NEW Renegade SCEPTER Open World Build

  • Now that we have had the 2nd major update of the current Secrets of the Obscure expansion, we get to play with new weapons on all 9 professions. Revenants can now wield Scepters, which is mainly a support weapon and has replaced the need to camp staff in a lot of endgame group encounters (Fractals, Raids, Strikes, Dungeons).
Making the new weapon work in the open world, however, wasn't as easy as expected. The weapon's damage modifiers are rather low and the barrier you can grant to yourself felt rather lackluster. That doesn't mean we can't come up with a build that's still fun to play, though! Especially since Revenant has more than enough tools in its kit to mitigate some of the Scepter's shortcomings.
For this particular build, I decided to go all in on burst damage by investing points into the Devastation and Retribution traitlines. Technically, both of these work with any of the Revenant's elite specs. But since we already have a Vindicator build ( • One-Shot EVERYTHING in... ), as well as Power ( • Open World HERALD Rift... ) and Condition ( • Herald, probably the B... ) Herald, I decided to check out the recently reworked Renegade Elite Spec instead. Boy, does it deliver...
Combining Scepter with an off-hand sword, and the Kalla and Shiro Legendary Stances makes for a build that will make short work of any enemy. Regardless of whether they're a regular mob, veteran, or even champion!

This build is probably what you really want to play, but I think the boon herald variant is so nice to play, just doing autoattacks. Very bad for soloing content, but in like drizzlewood coast you just swing that lawnmower autoattack and tag stuff :p

Yeah, unless you want Vindicator's one shot dodge ability, Herald is kind of like the "ultimate" spec for revs in the open world.

Celestial condi boon herald is very good for soloing content.

100% missed opportunity. Rev has the coolest underwater weapon(trident if I recall) that changes a little bit based on what legend you have at the time. They should 100% lean into this more. Have shiro? Add some dps vs demon to add condo, etc.
Rev is on of those classes that could have amazing variety and they display that in a random underwater weapon.

That would be downright amazing, I still hope we get some sort of revamp/fleshed out underwater content sometime, though. There was hope in EoD, but it turned out to be a rather minimal part of the overall content.

Another great build guide! Just wanted to mention, at 4:27 in regards to scepter autoattacks empowering the tether skill, they removed this after the feedback from the beta test, and now it just gains strength over time instead, no autoattacks required :D

Thanks! I got the notes mixed up, it seems 😅

I hate when they give us new specialization or weaponmastery and it's bad / not worth using because everything else is much better. I was hyped for rev scepter but - as you said - it lacks "umpf". I'll try this build nevertheless! 😙

Yeah, it's a bit of the curse of having multiple gamemodes/focuses for ANet, I think. It was truly great when using with a shield in strikes, but it's hard to get excited in the open world about it.

Might have to go get the HP to create a renegade to try this out. Generally dislike the scepter on Rev but will give it another play. Thanks for the build.

If you happen to dislike the scepter, you could always run sword/sword instead :)

    WHY renegade?

At that point I already had 2 herald and 2 vindicator builds, and ANet gave us some new toys to play with. Hard to resist :)

@@sorryyourenotawinner2506 Its toolkit lends itself incredibly well for power too, actually. The major "change" is that Icerazor's Ire becomes one of the lowest priority abilities.
To this day, it's still often taken into fractals too (albeit with sword/sword and staff, instead of scepter)
