The original swags are a lot smaller. One thing you have to do with these is to cure it, hose it down inside and out. This will make the canvas expand making it water tight, more breathable with no condensation.
You all probably dont care at all but does anybody know a trick to get back into an instagram account?
I was stupid lost my password. I would love any tricks you can give me
@Tyler Caden Instablaster ;)
@Milo Kenneth i really appreciate your reply. I found the site on google and Im in the hacking process atm.
Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
make sure you season the canvas before you take it out in the wet, this is important to ensure it does not leak through the seams
I don't think he really gives a 💩
It's a swag! Not a tent. The idea behind them is totally different. The swag is hands down the best sleep you will have outdoors. The weight/size isn't an issue when you take into account that the bedding, sleeping bag and pillow all stay in the swag. Don't compare it to a tent in your head, but more of a mobile bed you can take anywhere.
it's totally a tent. the addition of the bedding doesn't make it not be a tent. it's a tent with extras.
@Jackal Aka: Bed Roll.
I have the Kodak Canvas Swag. I've slept on the ground and with it mounted on a cot. Absolutely love it. Best tent I've owned. Plenty of room.
You review some of the most off the wall coolest stuff I would have never even looked at but now it expands my looking at gear in other areas. Keep up the reviews and getting some not so mainstream gear.
If after 20 years I've now been able to convince my wife to go camping a LOT more because of a swag, I think that says a lot. Yes we have tried various tents in the past and the wife still didn't enjoy going camping that much but when I bought her a swag boy did things change!. The ease of setting up/take down and the personal attachment you get from owning a swag is something you will only understand once you have tried and own one. You actually get more time to relax and enjoy your quick weekend camping getaway! :)
get an Australian made one, make it like a bed you have at home you leave the mattress and your bedding inside when you roll it up so it's ready for the next trip you see alot of negative comments about this but if your not Australian you don't understand why the swag is so big and apart of our culture
This is very interesting liking the ideal of setting it up for hunting. Can't wait to see it in some snow
nice to see it packed up....get an idea of the scale.
good video as always👍
Thanks. Keep showing us what is available. Look great for hunting.
I used one of these whilst touring Oz and it was great. Not for backpacking and i cannot think of a time when i would use it in cold weather.Great for use in Oz but not much else.
Cool honest review, I would like to see it in the snow as well.
Thanks for sharing Luke gonna keep my Coleman insta tent🙃
That there is a very well made swag tent, now as you pointed out Luke it is quite large, but with all the self inflating or even backpacking bed rolls on the market one could easily replace the foam pad to cute down a little bit on the size, perhaps that nice blue foam on your found out on the AT a while back. all in all great preview, if you want snow i'd say head over to Colorado for a week and chill out in the mountains for a weekend or more.
looks like its the type of tent you could build a bike trailer for and use it as a bugout tent.
Thanks for letting me know. I thought it was only me. FYI, the advert always plays fine.
hey outdoor gear man my name is tony i live here in Australia these swags are very popular i own a biker swag which is about aquarter of the size of that one you have featured there i am six foot one and i fit in mine okay the thing you have to remember with these swags is you have to water proof them and to do that all you do is hose it down with water both inside and out and what happens is the fabric swells up making the swag waterproof i have been in mine in a couple of bad storms and i was warm and dry as toast as we say here in oz and after you have waterproofed it it will last you for years i know guys that have had theirs for over fifteen years and are in use almost every weekend and they will not use anything else so snow will not be a problem although the weight of the snow might break the poles i dont know do not live near snow fields but for everything else no problem hope this was of some help
Another great review! Quick question though, what brand shirt is this in the video and others that you have done?
Love to find you follow up of this tent in rain and see if it leaks or not
Very interesting and awesome!
I have a six man tent, a full sized air mattress and pump. Half the pack size, weight and price. Liked your review. These droughts are something else! Times are changing.
That's exactly the concept. I can have my double swag with 7cm mattress and bedding set up before you've finished your first pole. Let alone you pumping your mattress up. And the swag can survive significantly more duress on the back of the Ute than a tent ever could.
That's really cool the price is what I'm worried about and I saw the price in the description and I flipped out I really wanted it to but that's a lot of money good review or preview
when i want to test anything in the rain, it never rains.
Would love to see how this things holds up in some heavy northwest weather..
I love to see tents like this and it looks well made, just don't know what sort of camp I would use it on. Dominic
Luke, good video, I am every interested in seeing how the tent would hold up with snow load. What is the weight with out the mattress Luke?Cheers
Looks like a quality product.
