I had just discovered Uriah Heep during the pandemic only to have Lee Kerslake die a month later, then followed by Ken Hensley. I was saddened to hear of their deaths as I just got to know of their talent. They’re now amongst my all time favorite bands. Great band all around. David Byron was an incredible singer.
I was a big fan of this band back in the early 70's. In 1973 I went off on an all expense paid vacation to Southeast Asia courtesy of Uncle Sam. When I got back I had a bunch of stuff I had to deal with. Many years went by. The wife left me after 17 years of marriage, the kids grew up and went their own way. In a fit of nostalgia I purchased a turntable and went to vintage records stores trying to rebuild my collection I had in my youth. I went into one store in Toledo, Ohio and was promptly greeted by a twenty something young lady who pleasantly asked, "Can I help you find something?" I responded, "Yes, do you, by chance, have Uriah Heep?" Somewhat indignantly she said, "NO, that's just the way I walk !!"
Mick Box's band . He's still jamming. The rest of the band original band member's from the 70's have all passed away. David, Ken, Gary, Lee. Loved that line up.
After hearing songs from Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin in 1970 - at the age of nine! - all the bands in radio like the "B-boys" (Beatles, Beach Boys, Byrds, Bee Gees and and and) were immediately "oldies" (but goldies) for me. Love Sabbath, Purple and Zeppelin too, but Heep was, is and will always be my favourite rock-band! While the Byron-era is unmatched, there are some great albums and songs 'til today.
Isn't amazing that they are still putting out such great music. I hope they come back to the u.s just once more. I see them in Sellersville p.a. and they always put on a great show
My favorite period was the Thain, Byron years ..... however my favorite Heep album of all time was LOOK AT YOURSELF. That was the best. The whole album a masterpiece and powerful.
I followed Uriah Heep in the early days. Salisbury was the first album I got and I saw them on tour 4 times, the last was the Return to Fantasy tour. They were my "signature" band. I lost interest after David Byron's departure from this world, it was devastating. I had all of the David Byron/Uriah Heep albums as well as David's solo albums. David was/is, one of the legendary rock singers there ever was. 13:05 - That's kind of ironic that John Lawton died on my birthday, 2 years ago, June 29, 2021.
I hitchhiked to Chicago with three other guys and we saw them at the Amphitheatre right when Sweat Freedom came out in 1973. It was one of the high points of my youth and a great time.
As a teen i was quite a fan of Uriah Heep. I liked them even more than DeepPurple and maybe even Led Zeppelin.That was in the early Seventies. Then somehow my focus shifted to other styles of music. It was around fourty years ago I studied albums like Salisbury and Of Demons and Wizards more carefully. And I was blown away by the quality of their music. Fast forward another twenty years. I was attending a Festival with old Rock bands. When I read the name Uriah Heep I thought: "It is tragic, those guys still have to tour to earn their living". And this time my daughter joined the concert. She is a great guitar player. (By now she is a professional musician). She had a broken foot and still attended the concert. We were early for the show and went to a place inside the stadium complex and we ordered a snack. And who were the only people there: All the members of Uriah Heep. Those guys were so down to earth and ate a simple meal and ordering the few things that were still available. They did not go to the VIP lounge to eat as they could have. Then Mick Box stepped over the crutch of my daughter and apologized. That was our chance. The entire band was giving their autographs on our concert poster. After that we witnessed a concert that I will never forget. Those old men performed with a quality and fire in their heart that blew us away: They could sing live like I never heard before in a Rock concert. Even the giant Kerslake had a great voice and hit every note on the spot. Those old men blew all the other performers away. They LOVED what they were doing. Seeing the grin on Mick's face made me believe this guy will perform on until they nearly have to carry him on stage like they did with Muddy Waters in Montreux.
When David Byron left Uriah Heep, I considered the band to be no more. They just never sounded the same without David Byron. Demons & Wizards was by far their best album. Cheers from eastern TN
I agree. Have u heard of heep freedom? It's a Hungarian cover band preserving the vintage sound. The singer comes very close to Byron. Hands down way better than heep current line up.
Very eavy very umble is a masterpiece. Box had a heavy sound on this album, like Look at yourself. The two heaviest albums released in those early years
Loved the early Heep music, especially Salisbury and Look at Yourself. Paul Newton, the original bassist, is criminally underrated. If you want to hear some epic bass riffs, listen to the title track from Salisbury.
Gary Thain was the reason I picked up the bass some 40 years ago and he is still my favourite bassist. Then there's John Wetton, Trevor Bolder, Bob Daisley to add into the mix. All world class players that have been a huge influence on legions of bass player's.

