  • This 1100KG 900HP SR20 powered Nissan S15 Silvia was easy to pick from the crowd as one of the standouts at the latest World Time Attack Challenge as not just being good from afar, but even more exceptional upon closer inspection.
    Owner and builder Charles Warland took some time out on race day to chat to us about the Dream Projects S15 Silvia build including some of the reasoning behind it’s 2.2L SR20VE power plant over other options like the RB which Charles is also familiar with via his RB260Z build. Sitting 51mm back from its original location as per the Open Class rules, the SR20 runs the Nissan P12 Primera head and a billet block to produce 900HP from 34 PSI of boost via a BorgWarner EFR 9174. PMC Race Engines have been on board with this great package, and internally CP-Carrillo pistons, a Kelford Cam and Nitto 2.2L stroker kit handle the beating flawlessly which is an impressive feat for a new build and testament to the quality of the build.
    Charles also discusses why the GT Auto Garage prepped S15 uses a smaller turbo that what it could handle, and how Time Attack design legion Barry Lock (Of MCA Hammerhead and Mighty Mouse CRX fame) planned the build with Charles along every step of the way to make sure things were done right and done once in regards to chassis and aero setup. Driving the car to 3rd place in the Open Class with a time of 1:29.174 was FWD lap record holder Rob “Mighty Mouse” Nguyen who will be looking to crack that 1:28 mark in the RWD next time around we’re sure.
    At just under 1100KG with 1000KG of downforce at 180kph the SR20 setup is certainly pulling its weight to keep momentum. With that said, a focus on the overall balance of the car and not just outright power it is well capable of the task and the change in rear suspension from a multi-link setup to a double-wishbone one helps ensure traction is maintained where required via the Hollinger RD6 sequential gearbox. A good range of sensors have been fitted for data logging purposes and with the help of the MoTeC M150, PDM30, and C127 dash help dial the car in to achieve faster and faster lap times.

    I love it when teams are willing to talk about the technical stuff of their cars, since it's very unlikely that someone else will be able to replicate it.
    I mean there is a lot of little things that go into building the engine and a good setup that is not visible by the naked eye, like internal clearances, fuel delivery, compression ratio, cooling system and more importantly the map tune that makes it all work together.
    Guys need to stop sweating it and just be more open to share some of the knowledge.

    Awesome to see that they’re running an electric water pump because my first question was if you’re gonna be running the VET head usually most guys run them up to 10,000 RPMs and at that engine speed typically you have to go with either an electric water pump or an under drive pulley in this case an electric water pump is if I’m not mistaken used in the bottom left below the blow off valve from what I can see Id just like to know what kind of set up he used for it because I’m trying to think of A similar solution for my SR which will be running around 9k rpm if I can. The camshafts rockers and almost all the rest of the Valvetrain are to be cryo treated since I opted for the det head.

    I'm more interested in the cost of building cars, and how to get into racing as cheap as possible.
    It would be great to talk about the cost effectiveness of mods in different areas of the car, and which would be the best for someone that has no prior experience and minimum budget like 1000 dollars. It's still very educational to talk about these high end builds, but the majority of us can benefit more from entry level-focused videos, but done in a knowledgable and professional fashion such as this one.
    And again, another smashing job on the video, hopefully I can see more videos on entry level motorsports soon!

    These time attack lads are joke, it’s taken them 15 years and another 400bhp to go as quick as a race lap 500bhp spec single seater. I mean that’s 15 years of tyre, electronics, aero and chassis development and they still can’t get the lap times - the early 90’s TS-010 was about 10 seconds faster and that’s 1992. It just illustrates the massive gulf between the aftermarket and performance industries versus actual educated motorsports professionals. People need to learn that bolting shit to car and throwing boost at it doesn’t make laptimes. Maybe a video with some actual proven motorsports chassis engineers could be a good eye opener.

    • @hpa101
      @hpa101  Před 4 lety

      These Time Attack cars do not run racing slicks and must keep some aspects of a production car, given those aspects are relaxed compared to some other classes. They're hardly comparable to a big budget (even that one from 15 years ago would have 5 times the money pumped into it as this car has at least) purpose built single seater with a driver that has many hours seat time in that specific chassis, in my opinion, but you're of course welcome to your own 😎
      If Time Attack starts allowing single seaters and slicks at least and they can let rip for lap after lap, which I doubt, then it will be more 'apples to apples' - Taz.

    • @rickybobby7660
      @rickybobby7660 Před 4 lety

      High Performance Academy. Granted but it’s not really the point I was trying to make, laptimes should be derived from solid mathematical fundamentals and a higher understanding of vehicle dynamics rather that bolting on the best of what the aftermarket can churn out and upping the output. All things being equal time attack cars do what they do well but it would be nice to see how effective a more academic approach could be. As an aside - Spec single seaters, no mater what the level aren’t really about big budgets and development costs, just cost effective speed. If, as a race car chassis constructor you’re only competitor is yourself then it’s not in the business’s best interest to make it as fast as possible rather cheap, reliable and robust.

    • @hpa101
      @hpa101  Před 4 lety

      I think you should watch a few more videos of some of the builds on our channel, including the interview with Andrew Brilliant. There is certainly a bit more to it, assuming that you don't in-fact run a road turned Time Attack car that is performing to the single seater level you expect that is. Bit tongue in cheek that remark and I don't mean to insult, but it is one thing to look at something and state how easy it should be, and it is another to actually go out and do it in the real world.
      The lap time these cars are chasing around Sydney Motorsport Park are still impressive when compared to the touring car class cars, which are big money albeit more regulated, but also not single seaters.
      Essentially, we're going to have to agree to strongly disagree with each-other here haha, but that's OK =) - Taz.
