      Build custom rack. Sht gets wet but if out west doesn't rain that much.
      HEAVY DUTY. You will be glad. On gladiator 8 foot works for one sheet of plywood. Cut it down to 7 feet. Use round tube or bar for end and front crossbars. I used 1.5 angle for top metal ran 2x12s across, fits into angle, screwed plywood to that.
      It's heavy 300 pounds but I used thick metal. Aluminum is the way to go though. Expensive.
      6 foot bed with tailgate gives you air mat bed. I found canvas slung over rack the best cover. And popup for tailgate sitting sun block area. I was Infantry so do duffles with contractors bags inside for bulky puffy gear.
      Only pain is winds. Tie down. Custom welded metal Stakes work best with loop welded on.
      Hatchet for hammer.
      Used Tundra before Gladiator. They are beasts.
      Hauling. Pulling. Payload.
      300 pound rack didn't matter at all on it.

    Thanks for sharing! I have the same Jeep and color but was thinking of going with the Back Topper.....this confirms my hunch. I don't like the color match since it already has a black top. I also am concerned about the weight but I see you have decked it....that probably impacts as well. The slight extension in the rear is about concerning as well. I think, for now, I'll keep my hard plastic tri-fold tonneau cover until they improve these...

    • @overlandevolution3141
      @overlandevolution3141  Před 4 lety +3

      As for the color match, Iv actually started to like it. The rear extension was due to the installer. Iv since moved it forward and it has a very nice match. Yes the decked system is about an extra 200 lbs. Iv since changed out springs and have a proper rake again.

  • @sluggotinfantryman
    @sluggotinfantryman Před rokem +1

    Nice. Side deals are it. Sweet. Still welding my own. You can carry anything. If you extend over top 12 inches it's noisy but that and 6 over back you can load up roof with 6x6 lumber to 6 person raft. Dance party.
    Real tie down rails like tractor trailer ones.
    And if you roll it will support entire vehicle.
    I hooked it to tie downs with turn buckles. Real ones. Stuck each post hole with welded steel connected to rack. Then bolt/ quick release pin through or you can thread bottom up through drain hole if serious or just use turn buckles.
    I paid 400 for metal. Tops are awesome. BUT 40 years construction and army likes indestructible and hauling kayaks canoes elephants up top.
    I worked where you are going. WY UT CA CO MT.
    Dad lived in Moab 13 years. Yosemite Rocky Yellowstone BLM AZ STRIP Teton that's alot of FS BLM NPS roads driven in government rigs snow plows graders D6 backhoes....... AZ STRIP is connected to Lake Mead NRA Grand Canyon Basically from Vermillion Cliffs to Colorado.
    You make top plywood on 2x12s cross members to break heat.
    Throw canvas over it done.
    Sleep on top or in back.
    Take a pop up and you have a 10x10 house on back. Over over hole thing.
    For $1600 less. Or more. Even if you pay a welder.
    Gusset corners. Weld tie down rail whole length of bed. Three posts.
    Round bar front rear for shoving stuff up onto top.
    You want no dust throw Yakima up there. It's the desert. It's dusty. I use contractor garbage bags and stuff them into 12 dollar Army duffle bags
    For pillows blankets air mats sleeping bags ......
    Throw em on ground. We use insulated carhartts for sleeping bag. They also have 12 pockets so hold a 12 pack of beer at camp fire party. Hello. Bibs coat combo.
    Polypad army surplus.
    Poncho with liner if real cold.

    I’ve always loved the look of classic old school Land Rover Defenders. This look reminds me of that and I like the color match personally. My JTE is all black and I’m considering going this route now that I’ve seen yours. I have a mopar 2 inch lift on mine. I’m hoping that I don’t get the same sag that you mentioned yours to have before having to upgrade your suspension.

    The cap on my Tacoma also looks like it should be a little farther forward, it is as far forward as it will go. Installer told me it's designed that way to let the bed flex without the cap hitting the cab. But then I see other caps that are much closer to the cab. This is the first review I've seen with the same situation as mine. Guess I'm getting used to it, doesn't bother me as much as when I first got it.

    One of the things that steered me toward the stainless steel RLD or the aluminum Alu Cab was its ability to hold significant weight ontop. Do you know the static and dynamic weight limits of the ARE canopy?

    • @overlandevolution3141
      @overlandevolution3141  Před 4 lety +1

      According to ARE, static is 500#. When I ordered, RLD was unable to make my timeline and Alu Cab released their Gladiator cap two weeks later. Ultimately, this is only for the short term. Planning to go with a AT Habitat for next summer.

      Unfortunately, I haven’t gotten a straight answer on capacity.
      Since filming I did adapt my Rhino Rack. It took a little work. I’m considering putting one of my Tepuis on top, but haven’t yet. I Have used it to transport two 95lb kayaks, 45lb OZTENT RV5 and about 20lbs of MaxTraxs on two twelve hour drives and a weekend driving on the beach with no issues. That’s actually much heavier than most RTTs. Still not totally convinced that the topper can support a RTT and two people.

    The Cap looks good but you should have match it to your hard top! I am in the market for a Gladiator but I want to test drive the Mojave since I have already done the Rubicon and since I live in FL a Rock Crawler is ok but a the Sand Capability of the Mojave might be more Fun here with all the Sugar Sand that we have! I have been configuring the Gladiator for the past 3 months and I keep going back and forth on Matching the hard top and since I want to get the Gladiator in Sting Gray to Match my 2020 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk with Hemi V8 the Matching colored Top does make it look more a finished truck when the top is on! How easy is it to take the Cap off?

      the decked system weights 205lbs without anything in it. The ARE classic cap on a large long bed only weight 185lbs and im sure the gladiator is only around 145 ish. Go throw 3 50lbs bags of sand or dirt in it and that would be equivalent with the cap alone.

      Yes, the decked system is right at 200 lbs and the cap is about 165 lbs. This was enough for a significant sag. It definitely depends on the suspension choices you make. I will be taking it down to Cape Lookout NC at the end of the month with kayaks and two OZ Tents on top, that should be our final test.

      Overland Evolution I’m really liking the gladiator platform they need to put a hemi in from the factory that will be a game changer.

    give me a cap that stretches far enough to replace the base of the hard top, and still retain the ability to youse the freedom top

      Unfortunately, they can’t do it. The body and bed flex independently. Even a roof rack has to be on one or the other.

      @@overlandevolution3141 I've been also thinking about that, but that's a problem I didn't have on my mind. But do they flex that much? Couldn't you connect those two pieces with some flexible material? Having both parts connected, with put down rear seats, would make the perfect base for a bed and you'd still have lots of storage underneath the bed. That'd be the perfect camper for me.

      Possibly if you built a platform at the same level as the top of the bed and body. Flex isn’t really that bad with a full frame, but it definitely moves side to side off road. I’m sure it could be done with a little extra work.

      Thanks, but it’s definitely grown on me. It’s actually been extremely useful.

    The Decked is where all your sag is coming from. Those things are a waste of payload capacity.

    That cap doesn't fit well. You don't have the room to slide it forward enough to make up that difference it is hanging over on the back.

      Since the video, I did slide the cap forward. It sits as it should now. Unfortunately the installer didn’t take the time to do it right.