As for my favorite Heep lineup, I'd have to say Box, Hensley, Byron, Kerslake and Thain for their albums Uriah Heep Live, Demon and Wizards, The Magicians Birthday, and Sweet Freedom, although I also love Salisbury. I actually got to see them perform live twice at Riverfront Coliseum, Cincinnati Ohio, sometime in between my very first concert on 4/20/77 "An Evening with Led Zeppelin" and The Who on 12/3/1979 (may the 11 rockers R.I.P., they are not forgotten). Judas Priest and Uriah Heep opened before Rush at one concert, and they opened for Jethro Tull at the other concert I attended. At Rush's general admission concert, the only open seats my friend and I could find were behind the stage, which still had many open seats available. With it being such a lousy view of the concert, we basically had the entire row to ourselves, but could still see about 1/2 of the stage below all of the speakers set up. After Heep did their last song and were walking off stage, which was only about 10 yards below us, when Kenny Hensley walked by, I stood up and yelled "Circle of Hands" joining my hands together in a circle over my head. Kenny heard it and looked up at me right before disappearing into the tunnel going backstage. I was hoping they'd play it for their encore song, which Cincy's applause demanded, but oddly, Kenny was the only band member to come back out on the stage to perform it. Alone, in a solid red pantsuit with his 12-string guitar, he played "Lady in Black" to end their performance for the night (so Rush could take the stage). This time however, as Kenny walked below us, he looked up directly at me, smiled and waved as he went backstage. We both stood up, yelling and applauding, and I felt kind of proud that a rock legend had just acknowledged/waved at both of us. Great memory. And today is only yesterday's tomorrow.
Saw them in '75, Huntsville, AL. They did a good job. Just a year before that I plagiarized a few lines from Rainbow Demon and inserted into my high school College Preparatory English senior thesis. I (and The Heep) got an A+ on it! I was pretty sure Mrs. Graves wasn't going home rockin' to The Magician's Birthday. Thanks guys.
URIAH HEEP is the best rock band ever. On my rock-pop piano covers channel there are two of his great songs, Easy Livin' and Lady in Black, and URIAH HEEP is next to and on the same level as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, Pink Floyd and Deep Purple. They deserve it!!!

izitso. mojo Same age. I've got a Roger Dean art book. I never realised he did so many album covers. His first was GUN "Race With The Devil" 1969. I was a spray painter and plaguerised some of his work on my mates' panel vans.
The most underrated band of all time. Gary Thain is the most fantastic bass player you have never heard. They should be in the Hall of Fame. But so should Dinosaur Jr., which truly saddens me.

Another GREAT BAND and I believe have all passed but Mick who continues on today. They had the right recipe, great musicianship, great songs and a unique and powerful front man. David Byron stood right alongside his british brethren in greatness, Ozzy, Ian Gillan, Robert Plant, Ian Anderson, Greg Lake and on and on. Salisbury, Look At Yourself, Magicians Birthday, Demon's and Wizards, Live, these guys were an important part of an important time in music "Uriah Heep" 👍

