacking channel, but quickly grew into a knife/ knife making channel. Everything I do on my channel is family friendly. I primarily focus on knife / knife making videos but occasionally throw in something different. Thank you for watching!😀

Will definitely be making purchases from the new store. God bless you and your family.
Merry Christmas to you and your family as well Alex cheers Yogi Australia 🇦🇺🤙🤙
Not a scientist but I do have some observations. 1. The Latin guitar music definitely seemed to change the molecular structure of the metal. 2. “Real Life” heat treating is every bit as exciting as impeachment hearings. 3. That could be the greatest file in the world. 4. You should have a very Merry Christmas!
AH HAHAHAHA...!!! Now, that was funny! I don't care who you are! Merry Christmas!

Awesome 😂🤣
Heating depleted uranium probably isn't very safe.
Dude he wrapped it in the foil, it's fine.
@@scottecooke so that's why some people wear tinfoil hats; radiation. I always wondered
@@krknfmkr8919 that's a different foil. That one is for mind reading/control rays.
The foils probably harder than that "knife".
DU is a lot more expensive than this knife.
Can we get “is this even wood?” shirts please
Yes!! With stick figure looking up into tree.
Nah he needs a shirt that says "Is this even a shirt"
I am sure you would prefer, 'is this even soft dog crap?'
@@mynamejeff2647 is this even a comment?

Probably two types of scrap mild steels, like rebar and some t beam
You have a concept here for plenty of videos : purchasing and testing super cheap, shady knives.
Ebay, aliexpress ... a whole new world waiting for brave young men to explore
Dude. That's waxsteele! Very rare.
I think it's chinesium.
Agree
🤣
@@sokiel4112 if its from the middle east there's a chance that its old Stalinium.
The editing makes these videos 1000% better. Great editing
Next time, consider checking it with a magnet to make sure it's of a ferrous base.
You weren’t scared to reach into the garbage where there was a broken knife? You could have been cut by a chunk of cardboard or perhaps even the garbage bag. Although the knife may have gotten in the way of any possible sharp item or object.
wasnt the knife super dull
Aspect of the Breadloaf that’s why he needed to be careful not to get cut by any egg shells or cardboard. Perhaps leaving the broken bits of knife between himself and the cardboard. Better safe then sorry.
@@garlicbreadloaf That was literally the basis of his joke you breadloaf
Bad bad joke. Go home
I would like to see what color the filings burn in. It could give us some knowledge about what kind of wood the blade is made from.
I agree with your heat treating statement. I tell my customers "I make pretty blades with quality materials but you are paying me for my time and knowledge about steel".
What would be interesting, is buying some Damascus off ebay, (the blanks for knifemaking), from a couple different sources, and testing them. I've looked, but I honestly find most of them questionable.
As for this, it's quite possible they just gas forged and soaked it too much, and ended up removing the majority of the carbon from the steel.
which is why it's $25.... but, honestly... they should have paid you for taking it off their hands Alex👍👍
“Is this even wood?” Has me crying. Weeping. Please. More of this.
Ok I want to see a whole knife build video but completely from the tools point of view
Man you are a hero. Your channel basically explained all basics for me within 3 days of watching through. I dont think I want to build my own, but you helped me source out the right steels for knifes and tools I want. Thank you very much!
I love your channel its the only one on youtube Im aware of that has a creative genius tests that are so useful and entertaining
Loved this and the Damascus knife incident video, your editing is great. I too purchased a cheap central Asian stainless steel blank, as a style sample and yes I tested it and it bent like a piece of plastic but at least the plastic would have snapped, so is stayed bent at 90 degrees all the way to the bin.
I like your since of humour 👍
Thanks for taking the time to watch! Really appreciate it 👍👊
Same knife is currently $20.99 with free shipping. After this stunning review, expect they will double that price!
The way it broke on hrain in the 1st vid it almost remonds me of wrought iron. N wrought etches with nice pattern
I dig your comedy dude!
Oh my god, when he screamed, “Is this even wood?!” I nearly lost it
"Is this even wood?"
Should be on a quality shirt.
Man your vidoes crack me up. Perfect editing. And the sense of humor is my style. I've probably told you many times by now but keep doing what your doing. I consider this to be one of my Christmas presents hahaha so thank you. And merry Christmas or happy holidays or whatever suits your fancy.
Amazing... glad you followed thru with testing. Very interesting!
Excellent video! Lesson learned for us all. Thanks for taking one for the team! I went to your web site and will be shopping there after my credit card stops smoking from the Christmas frenzy! Merry Christmas to you & yours!
Heat treatment is the most important aspect of a knife. But it's the thing people know the least about. So many people deal with poor heat treatments and don't even realize it. They think as long as it can get an edge the HT is acceptable.
