    This song gets a whole new dimension when performed by gay men, suddenly the lyrics become the struggle of gays in this world, to belong, to be part of it. The emotions listening to this men singing with so much truth and with feelings that come from their personal paths and struggles in life are overwhelming.

      Every human struggles in their life, & regardless of their sexual preference. I'm gay, it wasn't overwhelming. It's some straight people who are overwhelmed by it all, struggling with their homophobia. That's how I see it. I am a Stonewall baby boomer.

    "Different is nice, but it sure isn't pretty/ Pretty is what it's about/ I never met anyone who was different who couldn't figure that out/"
    Those lines sound even more heartbreaking coming from a gay man.

    • @PrincessOye22
      @PrincessOye22 Před 9 lety +1

      William Craig They're gay?

    • @WillScarlet16
      @WillScarlet16 Před 9 lety +6

      They're men in tutus singing show tunes traditionally sung by women.
      You figure it out.

    • @PrincessOye22
      @PrincessOye22 Před 9 lety +35

      William Craig I'm sorry, I must've missed the part where being homosexual now means wearing clothing and singing a song.
      I thought it meant you liked your own gender, or even that it meant you're happy. Silly me thinking that.

    • @WillScarlet16
      @WillScarlet16 Před 9 lety +10

      Musical theater is a major part of the gay community, and this song's lyrics are all completely changed by the fact that a man is singing it. It's pretty obvious they're making a statement, and not just 'singing a song.'

    • @PrincessOye22
      @PrincessOye22 Před 9 lety +10

      William Craig Doesn't mean they have to be gay. Look at me; I'm straight and like musical theatre :/
      They do this for plenty of things. Cellblock tango for example. You're reading into what has not been said. They show this much passion for everything.
      Until there's *actual* evidence of their homosexuality (like, say, maybe them kissing a boy or confessing their love for the same sex?), I don't think you should presume they are because of a song and clothes.
      I wear my brothers' clothes and don't change song lyrics so I may end up singing about a girl. Am I lesbian >.>?

  • @JosephStJames2000

  • @mcmanpa
    @mcmanpa Před 7 lety +185

    There’s a lovely balance here. The song, a trio for three female voices, will always be an emotionally charged recall of unhappy childhoods relieved by the escapism offered by ballet and its repertoire of happy endings. Performed instead by men, it would be easy for the trio to tip into a sad reflection of young gay boys struggling with both their emerging identity and their liking for what is often regarded as a girlish and girl-dominated activity. But the pantomime humour of men in drag manages to stave off the worst of the maudlinness and I appreciate Blake Bowden trying to keep the final “Daddy, I would love to dance” from being the tear-jerker the writers intended to be.
    One poster here takes the irony one step further and reflects on how it is even harder (or heartbreaking, as he called it) for an unattractive gay youth to fit in and find love, alluding perhaps to today’s widespread image consciousness amongst the young, and how a gay “plain jack”-looking boy finds it even harder to be gay, a dancer and happy at the same time.

    • @Arkelk2010
      @Arkelk2010 Před 7 lety +15

      I think what makes it work so well is that the actors/singers played this with absolute conviction--not with a wink or hint of camp.

    The beauty of these things comes from the honesty of not giving in to the cheap laugh of camping it up (look at the guy who sings AND I AM TELLING YOU - flawless!). The middle guy here almost gives in to that urge to just play it for cheap laughs, but happily resists. The result is much better (and comical) for that.
    The second guy should learn to count.
    The first guy is brilliant.

    Breaks my composure and makes me cry every time. Too much to identify with here and too connected to the era in which this was created.
    Now with men in the three roles i am more heavily impacted than I had expected.
    Simply beautiful tragedy if i may be so "French" in my review. It seems contradictory but it more accurately Point/Counterpoint in music, lyrics and a minimalistic bit of elegant dance.

    Sheila:
    Daddy always thought that he married beneath him
    That's what he said, that's what he said
    When he proposed he informed my mother
    He was probably her very last chance
    And though she was twenty-two
    Though she was twenty-two
    Though she was twenty-two
    She married him
    Life with my dad wasn't ever a picnic
    More like a "come as you are."
    When I was five I remember my mother
    Dug earrings out of the car
    I knew they weren't hers, but it wasn't
    Something you'd want to discuss
    He wasn't warm
    Well, not to her
    Well, not to us
    But everything was beautiful at the ballet
    Graceful men lift lovely girls in white
    Yes, everything was beautiful at ballet
    Hey! I was happy... at the ballet
    spoken: That's when I started class
    Up a steep and very narrow stairway
    Sheila and Bebe:
    To the voice like a metronome
    Up a steep and very narrow stairway
    Sheila: It wasn't paradise
    Bebe: It wasn't paradise
    Sheila and Bebe: It wasn't paradise
    Sheila: But it was home
    Bebe:
    Mother always said I'd be very attractive
    When I grew up, when I grew up
    "Diff'rent, " she said, "With a special something
    And a very, very personal flair."
    And though I was eight or nine
    Though I was eight or nine
    Though I was eight or nine
    I hated her
    Now, "Diff'rent" is nice, but it sure isn't pretty
    "Pretty" is what it's about
    I never met anyone who was "diff'rent"
    Who couldn't figure that out
    So beautiful I'd never lived to see
    But it was clear
    If not to her
    Well then to me
    Bebe and Maggie:
    That everyone is beautiful at the ballet
    Every prince has got to have his swan
    Yes, everyone is beautiful at the ballet
    Maggie: Hey!
    Bebe: I was pretty
    Sheila: At the ballet
    Sheila, Bebe, and Maggie:
    Up a steep and very narrow stairway
    To the voice like a metronome
    Up a steep and very narrow stairway
    Maggie: It wasn't paradise
    Bebe: It wasn't paradise
    Sheila: It wasn't paradise
    Sheila, Bebe, and Maggie: But it was home
    Maggie:
    I don't know what they were for or against, really, except each other. I mean, I was born to save their marriage but when my father came to pick my mother up at the hospital he said: "Well, I thought this was going to help. But I guess it's not." Anyway, I did have a fantastic fantasy life. I used to dance around the living room with my arms up like this. My fantasy was that it was an Indian Chief... And he'd say to me, "Maggie, do you wanna dance?" And I'd say, "Daddy, I would love to dance."
    Bebe: But it was clear
    Sheila: When he proposed
    Maggie: That I was born to help their marriage and when
    Sheila: That's what he said
    Bebe: That's what she said
    Maggie: I used to dance around the living room
    Sheila: He wasn't warm
    Bebe: Not to her
    Maggie:
    It was an Indian chief and he'd say
    "Maggie, do you wanna dance?"
    And I said, "Daddy, I would love to"
    Everything was beautiful at the ballet
    Raise your arms and someone's always there
    Yes, everything was beautiful at the ballet
    At the ballet
    At the ballet!
    Sheila, Bebe, and Maggie:
    Yes everything was beautiful at the ballet.
    Maggie: Hey!
    Bebe: I was pretty
    Sheila: I was happy
    Maggie: "I would love to..."
    Sheila, Bebe, and Maggie:
    At the ballet

    I’ll never be able to hear this again, without hearing the lyrics through the lives of gay men. 💝
