A guide on painting black armour without using a prominent blue highlight is a God send. Thanks for the information Richard!
I especially like your grim dark tutorials, it's the perfect balance between fidelity and looking realistically worn. You're my hero
I second to this. Great work and tutorial, as usual
When the best mini painter in the world shares how he paints minis. what a time to be alive
*for free
Well some isn't for free.
you're simply the best. Love your style. I bought some second hand Astartes and some paints brushes 2 mouth ago... I was about to paint may firt mini in 30 years. I was procrastinating when i discover you on insta, i was blown away, it was 4 days ago, then i discover your youtube chanel, paint my first space wolve 2 days ago! thanks a lot, wethering is not done yet but i'm already SUPER pleased with my result.
Please do Dark Angels next. Loving your grimdark series!
matte varnish looks great on black! Loved it
I really like how the shoulders came out with the matt varnish and the brown oils.
You mentioned that you should have used gloss varnish before washing, but I think the brown looks great for a grim dark marine. I also like the highlighting.
Amazing mate, even when a colour combo you use doesn’t apply to me too much, I always find something really useful and your vertigris is so simple and I have been looking for this look. Cheers dude. 😁
The model looks amazing. Your instructions/descriptions for the most part are very clear and beginner friendly. Thanks for doing this!
Some of the best tutorials on CZcams. Excellent stuff
Sweeeeet Lawrd, quite literally, how come I've got You subscribed but never payed much attention - those are ones of most wholesome tutorials I've seen in a long time. I'm at the stage, when I can do pretty much everything (not in a perfect way, but still) but I'm looking for some inspiration to push me further - kind sir, YOU ARE THE GUY!
Thank You!
oh it seems like i have found a hidden gem on youtube, with results like this you should be getting a lot more attention from the community man
This was exactly the style I was looking for for my Legion of the Damned! Thanks so much, and I'll definitely check out your other videos for grimdark yellows and reds when I finish and move on to Howling Griffons!
I've always been put off watching your videos after seeing your Mortarion and thought i would never be able to paint like that (it is properly intimidating but amazing beautiful a true masterpiece) so I thought (incorrectly) that your vids would be another high-level painting vid where you need to have gone to art school to truly appreciate it and understand your instructions ....
However, this video is fantastic and your awesome approach to it is phenomenal!! The way you almost talk down the ability to do stuff is great for people wanting to better their best. It broke some misconstrued barriers about techniques and methods. Just pop this here, pop that there, don't do that do this instead, worried about light source just say its a bomb exploded :D
Honestly, i can say this has been one of the best vids i have seen where someone has rushed through a model and it still looks like it would get a final place in Golden Daemon! Keep up the amazing work...
Totally agree! He makes next level painting feel accessible and attainable!
Love the tutorials, especially the grimdark ones. Would be interested to see your take on purple marines (like soul drinkers, it's hard to get it to look right - metal marine has had several acetone baths so far). Oddly try adding the highlights with oils as well, can get a good effect blending them with spirits and adding while still wet
This is fantastic. I’m planning to put together at least a Black Templar Kill Team, and This will be my template. Thanks.
Oh, this may actually be the base approach for my new Horus Heresy Raven Guard, albeit in a more reduced way to speed up painting 40 Marines. Thanks for the inspiration!
How do you only have 17k views? I have learned so much already! Thank you!
I always love your tutorials! They are amazing! 😀
Please Richard, for the love of the Emperor, a Grimdark Dark Angel video next! :D I love your work brother, keep it up. Big hugs from Spain!
Would love to see a video for Dark Angels using similar techniques
Thanks! I really love these style of tutorials.
Another amazing tutorial man. I love the style of grimdark you do. Could you do a tutorial for blood angels? Really interested to see what you’d do
That's on the list!
Looks great! Really want to see you do this for Space Wolves!
I have always wanted to do a shinning silver 'black templer' army with white tabard and red 'crusader crosses' I have always loved that look in the old Films :) they would be a great army to run with my Sisters of battle.
As a noob..I found myself saying "wow, this look nice, he is done?" Every 5 minutes.
I have learned over the years that judges for painting competitions do NOT like the grimdark, textured/sketchy style. So when I paint for competitions, it's all about being clean, high contrast, sharpness readable to the eye. When painting for myself? I love to do it like this.
Well Richard paints with a texture/sketchy style for his models and has won plenty of GD's with that style. So I don't think that's true. I mean look at the most recent Gold winner in vehicle. It's as grimey as you can get
Many thanks! Could you have used a cotton tip in spirits to dab off your highlight to save additional time. Could miss the gloss coat altogether too? Would love to see you speed paint a squad and your overall work flow. Thx again 👍🌊
Please, please do a grim dark blood angel, love your work , pure class 👍
That looks awesome!