Well it IS one of the trickiest parts of knife making, in my humble opinion
Eh medieval crucible steel wasn't heat treated and they used swords. You just can't abuse your knife like a lot of people do.
@@Bourikii2992 it was air hardend or differentially hardened
@@Bourikii2992they would have water quenched..
Your videos are top notch. Great comedic value. But also great educational content as well.
Probably the best knife channel on the tube. Plz come back.
Very cool video. I remember the original "cheap Demascus" video and wish I had found this follow up sooner. Hope you return to production soon 👍
Awesome thanks for affirming my guess and curiosity. Have a good one buddy.
I'm new to your channel but I'm glad it came across my feed. You got talent and your vids are bad ass bro, in so many ways! Def stickin around!
I’m not sure which one of “you” is funnier?! But you made me cry for real...
This and your other Damascus video were very informative. My cousin almost bought one of those cheap knives at the renaissance faire for $50 (maybe $100). His father talked him out of it, and I took him to a forge to make his own RR spike knife for free.
I bought one of those damascus knives too from Afganastan. When I opened it at the Post Office it had a huge nick in the blade. It turned out to be a ornament!
Cool video 😎👍. Thanks again!
I bought one that looks very similar at a gun show in Dallas and it was not hardened either. It split on the edge between 2 layers and when I tried to sharpen it with a diamond sharpener there were huge flakes coming off that would ignite and burn up like ferrocerium.
Hi. Greetings from Indonesia. I've been watching some of your videos and many lessons taken, especially about the heat treatment process.
One video that interests me is when you forge a rebar into a scary sharp knife. In Indonesia here, as far as I know, most of our blacksmiths use rebar for daily work knives, blades, stakes and others. The only difference is in the heat treatment process.
Now, about your video on forging that rebar, it's a very nice video and I wonder if you would make other videos of knife making with forging technic.
So are you going to leave any type of review for this Ebay seller? Maybe warning people on your finds?
Something like "even at $25 this is a rip-off?"
No point, no one with an average IQ or higher is buying $25 damascus knives on ebay.
@@crossbreedpriscilla8966 well... i know people who buy cheap things on ebay even if it is garbage... their argument is that they can buy another one if it gets damaged and in the end it is cheaper than buying a more costly one... that that is bs, is somthing that they don't want to hear...
Its a wish product
Should tell the people that the 25$ gift card they used to buy it was sharper and won’t brake as easily as the knife.
I live how easily the supposed layers separated lol it would literally take an entire reforging in order to get the layers to properly bond to one another and then maybe then it would be able to heat treat or harden to a reasonable hrc and be used as a blade steel lol
I just watched this video and a few more. You have a new subscriber your videos are such high quality and the content is good, rare to find those two together. I can tell you put a lot of effort into these.
Thank you for the sub! It's definitely appreciated 👍👊👊
Hello from somerset county. I know you said southern pa. I’d love to see your operation. I want to get into the hobby. Thanks and keep up the great videos.
Great video. Hope you are having a Merry Christmas.
very nice research.. great video.. thanks
That last video was gold. Shit had me rolling.
Just commented of this on ur old video, checking it out now
Holy sh*t. You actually went through with it. We were kidding. LOL. *AWESOME*
I love your video style bro! Make more knife making videos!!!!
You answered my question after the last video I wanted to know if you could harden it!!
Love your vids man
I thoroughly enjoyed these two videos. The only reason I questioned its magnetic properties is because it doesn't quite look ferrous. Of course an acid etch will do some greying externally except that it didn't look right when you broke it up. Somethings just not right there.
Question is do they keep track of Batch numbers for Q.C. wherever they made that? Can you imagine a Bridge made of that mystery metal?
Awesome thank you!
What heat treating looks like in real life! 😂😂😂😂😂
Pakistan has a lot of scrap yards were they will recycle/reuse literally anything that's scrap-able. My guess is the knife was made from literally scrap metal from a scrap yard. Melt a bunch of random car parts, industrial machinery, etc, down and make a "knife". That's probably how they got the Damascus part, from different scrapped pieces made of slightly different steel.
Awesome I was hoping you did this video. Also the scary thing is you can actually get a really good edge on mild steel (it won't last long though). So whatever they did to it actually made it worse than mild steel.
Thanks for that!
Thanks for the follow-up M8..... subbed.
That stuff's like hot dog metal. Only the manufacturer knows what's ground up in that mess. It's likely close to pot metal, zinc, aluminum... to supplant the lack of steel on hand. It would be interesting to check it's magnetic qualities vs. the claimed metallurgy. (If it's even magnetic) (it's probably wood)
Ohh Boy!! That's pak car bumper metal... I know that cause I had one some years ago, courtesy of my uncle!!! 😵😵 Mery Christmas! 🎉🎉🎄🎄
The knife remains never should have left the trashcan, but it was nice to see if it was real steel or not. I also liked how you reused the best part of the knife video, i enjoyed it much more like this.
