The following paints were used:
Games Workshop: Macragge Blue, Calgar Blue, Blue Horror, Mephiston Red, Wild Rider Red, Ushabti Bone
Vallejo: Basalt Grey, Neutral Grey, Pale Grey Blue, Black, (Metal Colour Magnesium, Gold, Chrome)
Scale 75: Dwarven Gold
Winsor & Newton: Oil Colour: Burnt Sienna, Black (Burnt Umber!)
Forge World: Dark Sand - Zábava
Don't worry too much it's just a tabletop piece: proceeds to casually paint a miniature to a standard I could never hope to achieve trying my absolute hardest haha. Amazing work!

Dang These videos are the best!
This is hands-down the best painted model I have ever seen in my entire life.
under which rock are you living? ;)
@@TierDrama Dude, seriously? This model is like a fricking painting. I saw it over at Reddit it I didn't believe it was a mini at first. Every stroke is as precise as it can be. All of these gradients and effects make it look so perfect.
@@FlameJackstar I hope you are joking. of course it looks good...its fucking freaking richard gray. but have a look around at his more serious stuff and other painters...jesus christ.

@@TierDrama ... Well, okay then.
@@FlameJackstar Almost nothing is overly precise on this model, that is the whole point of the video and the techniques demonstrated :)
I just did my intro set of Intercessors using a lot of advice in this video. I'm really happy with my with how they turned out. Especially for my first 40K models, and not doing any modeling in probably 36 years. Thanks for the help! Great video.
Long in depth videos are so undervalued, so I find this so useful!
Impressive! Looks very grim dark, but at the same time not dirty, like many other "grimdark" miniatures. Thanks for sharing the tutorial!
Did anyone else fall in love with the dwarven gold by the end?
This is an amazing way to paint ultras without them looking "boring". Brilliant.
awesome to see another step by step process from you, keep up the great work
Wow, love that texture!
Lovely work Richard. Thanks for posting these here!
Watching your work is something else learning alot to add to my arsenal of painting knowledge thanks for the videos look forward to the next
Love love love these recent videos! Keep them coming!
Just starting out in the hobby, watching this with a breakdown of techniques and paints used is incredibly helpful and inspiring - thanks so much!
I’m so glad I watched this! I haven’t painted up much of my death guard and I think these techniques would work great with them!
I love seeing content like this from you. I really have to try to do more grimdark. I love the style but in the past I've become too comfortable with the clean Eavy Metal style. Great inspiration to give it a go.
That is an amazing paint job. Blown away. You make it look so easy too.
As always an astonishing work! Big Fan of Yours
Phenonemal workflow, presentation and result!
this is exactly what i was looking for with my little ultramarines army, thank you!!!!
Absolutely phenomenal table top mini, captures that grimdark feel perfectly and still carries your signature look and feel to a T 👍 from someone who moved to studio scale modelling for years before coming back to minis, it’s really nice seeing all the techniques starting to blend 😎
the final result looks amazing! it looks just like a painting
Great job, this space marine looks really cool and all of the steps were well explained. Thank you for sharing.
Absolutely phenomenal.
The most beautiful space marine I've ever seen! Love your stuff!
looks great! Its the subtleties that really make it ~ very good attention to detail
Awesome result with a simple process!! I love it! Thank you.
I really like this style....it is full of texture, grim dark, but a controllable type of grim and dark and the final effect is very realistic, thank you
Loved watching this, cheers Richard.
So cool! You're my new internet hero. Amazing work.
I love the texture you gave it
1st video of your channel. Fantastic video! Great that you tell folk what the "extra" / over-and-above steps are. Keeps an easy to follow consistency.
Great video and great to see things like oils and transfers used
Thanks so much for this Rich, great one to try for someone like me trying to up my game but also paint 50 models! 🙏🙏
Utterly stunning Richo, sheer brilliance.
This has me so excited to try. Wish I had an airbrush. Going to try the same stipple style with the other 2 paints
Love the paint scheme again, loving this series of video's. My one C&C is the feet don't press into the ground, so it looses some of the feeling of weight.
I’m over the moon that CZcams and Squidmar recommended your channel. Your content is incredible 👍. Thank you 🙏
Love this effect. I find it much more in keeping with my idea of how they should look rather than the edge highlighting bonanza you see on other models that end up producing a Tron warrior appearance!