@@aschule5684 you should have seen them in 1971 or 1973 or even 1977 when Journey opened up for them. A totally different group then. But it's good you got to see them at all. I love Uriah Heep I had all of their albums and I saw them in concert with Queen Kansas and mahogany rush. That was right after Gary thain. Four groups for $3.95. You've got to love the early 70s.
My favorite era was in the early 70s, Gypsy is my favorite song. I’ve always thought the best thing about them at that time was not only were they a real heavy metal rock band but also their backup vocals.
It's by far the worst album of the Byron era. The songs are very bad produced. Only the title-track "Wonderworld" is a brilliant song and well produced, but not the rest of the album. If you love this album - congratulation - but I was sooo disappointed after buying and hearing it 50 years ago!
Everyone has an opinion. The Shadow And The Wind ... beautiful. Dreams .... So Tired .... Really good. Other good contributions as well to the Heep catalog as well. A Bluesy I Won't Mind ... really, really good. There's been way worse songs released by the band. Poor production and lame cover .... yes ... but some really good songs on this and way better than the song Wonderworld ... which is pretty good.
The wizard is probably my favorite. I also love Blind Eye which seems to rarely get mentioned. I saw them in the early 70s with Queen Kansas mahogany rush at one of those General seating far $3.95 shows
The whole video is a crock of crap. Right from the beginning he starts talking about people without introducing who they were. Add in the mispronunciations and it becomes unwatchable
I played keys, including a Hammond and souped up Lesile speaker back in the 70's with a really great band. It was fun playing Uriah Heep, DP, Yes, and others. I always loved their rock and roll medley on the live album too. I saw Ken Hensley at the NAMM show in Anaheim in the 1990's and boy was he wired on something. He was gyrating and talking non-stop. I wanted to try and get a few words to him, but I gave up. He had quite a presence.
Still have the ticket stub when I saw them In Columbia SC around 73. Don't remember who else was on the bill. I still have Demon's & Wizards; Magicians Birthday and Live on the LPs I bought back then. Saw some great concerts in the 70s and prices were $8-$12 for a concert. One of the most unusual line- ups I saw there, was Golden Earring, Blue Oyster Cult and Lynyrd Skynyrd on the same show.
I saw Uriah Heep with John Wetton on bass in 1976, I was 14 years old the ticket cost 7 dollars and it was a very good show and I consider it still one of the best concerts I have seen in my life
David Byron played in a band called Rough Diamond w/ ex Humble Pie guitarist Clem Clemson after leaving Heep. . Really good stuff. End Of The Line was a great song. He was an amazing vocalist. Thain was one of the greatest bassists in rock. Played the bass like a lead guitar. Chris Squire like. Not as noticeable as Squire was in Yes but if you truly pay attention, esp on the live album, you can hear his beautiful meticulous bass playing. No wonder why Wetton initially took the job after leaving King Crimson, which was highly demanding of all their musicians. Heep afforded him a lot of room to play.
Wow!!! I had no idea. Great offering. I bought Ken's 'Proud Words..." at a thrift store the summer of the year it was released. I didn't know who he was but from the photos he looked like he rocked it. I was right. Good album. I loved it but my best friend went crazy. He discovered the Uriah Heep connection and wound up buying everything they released in the '70s. I still have Ken's album and The Magician's Birthday. Thanks for the memories!

John Lawton's voice had a massive and also soulful and sensitive quality. The only problem was their uneven songwriting and production which could at worst be cheesy and too pop chart pandering (and failing at it) but that era also produced some of their best works. I would have wanted John Wetton to be at the front more and for a longer time. He too is awesome. High and mighty, which he sang on is an underrated album with just one or two weak traks. The only problem for the rock consumers was that it was "too mellow", so maybe they should've kept some tracks for the next album? Idk. but point is there was other factors than just Byron's problems that made them not function at their very best potential. Uriah Heep has never been a shooting star like some most famous band. Instead The Heep has been like the moon itself, shining in cycles and despite its flaws, its craters if you will.
I remember Rush opening 4 Uriah Heep when ever they rolled through San-Bernardino CA. Great shows back then!1973/1976 then go see them @ the old swing auditorium then go see them @ Long Beach AUDITORIUM 4 days later! Great shows.