An unusual find, to be sure. The big thing it likely offers is really a level of durability that no nylon tent can match. This is like a bivy version of those old canvas tents we had as a kid in boy scout summer camp. Those old-school canvas tents were set up on little wooden platforms for the summer and just left in place. Heavy thunderstorms, wind, rain, sun beating down on them, for months at a time, and they'd last years and years before wearing out. A nylon tent would never survive that kind of sustained, hard use.
That is a tent you could likely live in for months and months. It isn't practical for backpacking or even particularly sensible for weekend car camping, where you can get something bigger and more comfortable for a lot less money. But for somebody living in a tent all summer for whatever reason - this would be on my short list.
I have a Kodiak swag tent that looks similar to this one it also has a 2 inch mattress but see I take the two inch mattress out and Fold It Up and it folds up small and it fits on my motorcycle perfectly along with my see the summit airpad etc etc you can take the mattress out of the swag tents and they fold up real small
Could you take it backpacking if you take the mattress out? Seems like it would make a good one man 4 season hiking tent/bivvy if you take out the mattress...
Very cool
The single swags are smaller and though they are big when you reroll them up, they are light enough to carry over the shoulder or like a sports bag on short hikes.
I use a deer cart for taking heavy stuff, most of those carts can take 500 to 700 lbs. and it's narrow enough to go down walking paths.
when will you review the comprest foam mattress?
Hi Luke... WHAZ up bud ? Just passing by with a coffee and thought I would join you. When I saw that monster tent still in the carrying case I thought... WOW, must be a 12 person Tent ! lol Surprize !
I was thinking "All of THAT for ONE PERSON ?", Then I watched and saw that you completely understood that SOME Tents were designed to answer the specific needs of the user. ... So, the more I looked the more it made sense. I also stopped frame and examined stitching, the impressive material and overall quality. WHATEVER WE DO... Let's not stop talking about the mattress ! lol ...I could tell that you really liked it. (Nothing beats a good night sleep).
I will look for the REVIEW just to see your overall take on this product...
Well, I am burning daylight with a list of HONEY DO"S in front of me. So I gonna' take off.
I alway enjoy sharing a coffee with you my friend. Tell the Beautiful Susie that We missed her today and wish her a fantastic day, as well as you Luke. Peace & Be safe.
If im gonna leave this in the car and put something that big in it there are 4 person tents that fit. Hell, I could put a huge tarp and a cot in that space. Thanks for the preview tho. Its always interesting.
I would like to see you review a Kamp cot tent and cot system some time. :-)
I want one!
Thats what most people have in Australia. Few use tents but most use swags. I have 2, a single and a double
I know it's been years, but you got any rain info on that swag pioneer
very nice
do you know what the weight is without the mattress?
Looks like the "luxury apartments" of bivy style tents! But the size and weight, are a total deal breaker.
Talking about timing i was just looking at this last night on canteen shop i think. Check out the kodiak swag.
If you don't pack the mat how small can you pack the tent?
There is a small swag available, i seen some in Oz but only 1 man, must admit felt a bit claustrophobic, a bit like a Bivi-Bag quite tight inside, i preferd just a tent tbh.
hey bud, do you know if the tent can be bought without the matress? and do you know how much it weighs without the matress
Awesome, thanks. I just like the rip stop material it's almost like canvas, very durable. I can't find tents made from that for one man.
Try out the Darche Steel Dusk To Dawn Dome Swag
There are way better swags in Australia. The leaking issue will come from the seams, you're supposed to wet it in a few times for the material to expand and contract which helps seal the seams naturally without chemicals or additional material.
This is a modified version of the traditional swag. Traditional swags are way smaller. Also don’t forget you’re paying for the mattress as well.
man that's a really nice tent. way outside my price range though.
That's def bomb proof. Not sure I'd be willing to pay that price. But with that said, being bomb proof I totally see why it costs so much. Cheers thanks for the review
***** I live in Canada so taking into account currency conversion, it's a lot of money LOL. Thanks for the response! Cheers
Git rid of the pad and use a camping pad, much smaller package and use a silver lining to keep you warmer
Great video. Unfortunately, although the audio is fine, the video keeps freezing. Any idea what I can do to solve the problem?
That is a youtube issue. I've had that happen a few times myself over the last couple of days.
- Luke
Anthony Jacobs I'm having issues with YT also, buffering for every video. I have a problem with every single one of Luke's vids, the audio never syncs to the video and they've been like that from the 1st day I started watching over a year ago. I'm wondering if all these problems we're experiencing now have anything to do with the UN now controlling the Internet?