Perhaps this is the beginning of a craze in Damascus 'steel' butter knives?
Hey man. I commend you for making knives with a 4x36.. I have tried it, and the machine is to underpowered for my impatient ass. So good job.
That knife makes mtech knives look like top quality lol
That answers that question
I was always wondering, how is the life of Tongs...now I know, thanks for that Alex :)
thank you!
ok, now i'm no longer in love with my beautiful $35 Pakistani Damascus steel knife. So now I don't mind throwing it at things or using it for a pry bar. Damn, bone handle and brass fittings were so beautiful.
All I want for Christmas is OUTDOORS55 knife making skills baaaabaay!
Still soft as a chocolate bar. Thanks for the video!
Could you get another one of the eBay Gems and see what it would take to make it a usable knife? (If possible)
I fell for the Ebay knife also. I could never get an edge on it. I thought it was just me.
Do you have any videos reviewing 1095 sheet stock for cutting blanks? I bought 2 "custom knives" that were made from it.
Merry Christmas 🎄
Hi Alex I just wanted to ask if you can show us what you would think of the tungsten sharpeners for sharpens best on youtube
My ignorance is bliss...wish I found your channel a few weeks ago!!
Unfortunately I unknowingly bought two knife blanks on Amazon. One from Cold Land and the other from Buck n Bear, both damascus steal both a product of Pakistan.
The one from BnB I'm returning tomorrow.
The cold land blank I already put a handle on, so I'm stuck with it.
Caveat emptor
Both
I guess I won’t be buying a eBay knife thanks for the video 🤠👍
Cool man merry Xmas
P L I E R C A M ! !
An innovation in cinematic technique.
Please review the Spyderco Paramilitary 2 knife.
I ordered a Morakniv because of your last video. I can't wait to slice my ear off!
This video demonstrates the beautiful dynamic of why the internet was created...
I laughed, really a lot hard, at the last, video. 😄
I've heard the term "pot steel". All the crap thats left over after proper steel us made, gets thrown into a pot and then 'single use' steel is extruded. Any steel framing around machinery in a container from China is single use. It might as well be cast iron.
Liked the "Plier Cam" lol
Merry Christmas!
You could have done some spark testing to learn more about the content. Sparks are fun. Sparks are your friend. Sparks carry information about the content of metals. Quick, cheap, easy to come by information.
Or you could have test if it was steel with a magnet
That's boring and too easy. I prefer to do things as difficult as possible.😉
Be a pretty short video.
Junk angle iron from a hardware store will stick to a magnet. So will 1095. There is a difference in how strong the attraction is...but this test is far more definitive
Not all steels are magnetic enough to notice
Nickel and cobalt are also magnetic
5:07 “gives you an edge” 😉😉😉
Hope you left an honest review
Maybe try a water quench? Great video man!
I didn't know if you'll even read this , but I have a question maybe you could tackle in a later video. Question is , how do you patina a stainless steel knifeblade?? I would like to see a video on this. I've seen plenty on carbon blades but not many on stainless.
Tin & lead. Perfect for cutting food !
Hi 👋🏻
In new to your channel and i love the way you make videos and the information you give .
Im going to make a chef knife i wanted it to be 1095 steel i know its a difficult steel to work with eaven i dont have a forge im going to improvise, i have done just one knife bushcraft nesmuk style it came out pretty good Spring leaf metal .
I wanted to ask can i find 1095 steel in scrap yard ?? Im looking in internet but cant find any information
I was looking for any car parts that have that kind of steel
If you can help I really appreciate it many thanks and marry Christmas 🎄
Omg you just made my day 😂
Question? When your treating a blade in the oven how long do you let it soak for? Would you put the blade in as it ramps up or wait for it to get to temp then put it in then soak? I just got an oven can't find any videos that touches on that subject .
I love your humour. You should call your channel _"You suck at knife making"._ (That's totally a compliment, BTW).
Very funny ! you crack me up!
Hek yea man I was on a Cliffhanger waiting for this video....no was like is he gonna do one or what man
Fastidiously accomplished sir.
now i'm no blacksmith but every hardening heat treating i have ever seen done required the metal be heated to a glowing red hot and then quenched in oil, what you did appears to be "tempering" where by a super hardened/shatter-able blade is slightly softened and relaxed to make it less shatter-able without removing most of the hardening. see you need the sudden drop in temperature to cause the metal to crystallize
go watch forged in fire, man at arms reloaded or any other knife forging video
I did everything correctly 😂 I literally show the quench.
Watch the video again.
This is a very delicate knife, you need to wrap it in bubble wrap, and when you use it, leave it in the bubble wrap, it'll protect the blade and make a sharper cut