I liked the David Byron era. My favorite album of Uriah Heep is Demons And Wizards. John Lawton was a great singer. Fallen Angel was a neat album. Lawton was a great songwriter. Peter Goalby was a great songwriter too. He wrote Blood Red Roses. Bernie Shaw is a fine singer. He can sing some songs from the Byron era with perfection. I have enjoyed all UH albums. I also have collected posters, buttons and dvd's.
Ken Hensley and Mick Box were the heart and soul of Uriah Heep. When Ken left the band kind of died... I think many early UH fans would agree... I actually promoted a UH show in Bandung Indonesia, back in March 1984, which at the time felt like a band from the past...
He was doing a lot of drugs so they sort of had to get rid of him. It was the same deal with Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones and Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd. They were both kicked out of their bands because of excessive drug use.
Saw them in about 75 as opener for Emerson Lake and Palmer. Awesome. And crazy loud. Loved Look at Yourself and Sweet Freedom but I played the living shit out of Uriah Heep Live

I was 13 when I seen those dudes in 78, but I got 8 more ticket stubs in th 70's& 80's, allways went to see them till 23 or so, they kept changing MEMBERS but RIP KENNY & all orginal members! Hank!
What a nice collection, simple and concise. This is a band that one listens to at any time and feels better every day, the experience is not improvised, but if we look at times, I take the beginning of the 70's, when I was very young and that sound made you travel with their music. . What a great group.

That "electric shock" story is PR BS, and I'm tired of hearing it. I was there. He very clearly just collapsed. (Drugs, most likely.) They were playing, the bass suddenly became incoherent garble, the look on the others' faces were "wtf?", then Gary dropped to the floor where he stood while still trying to play. Mick, the first one to react, quickly put his guitar down and rushed to Gary's aid. Neither he nor the others were shocked by touching Gary or his bass.
I went to their concert in Gothenburg Sweden. Unfortunately, David Byron was seriously drunk and fell of the stage. Ken Hensley in particular was not impressed.
I don’t pretend to know much about U H only that I love love love “Free Me” I play it all the time and it occurs to me that “July Morning” is a Masterpiece by any definition!
Uriah Heep, my first live concert held inside San Diego's hockey stadium where they opened for Savoy Brown but Savoy's equipment never arrived and while they were stalling, the audience fell in love with Uriah Heep's outstanding performance. They were at the top of their game that night and when Savoy came out, we booed them off stage, it was brutal. We must have screamed for half a dozen loud cheers and outburst that had Uriah Heep returning back for what seemed like a 2nd night. Best concert ever. That brings me to David Byron, we all know he had alcohol demons that poisoned his performance later in his career but he was the spearhead on stage. The whole band in 72 were tight and everyone contributed to a great rock sound.

The Look At Yourself to Sweet Freedom era of Uriah Heep will always be my favorite.

URIAH HEEP is the best rock band ever. On my rock-pop piano covers channel there are two of his great songs, Easy Livin' and Lady in Black, and URIAH HEEP is next to and on the same level as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, Pink Floyd and Deep Purple. They deserve it!!!

The most underrated band of all time. Gary Thain is the most fantastic bass player you have never heard. They should be in the Hall of Fame. But so should Dinosaur Jr., which truly saddens me.

Uriah Heep 1969-75 was a rock band that was up there with other great rock bands of the time.
Uriah Heep is still around and putting out records in their 70's that kick 10 times more ass than anything you'll ever hear on modern butt rock radio.

