Demons and Wizards is an absolutely terrific album. It's my favorite Uriah Heep album. They can rock hard as well as play acoustic music. They've been through some lineup changes over the years but this is classic Uriah Heep. They are still active today and their current lineup is quite good. Living the Dream and Wake the Sleeper are a couple of terrific recent albums.

Uriah Heep has been around for 51 years now. They are still performing and releasing new material. So it is hard to pin down just a few songs from a 51 year career, like 25 studio albums, countless live albums and compilation albums. I am 60 years old and have loved them since i first heard them in 1972. Incidentally, The Wizard was the first song I ever heard from them! I wish I was discovering them like you are now. I envy you and what the next few years of hearing UH for the first time holds for you. Enjoy!

You should definitely do "Easy Livin'" from the same album. Then there's the title track from the album "The Magician's Birthday" and from the album Sweet Freedom the song "Stealin'".
The keyboard plyer, Ken Hensley, released a solo album in 1973 called "Proud Words on a Dusty Shelf" that you might enjoy. I mention this one more for your own reference. Whether you do a reaction or not is up to you but if you are digging Uriah Heep you might enjoy Hensley's "Proud Words"
The album covert art for Demons & Wizards was done by Roger Dean who also did quite a bit of work for the prog rock legends Yes.

Uriah Heep released their 1st album in 1970, Gypsy was already a hit in Germany with its legendary keyboard-intro-riff. English music press predicted a short career, Uriah Heep is still there with 1 original member, Mick Box on Guitar. They released 6 more albums with original singer David Byron, out of which Demons and Wizards is the best in its entirety, but somehow they are all good. For Nick as guitarplayer: a must know is the titletrack of Magicians Birthday.... the guitar solo will make you pick up your guitar and pedal and try to play it :-) have fun. Other great tunes are Look at yourself, Easy Livin, Circle of Hands, Sunrise, Dreamer etc. If you ask somebody in Germany about Uriah Heep 9 out of 10 say: oh, Lady in Black ... in turn off my radio, when they play this song :-)

Yet another fantastic 60's-70's group that took their name from great works of literature. Cool back story about your mother. I'm 62, so all that classic rock is my roots. Keep in mind that at the time, that heavy sound (Zeppelin, Who, Cream, Hendrix, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath) was relatively new. All those bands mentioned were contemporaries, but they all had such a unique twist to those instruments, riffs and progressions. There was nothing like it before. Nothing to compare it to. For most of us hearing that music "fresh," it was all completely mind blowing, discovering new worlds of sound and imagery.

My favourite group, so thanks for this. Other songs you might like are Stealing, July Morning and Look at Yourself. Even their modern day albums are top notch.

I always wondered why this song hasn’t been picked up in a fantasy/sci-fi soundtrack. Maybe some day.

I posted a comment suggesting this, but I see you already did it -- your mom has great taste in music. I loved this song from the first time I heard it. Just in case you were curious, the name of the band came from the character in the Charles Dickens novel David Copperfield.

I read in a Ken Hensley(Heep's keyboardist, songwriter) interview, that the squeal you hear in the background, is a tea kettle whistling, tuned to "c". All this time I thought it was a keyboard, but thought something strange about that fluctuating note, anything works when it comes to music I guess. If Tom Waits, can bang on a toilet, than Heep can use the tea kettle.

Was a big Uriah Heep fan back in the 70's. Songs like Easy Lovin', Sweet Lorraine, Look At Yourself. Really good, semi prog style songs.

Great reaction guys. Please do Steely Dan. They are a very unique band that I am sure you will love. The song Kid Charlemagne has one of the greatest guitar solos. Peg and Black Friday are also great songs.

I've literally only heard one Steely Dan song before and Nick hasn't heard any!! This is a MUST on our list since we started. We'll cover him though! Thanks for the support! :) - Lex

@@NicknLex You guys will love them, because they are their own genre. Their older stuff is more classic rock and blues, then they morphed in a jazz, fusion with some r&b, regaee and pop. Very cool band. Also they have some pretty sarcastic, funny lyrics also.

You need to know that back then albums were a story. You had to listen to the entire album to get the story. The albums for this story are Demons & Wizards and Magicians Birthday.

Uriah Heep were not well known in the US, were quite big in the UK and were huge in Germany.

One aspect I like about this band is their harmonies. Also they used mellotrons at times. On their "Salisbury" album they made a long piece using an orchestra, I think it's better than Pink Floyd's 'Atom Heart Mother'. Favorite song: Stealin'

You have to listen to the entire lp, but particularly the last 2 tracks-- Paradise which segues into The Spell- together. Magnificent. Then on to the Magicians Birthday with the crazy wah wah infested lengthy solo on the title track. Fantastic.
