    The original swags are a lot smaller. One thing you have to do with these is to cure it, hose it down inside and out. This will make the canvas expand making it water tight, more breathable with no condensation.

    make sure you season the canvas before you take it out in the wet, this is important to ensure it does not leak through the seams

    It's a swag! Not a tent. The idea behind them is totally different. The swag is hands down the best sleep you will have outdoors. The weight/size isn't an issue when you take into account that the bedding, sleeping bag and pillow all stay in the swag. Don't compare it to a tent in your head, but more of a mobile bed you can take anywhere.

    • @jacobmudd8024
      @jacobmudd8024 Před 5 lety +3

      it's totally a tent. the addition of the bedding doesn't make it not be a tent. it's a tent with extras.

    If after 20 years I've now been able to convince my wife to go camping a LOT more because of a swag, I think that says a lot. Yes we have tried various tents in the past and the wife still didn't enjoy going camping that much but when I bought her a swag boy did things change!. The ease of setting up/take down and the personal attachment you get from owning a swag is something you will only understand once you have tried and own one. You actually get more time to relax and enjoy your quick weekend camping getaway! :)

  • @aussiehunterandgatherer8954

    get an Australian made one, make it like a bed you have at home you leave the mattress and your bedding inside when you roll it up so it's ready for the next trip you see alot of negative comments about this but if your not Australian you don't understand why the swag is so big and apart of our culture

    That there is a very well made swag tent, now as you pointed out Luke it is quite large, but with all the self inflating or even backpacking bed rolls on the market one could easily replace the foam pad to cute down a little bit on the size, perhaps that nice blue foam on your found out on the AT a while back. all in all great preview, if you want snow i'd say head over to Colorado for a week and chill out in the mountains for a weekend or more.

    hey outdoor gear man my name is tony i live here in Australia these swags are very popular i own a biker swag which is about aquarter of the size of that one you have featured there i am six foot one and i fit in mine okay the thing you have to remember with these swags is you have to water proof them and to do that all you do is hose it down with water both inside and out and what happens is the fabric swells up making the swag waterproof i have been in mine in a couple of bad storms and i was warm and dry as toast as we say here in oz and after you have waterproofed it it will last you for years i know guys that have had theirs for over fifteen years and are in use almost every weekend and they will not use anything else so snow will not be a problem although the weight of the snow might break the poles i dont know do not live near snow fields but for everything else no problem hope this was of some help

      That's exactly the concept. I can have my double swag with 7cm mattress and bedding set up before you've finished your first pole. Let alone you pumping your mattress up. And the swag can survive significantly more duress on the back of the Ute than a tent ever could.

    Looks like a quality product.

  • @opinionatedcheapskate-outd2462

    An unusual find, to be sure. The big thing it likely offers is really a level of durability that no nylon tent can match. This is like a bivy version of those old canvas tents we had as a kid in boy scout summer camp. Those old-school canvas tents were set up on little wooden platforms for the summer and just left in place. Heavy thunderstorms, wind, rain, sun beating down on them, for months at a time, and they'd last years and years before wearing out. A nylon tent would never survive that kind of sustained, hard use.
    That is a tent you could likely live in for months and months. It isn't practical for backpacking or even particularly sensible for weekend car camping, where you can get something bigger and more comfortable for a lot less money. But for somebody living in a tent all summer for whatever reason - this would be on my short list.

    Hi Luke... WHAZ up bud ? Just passing by with a coffee and thought I would join you. When I saw that monster tent still in the carrying case I thought... WOW, must be a 12 person Tent ! lol Surprize !
    I was thinking "All of THAT for ONE PERSON ?", Then I watched and saw that you completely understood that SOME Tents were designed to answer the specific needs of the user. ... So, the more I looked the more it made sense. I also stopped frame and examined stitching, the impressive material and overall quality. WHATEVER WE DO... Let's not stop talking about the mattress ! lol ...I could tell that you really liked it. (Nothing beats a good night sleep).
    I will look for the REVIEW just to see your overall take on this product...
    Well, I am burning daylight with a list of HONEY DO"S in front of me. So I gonna' take off.

