    Great video, thank you. Very important that when you attach your snorkel to the mask you make sure that the opening for the drain valve is facing backwards. So as Joe says usually this will mean fixing on the left. If you don’t do this there is chance that the snorkel won’t drain properly. Then when you take your next breath you may breath in water. This can be pretty scary. But if your snorkels fitted properly you won’t have a problem. It’s a little thing and very simple but its very important.

  • @Project_STI
    @Project_STI Před 2 lety +75

    More advanced safety: We’ve also got an important piece of safety advice regarding the snorkel. Most freedivers go underwater with their snorkel in their mouth. When you do this, the water doesn’t rush into your mouth because your tongue is actively blocking the hole in the snorkel. If you were to black out underwater, your tongue would no longer actively block this hole - it would go limp like everything else. So water would rush into your mouth and possibly into your lungs. Diving underwater with the snorkel in your mouth violates the No. 1 rule of freediving safety - to always protect the airway.
    Here are three simple suggestions to increase your safety while freediving:
    Dive one-up one-down; be close enough to grab your buddy when he or she surfaces.
    Watch your buddy for no less than 30 seconds every time he or she surfaces.
    Don’t free dive over-weighted. At the surface do a relaxed exhalation, like a sigh.
    If you sink, you’re wearing too much weight. Keep taking off weight one pound at a time until you can pass this test.

      Invest in good snorkeler set. TUSA for mask and snorkel. Cressi Sub for the slip on fin. They're v good. Avoid heavy rubber fin. They're heavy and can make you cramp. If snorkel for hours. Eat two bananas. If you cramp easily, use a life jacket. Elderly swimmers die from cramps !

      No you should never teach people to keep the snorkel in their mouth, shallow water blackouts can happen at any depth and that snorkel will act as a funnel, especially new divers that generally don’t know their limits.

    • @rorydimov405
      @rorydimov405 Před 3 lety +2

      @@samuelmartin293 Sorry Sam but if you black out under water, I don't care if you have a snorkel in your mouth or not, that water is going straight into your mouth/lungs when your body tries to resume breathing as it will still be underwater. The big takeaway here is to not form bad (potentially dangerous) habits. If you get used to taking a shallow dive while snorkeling eventually you may find yourself going deeper and deeper with the snorkel in your mouth. If you learn to never dive with it in your mouth it is a non-issue.

  • @brianroberts5672
    @brianroberts5672 Před rokem +15

    This video includes most of the basics but I will add a few tips. When trying to stand from a prone face down position whilst wearing fins is difficult. First, without fins, learn to roll onto your back and then stand. Once you can do this smoothly you are ready to wear fins.
    Clearing your mask of water can be done by breathing out through your nose whilst pressing the top of the mask. The air replaces the water that escapes at the bottom of the mask where the seal is weakest. This trick is essential if you intend learning to scuba dive later.
    I prefer the basic snorkel. If you do progress to diving down you will probably experience the urge to breathe before you blow out the water in the snorkel at the surface. On starting your assent, look to the surface, pull the snorkel end to point down, as you ascend blow some air into the snorkel. This air will expand and clear the water in the tube. With experience you will not have to waste time at the surface clearing the snorkel but will be able to breathe in immediately.
    Without good technique many struggle and use up a lot of energy and air to perform a smooth surface dive at the start of a descent. Your buoyancy is at its greatest at the surface so "getting under" may be a problem. Start prone, looking down with both hands by your hips. Both palms facing down. The aim is to turn the body through 180° from horizontal to vertical with the hips at the surface and the legs out of the water providing the weight to sink the snorkeller. First make a vigorous dolphin kick and at the same time bow at the waist to point the head to the bottom of the pool. The hips, legs and arms are still horizontal at the surface. Keeping the arms straight press down to bring them pointing down along side your ears. At the same time lift both legs as vertically as possible. Bending, then straightening the legs may be easier. The hands are now in front of you ready to provide extra drive downwards. The dolphin kick facilitates the "bow" (pike) and the arm press facilitates the leg lift. 90° + 90° = 180°. Practice only in deep water or you could finish with a head ache.

    • @brianroberts5672
      @brianroberts5672 Před 9 měsíci

      Sampo, to snorkel learning the technique I suggested to clear your mask is not necessary but it is if you intend to learn to scuba dive. When snorkelling you can ease the mask away from your face at the surface to clear a flooded mask. When scuba diving this would not help. I still think the technique is worth learning because it requires less energy. You will need to lift your head to make sure any water is collecting at the bottom of your mask.
      It is a year since my last post and I am embarrassed to see that I described a turn from horizontal to vertical as 180°. The top half of the body turns 90° and then the bottom half turns 90°. The whole body has turned 90° not 180°. Sorry!

    • @brianroberts5672
      @brianroberts5672 Před 9 měsíci

      Sampo, I forgot to answer your problem about water getting in your nose. When in water, learning to swim or snorkel, one of the basic first steps is to learn the correct breathing pattern. On land most of us use our nose to breathe, both in and out. In water we should only breathe through our mouths. Water up your nose is not pleasant but water that gets into your mouth can be spat out easily. When snorkelling the rule still applies. We use explosive exhalation to clear a snorkel. Some recommend inhaling by mouth, (via the snorkel) and exhaling by the nose, occasionally ensuring the mask seal on the forehead is strongest, thus clearing any water in the mask. This method of breathing, in through the mouth and out through the nose also means there is no exhaled air left in the snorkel so you only get fresh air on the next intake. ( This is not a problem with valved snorkels.) Hope this helps.