Hi Richard, excellent tutorial! 30k Dark Angel next maybe?
Amazing stuff mate 👏
That crack about the three explosions makes me think it could be interesting to try having one of the light sources be a different colour... 🤔
Great tutorial thanks for sharing mate
Amazing job. Will you be doing a Grimdark Dark Angel at some point?
I appreciate you leaving in your mistakes in your videos.
do you paint the back of the model?
Crimson fists next!!!!! Video slays mate 👌
Always love watching you paint.. but, is there any way you could show us how you get the paints ready for painting, getting the mix right etc ? It's something I notice with a lot of painters... it's definitely something I really struggle with... Thanks :)
yeah I struggle with this too. Would love to see how it's done properly
The easiest way is to count the brushfulls of paint and water and stirr those together on the wet palette. The ratios depend on what you need; whether you need a glaze or something more opaque for layering or highlighting. It's also not the same for every paint because those behave quite differently, depending on the manufacturer and tone/pigment. Experiment and try out for yourselves.
Really liking your methods (found this after your Mk6 blood angel tutorial).
Watching your black armour, you suggest Basalt Grey after the German Grey…is there an alternative to this you would suggest? Comparison charts suggest Dawnstone from GW but that looks lighter than the Basalt you use.
Keep it up!
I absolutely love your work! I've been wondering do you have anything where you've done a Grey Knight? I'd love to see how to translate this sort of idea into even more grey armour
Can you do grim dark charchardons? Love to see you do space sharks and soul drinkers in grimdark, great videos
Thanks for making another amazing video :) could you do one on how to paint black legion chaos space marines !
sort of a necro here but I just now found this video. Would it be fair to surmise if you prefer the more blue black look of BT that replacing the grey's in this process with blues would work with the same workflow?
I think I need to report a murder, that airbrush cup was terrible 😂 great tutorial!!
I am not upset with the "too" brown-ness of the oil paint. I think that would be a style choice.
4:22 ADEPTUS MECCANOCUS!!!
Awesome job mate, what do you usually use to thin your metalics? Specifically the non- vallejo metal color ones?
You're the Caravaggio of miniature's painting.
Hi Richard can you recommend a good magnifying glass or goggles please so I can really see the details when painting ?
I’m just proud your airbrush is all dirty like mine.
His brush control is ridiculous (in a good way)
j’aime beaucoup mais dommage qu'on ne voit pas tes pots de peintures avec les noms plutôt que simplement la couleurs
Can I paint more acrylic over the oil wash without issue?
Thanks for the amazing content Richard
You should be fine, just be careful that the oil wash was very thin. Oil takes a lot longer to dry than acrylic and will cause cracking on the acrylic if the acrylic is on top. A very thin wash shouldn't cause an issue though.
@@demonrich Thanks!
Have you tried Liquitex white ink for airbrushing if you don’t like white paint?
Happy to see one of the best miniature painters in the world make mistakes. Makes us mortals feel less bad about ours... ;)
could u do a spacewolf without airbrush ;P im strugling with my spacewolfs
This bloke is too good at painting
this looks insane! but this is going to take too long for 50 primaris lol
If you have virdigris on your gold doesn’t that mean your techpriest has sold the real stuff on the black market and replaced it with brass?
lol at the drinking noises at 11 minutes. I hope it was refreshing.
Got a tutorial for something similar but white armor?
Not yet, but I will be doing one!
I love your work, but looking at that dirty airbrush gives me immense anxiety :)
🔥🎸🔥
get video watched this after Chris Frosin suggested it to someone in his stream... think ill give ago but use Vallejo Hexed Lichen, Warlord Purple and Squid Pink to give a purple look... do have a question haven't given oil ago all the videos i have seen seem to sponge or cotton bud the oil off, unless i missed it you didnt??
Richard, do you do character commissions?
Do you think you could get a similar result with say a wash of Agra’s earth shade?
Good tutorial, though that airbrush cup needs to be cleaned. You can see chunks of dried paint droping into your paint when you are mixing your colour in it. Keeping the cup clean will help lengthen the life or your airbrush
у чувака губки не нашлось
Not a fan of black templar as its hard to highlights good for black but dddddaaaaammmmnnnn boi he thicc
lacking some heraldry for a templar but ok
Were you drunk when recording the audio?
really good skills + very informative, loads of thanks. i subbed straight away. [el'sda2].