Beautiful process! And results
What a nice surprise finding you on Youtbe doing tutorials, looking forward for more, thank you for the content
Great work! As always!
Lovely cinematography 😎
As always great work Sir!
Thank you for uploading!
Looks beautiful.
Love it ! I want this for my future Dark Angels.
This guy truly is Emperors finest. Great job!
Thank you Richard beautiful table top model
FANTASTIC!
Amazing to see your process. I've been working with oil washes on miniatures for a few years and I can recommend using small make-up sponges with thinner to remove the washes. It doesnt leave unwanted fibres like the cotton buds do. Saves a lot of hassle, but they tend to be more absorbent. Awesome work and truly shows your masterful control and experience as an artist.
Absolutely amazing
Your tabletop standard is ridiculously good. Bravo.
Incredible!
this looks amazing
I have to give this a go. Looks really good; higher than table top for sure. Thanks for the vid.
It looks amazing!
Great Video! Looking foward to try this technique.
Absolutely amazing. Thank you
So satisfying
Well done sir. Well done.
Amazing job!!🎉❤❤❤
Awesome work.
That was amazing !
The decal tips were rly helpful!
Gorgeous.
Awesome work, 2,5 hours including drying times! Sheesh, I got some way to go!
Your Painting skill is awesome, your Marine looks so real, very good. I try it for myself with one Marine I have left. Greetings from Germany.
First 5 minutes: oh this gonna suck.
40 minutes in: EHMEHRGERD HOW AWESOME IS THAT!?
I recently got into miniature painting. Being a chaos guy myself, i chose as my first miniature a Great Unclean One. Iv been having a blast painting it but its not anywhere near perfect like the works of Richard Grey but I now have something to truly work towards. If i knew what I know now going into this I would have painted some of these pieces before gluing stuff down but in a few years when i learn more I will absolutely be picking up another Great Unclean one to do a comparison between where i started and where i end up.
This is so awesome.
Incredible work.
Pure art!!!
Thank you so much for this video!
Very good work.
awesome work dude
Saw this figure on instagram, unbelievable good!
I admire Warhammer's grimtale. Progress at it's finest.
Awesome! 👍
Amazing tutorial 👍🏻
I really enjoyed this. Kudos for advertising on FB... was totally unaware of your channel. So yeah. Perfectly paced video. Great technique. If I could just aim that airbrush like you can... thanks mate!
Same, need to cross promote some more. I see some fb posts and follow on Insta, had no idea yt was being done.
Beautiful!!!
Brilliant that is mate.
I really would like to see more grim dark from you... maybe even a higher level of details, like you mephiston mini. You are an insanely good painter.
Great video, great channel - subscribed!
Me: getting bored of CZcams....
CZcams: Richard Gray?
Me: I love CZcams!!!
Great content, a joy to watch a master painter!!! learnt so much more watching just how you work the brush over the model.. thank you Mr Gray!!!
lovely work this, thanks for the vid. My next SM paint will be ultramarines, and they'll be GD style for sure
Fantastic, easily becoming my fav CZcams, keep going! That sub count will catch up to your work in the near future
It’s beautiful 🥹
I absolutely love this. The only thing I have a minor dislike for is the initial stippling step adds the rough texture to the gold areas of the paint job and I don’t like the way it looks. But I think the textured look looks great on the blue parts of the armour. 🙌🏻👌🏻
Very Cool!
FYI, Micro set is basically just white vinegar... for anyone who doesn't want to pay for that. just get some white vinegar from the kitchen or from the dollar store. works exactly the same.
For gold I use a mixture of vallejo gold and copper (6:1 ratio). It makes a warmer gold than the pure one, close to the color you used but with better coverage.
amazing
awesome!
Fantastic
Wow... I am going to be painting my ultramarine's like this.. thank you so much !!! Can you do a Grimdark Gulliman next ?
10 minutes in and it already looks great lol
Model looks great. One tip for Vallejo Metal Color gold - Make a mix of 3 parts Vallejo Metal Color Copper to 2 parts Vallejo Metal Color Gold. It makes an amazing rich gold color. I keep a small pre mixed bottle.
OMG! PHENOMINAL
Phenomenal