Another GREAT BAND and I believe have all passed but Mick who continues on today. They had the right recipe, great musicianship, great songs and a unique and powerful front man. David Byron stood right alongside his british brethren in greatness, Ozzy, Ian Gillan, Robert Plant, Ian Anderson, Greg Lake and on and on. Salisbury, Look At Yourself, Magicians Birthday, Demon's and Wizards, Live, these guys were an important part of an important time in music "Uriah Heep" 👍

@@edljnehan2811 agreed, I just meant David was an original. Greg Lake's passing as with Keith's are tragic losses and I miss them terribly. I luckily finally got to see ELP in the 90's and as anticipated it was one of the most memorable concert experience's of my life!
@@aschule5684 you should have seen them in 1971 or 1973 or even 1977 when Journey opened up for them. A totally different group then. But it's good you got to see them at all. I love Uriah Heep I had all of their albums and I saw them in concert with Queen Kansas and mahogany rush. That was right after Gary thain. Four groups for $3.95. You've got to love the early 70s.

My favorite era was in the early 70s, Gypsy is my favorite song. I’ve always thought the best thing about them at that time was not only were they a real heavy metal rock band but also their backup vocals.

It's by far the worst album of the Byron era. The songs are very bad produced. Only the title-track "Wonderworld" is a brilliant song and well produced, but not the rest of the album. If you love this album - congratulation - but I was sooo disappointed after buying and hearing it 50 years ago!
Everyone has an opinion. The Shadow And The Wind ... beautiful. Dreams .... So Tired .... Really good. Other good contributions as well to the Heep catalog as well. A Bluesy I Won't Mind ... really, really good. There's been way worse songs released by the band. Poor production and lame cover .... yes ... but some really good songs on this and way better than the song Wonderworld ... which is pretty good.

The wizard is probably my favorite. I also love Blind Eye which seems to rarely get mentioned. I saw them in the early 70s with Queen Kansas mahogany rush at one of those General seating far $3.95 shows

It was annoying how he said Very 'eevy Very 'umble and John Weeton.At the end of every sentence he'd make a groan sort of. I hear ya.
The whole video is a crock of crap. Right from the beginning he starts talking about people without introducing who they were. Add in the mispronunciations and it becomes unwatchable

I played keys, including a Hammond and souped up Lesile speaker back in the 70's with a really great band. It was fun playing Uriah Heep, DP, Yes, and others. I always loved their rock and roll medley on the live album too. I saw Ken Hensley at the NAMM show in Anaheim in the 1990's and boy was he wired on something. He was gyrating and talking non-stop. I wanted to try and get a few words to him, but I gave up. He had quite a presence.

Still have the ticket stub when I saw them In Columbia SC around 73. Don't remember who else was on the bill. I still have Demon's & Wizards; Magicians Birthday and Live on the LPs I bought back then. Saw some great concerts in the 70s and prices were $8-$12 for a concert. One of the most unusual line- ups I saw there, was Golden Earring, Blue Oyster Cult and Lynyrd Skynyrd on the same show.
I saw them in 73 & supporting acts were BOC & Tucky Buzzard

David Byron played in a band called Rough Diamond w/ ex Humble Pie guitarist Clem Clemson after leaving Heep. . Really good stuff. End Of The Line was a great song. He was an amazing vocalist. Thain was one of the greatest bassists in rock. Played the bass like a lead guitar. Chris Squire like. Not as noticeable as Squire was in Yes but if you truly pay attention, esp on the live album, you can hear his beautiful meticulous bass playing. No wonder why Wetton initially took the job after leaving King Crimson, which was highly demanding of all their musicians. Heep afforded him a lot of room to play.

I bought Ken's 'Proud Words..." at a thrift store the summer of the year it was released. I didn't know who he was but from the photos he looked like he rocked it. I was right. Good album. I loved it but my best friend went crazy. He discovered the Uriah Heep connection and wound up buying everything they released in the '70s.
I still have Ken's album and The Magician's Birthday.