Tyler Buchholz, they used to play ok, the problems have started recently. I'm not a techie, but think it may be something to do with a recent software update. It seems to effect random authors/publishers, but does seem to be "all or nothing."
Interestingly, I have only had the problem with US or Pro-Israel videos. European anti-Western/anti-Jewish/anti-American crap always plays well. So yeah, maybe it is something to do with the UN, but I'm more inclined to it just being some random technical issue.
Tyler Buchholz, where are my manners? Thank you for taking the time and trouble to respond, it is very kind of you and most appreciated.
Anthony Jacobs You're quite welcome, although we didn't "fix" anything unfortunately. ; )
Kinda Cool but shoot, I dunno what I'd use it for. Not really gonna gonna backpack with it, and at this point I mine as well buy a topper for my truck. Nice review either way
Haha I know what you mean. It's a very interesting design but because it is so large and at the same time, small......
It's very interesting indeed. :D
- Luke
I want one, lol
Mike
That thing looks like it could take a beating for many years
That's the point of them - farmers throw them in the back of their ute (truck) or on their horse. I use a smaller swag when I go motorcycle touring. They get rolled out on floors as an extra bed, next to campfires, in the back of trucks, at festivals and fairs, etc. They're tough, comfortable, quick to set up, and reliable. If you are inside or the weather is good, just don't insert the poles and use it as a mattress. When you are done in the morning, roll it up, and leave.
They do
So...what makes this thing so heavy given its size? Just super thick material?
I guess that and the mattress. The material is thick and you have layers of it, also zippers all over the place.
modern swags evolved out of the bedroll.
A good review, however i prefer free standing and a tent that i can sit up in, for all of the bulk and weight i would expect more.
It isn’t made for that, it is made to be slept in out in the bush where your privacy isn’t an issue
It sounds heavy duty when you zip it.
I like it, light weight gurus always have something negative to say.
If I had a dollar for every time a strange donkey wandered into my campsite...
good news luke, its snowing here in ohio so you can send it to me & i'll test it out in the snow for ya deal? lol good vid. thx
I mean you could backpack with it
sippose it has its place just as most camping gear.
I have one , it is 12 yrs old and get used ALOT, trust me you get what you pay for. Seriously tough bit of kit.
Thanks for sharing your experiences Brissifirey.
- Luke
The view count is 66,665
So close, yet so far.
oh yea australia
i'd ditch the mattress and go with a Neo-Air.
I think for the weight and size it's not worth it. Price aside you can find larger and lighter/more compact tents. The russian bivvy tent still remains supreme in my opinion
that makes me think of military stuff
killer survival as a ex serviceman theys are far too big and heavy, prefer bivi bag and sleep bag, less obtrusive, as well than this.
1Selous ya I guess
my 8 person tent weighs 12 pounds and has a screen room in the front. That tent doesn't seem the most ideal tent to purchase.
It's Australian style .....so you rock up in your landcruiser and spend under 2 minutes setting up your swag.....which can take waaaaay more abuse than a tent .
flashdamingo I love idea of it but the part that turns me away is the weight otherwise it seems awesome
+Zachery Syganiec search you tube for vid ARB skydome swag. .... its like a ultimate swag camping fantasy or something.
The weight is killer ....but your not supposed to carry it far from your vehicle.
Here in Oz you can pick up awesome dwags for under $200au on ebay.
Okay makes sense I will do that and let you know what I think
That tent look awesome I may have to look into one for car camping thank you for letting me know about it
SWAG - Scientific Wild Ass Guess
Is this thing snake proof and more importantly for Luke is it Spiderproof?
To sum up for those that havent seen the vid:
- costs a lot
- weighs a ton
- not a lot of room
- waterproof/stormproof
- so big that you could fit a refugee in it
....
Final conclusion : buy a Vango Zenith 200 instead ! 1/3th of the weight, half the price , stormproof, waterproof, and you can get your pack in your tent, a lot of room to even squeeze another person in it
Be careful with the Vango Zenith. It's known for having issues and the poles are weak.
- Luke
Maybe but i've been using mine for over 3 years in all kind of conditions (storm-weather in iceland, very cold weather in the Ardennes, ...). The only thing that failed on me was the puller on the zipper which was replaced fairly quick with a paracord one :)
I can't understand having a tent that weighs that much, and having no room to stand up or enough floor space for multiple people. It's basically the floor space of a backpacking tent with the weight of a car camping tent. What's the point?