    There are way better swags in Australia. The leaking issue will come from the seams, you're supposed to wet it in a few times for the material to expand and contract which helps seal the seams naturally without chemicals or additional material.

      Anthony Jacobs I'm having issues with YT also, buffering for every video. I have a problem with every single one of Luke's vids, the audio never syncs to the video and they've been like that from the 1st day I started watching over a year ago. I'm wondering if all these problems we're experiencing now have anything to do with the UN now controlling the Internet?

    • @anthonyjacobs6790
      @anthonyjacobs6790 Před 7 lety

      Tyler Buchholz, they used to play ok, the problems have started recently. I'm not a techie, but think it may be something to do with a recent software update. It seems to effect random authors/publishers, but does seem to be "all or nothing."
      Interestingly, I have only had the problem with US or Pro-Israel videos. European anti-Western/anti-Jewish/anti-American crap always plays well. So yeah, maybe it is something to do with the UN, but I'm more inclined to it just being some random technical issue.

      That's the point of them - farmers throw them in the back of their ute (truck) or on their horse. I use a smaller swag when I go motorcycle touring. They get rolled out on floors as an extra bed, next to campfires, in the back of trucks, at festivals and fairs, etc. They're tough, comfortable, quick to set up, and reliable. If you are inside or the weather is good, just don't insert the poles and use it as a mattress. When you are done in the morning, roll it up, and leave.

      Isaac Ruthen it's not a tent, it's not a bivy, it's a swag which is it's own thing in Oz, but if it was called a swag in other markets everyone would be asking "what's a swag?" so I guess they describe it as best they can. It's your all-in-one accommodation, ready to chuck in your car at the drop of a hat without any prep and just unroll when you get there, straight into a ready made bed (mattress, pillow, sleeping bag etc stay in there) protected from rain, hail, shine, snow and can last you 20yrs or more despite rough treatment. Is handy too when visiting friends etc, you've got your own bed with you (can use them inside too). A swag is not really just a shelter, it's more personal than that. If all that helps?

      Isaac Ruthen The point for me is convenience. Roll it out, stick in the poles and plant two stakes. Done. And don't forget this includes an extremely comfortable sleep pad. It is not just a shelter. It is a sleep system. The small volume is easy to keep warm. It's very good in the wind. Weight is s non issue for car camping. I love mine but it probably isn't for everyone. I like to think outside the box.

      maidofmilo but why 20 pounds, when yiu can get a 4 season dome tent, which will weigh like 3 pounds, a Klymit sleeping pad, and will last you as long as this...I just don't see the point personally for me, especially when it looks like it has less room than a Ionosphere

    If I can't carry it by foot then I'm there by car. I guess sleeping in the car would be an option if the space is restricted anyway.

    the point of this tent is to have the utmost comfort while camping for one person thats the point of this tent

    • @mutefeed

      Not really. Watch some 4WDing vids from Australia and you'll see what they're used for (for example 4wdaction & Ronny Dahl). They're basically indestructible compared to hiking tents (obviously weigh 5x as much or more), as others have said you only need to roll and unroll and slide 2-3 poles in (ie. convenient/easy setup, many guys roll the sleeping bag in to take it one step further), and most these days are freestanding so if you're dropping it between sites just to sleep and roll up again you don't even have to peg it out if you can;t be bothered (can also be perched on a stretcher to get it off the ground, another fairly common/popular practice here and there are those with inbuilt "stretchers"/frames now).
      Also that swag here would cost no more than 150-200US for (similar design and basically the same quality). We make some of the best canvas in the world too which doesn't hurt things.

      hey Outback Swags no problem some people just don't know the culture of the swag and why it's a big deal to us Aussies, I do like the look of the outback swags and I've seen ones made by Americans in other
      companies were they thought they came up with the whole design and trying to take credit for it.

    I lost interest after it taking so long to set up considering its size. Without doubt it is rugged and well made. The turn -offs are the time to set up, weight, and cost (300 bucks or more? Come on man) It has it's place but I'd skip it. I have been doing the outdoors lifestyle for decades and this is just not an efficient or practical option for me and I would guess most people.
    Cool review though and thanks for posting.