Great and very underrated band, their later stuff is very strong. Glad they are still putting out quality albums.
"July Morning" is my favorite Heep's song and "Uriah Heep Live" was one of the most underrated live albums in history!
I enjoyed their music in the early 70s and saw them play in New Zealand in about 81. Good times

John Lawton's voice had a massive and also soulful and sensitive quality. The only problem was their uneven songwriting and production which could at worst be cheesy and too pop chart pandering (and failing at it) but that era also produced some of their best works.
I would have wanted John Wetton to be at the front more and for a longer time. He too is awesome.
High and mighty, which he sang on is an underrated album with just one or two weak traks. The only problem for the rock consumers was that it was "too mellow", so maybe they should've kept some tracks for the next album? Idk. but point is there was other factors than just Byron's problems that made them not function at their very best potential. Uriah Heep has never been a shooting star like some most famous band. Instead The Heep has been like the moon itself, shining in cycles and despite its flaws, its craters if you will.
I remember Rush opening 4 Uriah Heep when ever they rolled through San-Bernardino CA. Great shows back then!1973/1976 then go see them @ the old swing auditorium then go see them @ Long Beach AUDITORIUM 4 days later! Great shows.

I liked the David Byron era. My favorite album of Uriah Heep is Demons And Wizards. John Lawton was a great singer. Fallen Angel was a neat album. Lawton was a great songwriter. Peter Goalby was a great songwriter too. He wrote Blood Red Roses. Bernie Shaw is a fine singer. He can sing some songs from the Byron era with perfection. I have enjoyed all UH albums. I also have collected posters, buttons and dvd's.
Ken Hensley and Mick Box were the heart and soul of Uriah Heep. When Ken left the band kind of died... I think many early UH fans would agree... I actually promoted a UH show in Bandung Indonesia, back in March 1984, which at the time felt like a band from the past...

Big mistake sacking byron
He was doing a lot of drugs so they sort of had to get rid of him. It was the same deal with Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones and Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd. They were both kicked out of their bands because of excessive drug use.

One memorable negative review of Uriah Heep's first album was the Rolling Stone review: "If this band makes it I'll commit suicide."
They maid it though. They had 4 Gold records in the US.

Saw them in about 75 as opener for Emerson Lake and Palmer. Awesome. And crazy loud. Loved Look at Yourself and Sweet Freedom but I played the living shit out of Uriah Heep Live

I was 13 when I seen those dudes in 78, but I got 8 more ticket stubs in th 70's& 80's, allways went to see them till 23 or so, they kept changing MEMBERS but RIP KENNY & all orginal members! Hank!
Poor Uriah Heep, their US tours were filled with accident after accident. It's like they were cursed from the moment they set foot on American soil.
What a nice collection, simple and concise. This is a band that one listens to at any time and feels better every day, the experience is not improvised, but if we look at times, I take the beginning of the 70's, when I was very young and that sound made you travel with their music. . What a great group.

That "electric shock" story is PR BS, and I'm tired of hearing it. I was there. He very clearly just collapsed. (Drugs, most likely.) They were playing, the bass suddenly became incoherent garble, the look on the others' faces were "wtf?", then Gary dropped to the floor where he stood while still trying to play. Mick, the first one to react, quickly put his guitar down and rushed to Gary's aid. Neither he nor the others were shocked by touching Gary or his bass.
I went to their concert in Gothenburg Sweden. Unfortunately, David Byron was seriously drunk and fell of the stage. Ken Hensley in particular was not impressed.
I can only imagine being in a band in the 70's , you're immune system had to be very very strong.

Uriah Heep, my first live concert held inside San Diego's hockey stadium where they opened for Savoy Brown but Savoy's equipment never arrived and while they were stalling, the audience fell in love with Uriah Heep's outstanding performance. They were at the top of their game that night and when Savoy came out, we booed them off stage, it was brutal. We must have screamed for half a dozen loud cheers and outburst that had Uriah Heep returning back for what seemed like a 2nd night. Best concert ever. That brings me to David Byron, we all know he had alcohol demons that poisoned his performance later in his career but he was the spearhead on stage. The whole band in 72 were tight and everyone contributed to a great rock sound.
