Yes I do! I find it is really handy when sculling, maintaining my body position and only concentrating on feeling the water instead of having to take breaks to get some breath.

yes it is a very useful tool for evening out your stroke as Heather touched on. also there are some triathlons in the US that allow snorkels depending on the race director and if the race is sanctioned or not

I could not breath properly so I bought one of these a month ago before I saw this video, found it on amazon, and thought I’d give it a try. I absolutely love it. Sure easier than learning how to breath out the side. Allows me to concentrate on technique and endurance ( the main reason for my swimming) and not worry about drowning.😂😂😂. Tks for this video and the support it’s given.

I use snorkel a lot when doing drills - working on my catch, balance, limb positions, sculling, etc.
    Two points though:
    1. Buy a snorkel with a valve in its lower part. So when you cough out water - the most of it will go through the valve, not through the top. And also, having a valve (and hence a little of tube below the mouthpiece) can deal with small accidential amounts of water (you won't even notice that).
    2. Personally, when I use snorkel my head position is not optimal. I may be looking, like 45 degrees in front, but not by my eyes, but with the whole head. When I try to position my head really neutrally, due to short tube some water goes into.
    Cheers!

Hey cousin! I figure any Ferguson shares a connection with me back to that clan of Lowland horse thieves. Many decades ago I took a scuba diving class during my brief stay at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. The first exercise was bobbing up and down facing the pool's side wearing a mask. Everyone had some degree of panic. I appreciate swimming's lack of stuff; a suit if you are dressing formally and goggles if you want to open your eyes in that dilute bleach solution. I've always wanted to breath like a porpoise, so Ms. Fell's pitch may have been nudge it takes to go get myself a snorkel.

I'm finding using a snorkel great for neck limitations that I have, but as a new at swimming laps now and trying to loose weight, I am looking for instruction on how to "breathe" correctly while swimming laps as my cardio goes up and my need for oxygen increases. I seem starved and out of breath. I have bought several snorkels now even full face ones that have valves to allow fresh air in and pushes all the cO2 air out a different way as to not be breathing CO2 back in like a straight snorkel does.
I am assuming that I probably need to try and pace myself to a slower pace. Is there a video that either you know of or can make showing how to combine using a Snorkel and swimming at the correct pace to not get O2 starved?

I would love your feedback on this. I tried using a snorkel for the first time today and i just started bobbing up and down to get used to it. My first time i panicked because it was such a weird sensation or pressure on my face. Talk about claustrophobia 101 🤢
I found myself hyperventilating at first, but when i told myself to breath and relax, it was easier. I found it easier with the kick board (Finnis triangular one) but much harder doing freestyle. The water shot straight up my nose!
Secondly, I practiced swimming under water then coming back up to expel the water, well, that didn't go as expected, i nearly drowned 😨 - I find that i cannot expel the water fully, so is that a strength thing, or am i doing it wrong? Tomorrow i will try blowing out while under to see if that makes a difference. I can't do flip turns yet but will practice, once i can learn to swim with the snorkel. I'm not going to use nose plugs because i don't want to die!!! I don't like them at all. I have cardiovascular issues, so i get out of breath easily. Nose plugs put me in shear panic mode.
Really hard stull this, but i love it. The life guards tell me i have improved so much since i started, so i'm really happy thus far, just need to keep practising.
Great tutorial, please let me know your thoughts. Or any pro swimmers😅

This was a response I got from my local pool at my local leisure center, I thought I would take up swimming again so I bought a snorkel, as soon as I entered the pool I heard a whistle. The rules don't allow snorkels so I was told I should place an inquiry on their website, here is their response. If it weren't so sad it would be funny.
Keep in mind I have been swimming since I was about 3 years old so about 50 years ago.
I've used many snorkels and have even done some diving I am still a strong swimmer even after an extended break.
    Good Afternoon,
    Thank you for your enquiry.
Unfortunately you're not allowed to use a snorkel in our pool. This is due to the risk it it creates. For activities such as this we have to create a risk assessment which includes details of the equipment used, the upkeep of it, the guidance of how to use it, training in the safe use of the equipment, medical information and more. Therefore we have opted to not allow this activity in our public sessions.
    Kind regards,

This is an old post, so not sure if my reply is worth anything, but I find this, as well. I expel when the snorkel starts taking on water, and sometimes that helps. After a few dozen laps, I tend to stop altogether and remove the snorkel, dunk it in water and blow the water out as forcefully as I can. That will last for another dozen laps.

I am a new swimmer and can only do the breaststroke. I bought a snorkel (TYR 2.0 Ultralite Snorkel) to help me learn the motions of freestyle (I alternate 1 breaststroke lap with one freestyle kick lap).
I was unable to breathe with the snorkel. It does not have a purge valve either. I am not sure how to breathe with it. Does anyone have any suggestions, methods or instructions that might give me a better understanding on how to breathe properly with it? I find it hard to pull air in and I am not sure how to balance my breathes. I was told a snorkel with a purge valve might help, not just to expel water but to allow or the air to enter without too much pressure in the tube. Do you still breathe in from your mouth and out from your nose (unless clearing tube)?

It's a bit late to reply but Try Better Health Uk Gyms. I use a lot and I see people wear them in all. It's the full face diving ones that are not allowed. They are all over the Uk, so bound to have one near you. Just check that they have the swim doctors. My improvement is solely down to them.
      London Fields Lido
      Oasis Indoor
      Britannia - Hackney
I use all of them and they have swim doctors at only £3.40! Amazing classes and you use all the gear. They are big on gear.
      Kickboards
      Pullboys
      Hand Paddles
      Finns and your own snorkels.