Isaac Ruthen if you get an Australian made one there Lighter you can get them in all sizes it's not supposed to be a tent or a bivvy it's a bed and bed only
Isaac Ruthen it's not a tent, it's not a bivy, it's a swag which is it's own thing in Oz, but if it was called a swag in other markets everyone would be asking "what's a swag?" so I guess they describe it as best they can. It's your all-in-one accommodation, ready to chuck in your car at the drop of a hat without any prep and just unroll when you get there, straight into a ready made bed (mattress, pillow, sleeping bag etc stay in there) protected from rain, hail, shine, snow and can last you 20yrs or more despite rough treatment. Is handy too when visiting friends etc, you've got your own bed with you (can use them inside too). A swag is not really just a shelter, it's more personal than that. If all that helps?
Isaac Ruthen The point for me is convenience. Roll it out, stick in the poles and plant two stakes. Done. And don't forget this includes an extremely comfortable sleep pad. It is not just a shelter. It is a sleep system. The small volume is easy to keep warm. It's very good in the wind. Weight is s non issue for car camping. I love mine but it probably isn't for everyone. I like to think outside the box.
Isaac Ruthen I assume I'd last quite a long time, plus that thing looks cozy for all 4 seasons..looks ez set up perfect for the carcamp over nighter.
maidofmilo but why 20 pounds, when yiu can get a 4 season dome tent, which will weigh like 3 pounds, a Klymit sleeping pad, and will last you as long as this...I just don't see the point personally for me, especially when it looks like it has less room than a Ionosphere
Amazing donkey story lol
Adventure King Swags are better, once you season them of course
Heighth?
If I can't carry it by foot then I'm there by car. I guess sleeping in the car would be an option if the space is restricted anyway.
the point of this tent is to have the utmost comfort while camping for one person thats the point of this tent
Not really. Watch some 4WDing vids from Australia and you'll see what they're used for (for example 4wdaction & Ronny Dahl). They're basically indestructible compared to hiking tents (obviously weigh 5x as much or more), as others have said you only need to roll and unroll and slide 2-3 poles in (ie. convenient/easy setup, many guys roll the sleeping bag in to take it one step further), and most these days are freestanding so if you're dropping it between sites just to sleep and roll up again you don't even have to peg it out if you can;t be bothered (can also be perched on a stretcher to get it off the ground, another fairly common/popular practice here and there are those with inbuilt "stretchers"/frames now).
Also that swag here would cost no more than 150-200US for (similar design and basically the same quality). We make some of the best canvas in the world too which doesn't hurt things.
Or every time I've had to say "hey whose fucking donkey is this?"
its sooo huge yet its ment for one person -.-
Not a tent it is a swag
man there insanly heavey
Tbh it wouldn't be that big without the mattresses.
I don't recommend buying this tent at the moment. With my further testing it has failed in a major way! More information coming soon. - Luke
20 lbs isnt that heavy, and that isnt big enough to stop me carrying it on my back.
Australia doesn't know the meaning of making lighter and smaller gear. I have an OzTent RV5 love the tent but most of the time it just isnt practical.
its to keep poisonous snakes and spiders out
I think they messed up the name. For me personally it's a large Bivy Bag.
Claude Gobbo nope because a swag was around years before the bivvy and there Australian not American
Aussie hunter And gatherer it might be that they existed before the bivy bag, I don't know this, but a bivy bag is called bivy bag in Europe as well as in the USA or Australia, or am I wrong.
Yes true a bivvy bag is completely different and we call a bivvy bag, a bivvy bag and a swag, a swag
Aussie hunter And gatherer understood
hey Outback Swags no problem some people just don't know the culture of the swag and why it's a big deal to us Aussies, I do like the look of the outback swags and I've seen ones made by Americans in other
companies were they thought they came up with the whole design and trying to take credit for it.
Take the mattress out. Use a lighter mattress. Save weight!!
Nope........many better options for less than 20 lbs for car camping with WAY more room........
I lost interest after it taking so long to set up considering its size. Without doubt it is rugged and well made. The turn -offs are the time to set up, weight, and cost (300 bucks or more? Come on man) It has it's place but I'd skip it. I have been doing the outdoors lifestyle for decades and this is just not an efficient or practical option for me and I would guess most people.
Cool review though and thanks for posting.
NO FUCKING WALL!
😙🇦🇺🙃
I dont get it.. expensive, heavy, and obnoxiously huge pack for such a tiny tent?
I do see how well made it is, but damn.. not going to live in the thing.
This product will be discontinued. Can't believe u r reviewing it.
Ken Durham They have been made and used in Australia for many years.
looks like a bodybag to me :(
It's a swag not a tent.
Sorry, but if you're using a vehicle to carry this monster, you can just sleep in your rig & forget this piece of gear.
