Update on Ace - I have gotten him involved in playing some of the games czcams.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU and I can see a difference in his confidence already! My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. I am so grateful for coming upon your training techniques!
Best Westie "pet" clip on CZcams. If your learning about pet grooming watch this video. Its not always possible to hand strip pet Westies. This is the best pet clip that stays true to standard I've seen in CZcams. Groomers, watch and learn. Great job
Some comments on here saying she is being rough with the dog: please explain? As a groomer you are trained in handling the dog. You need to hold the face in certain ways to keep them still while you scissor the face. You need to hold the paws to trim around them. She is not yanking or pulling the dog in any way. Grooming your own dog is vastly different to grooming a clients. Also if you are putting scissors near a dog without handling them to keep them still then you are a bigger danger to that dog than any groomer. Also she didn’t clip his foot she caught the end of the nail when he moved (again why you have to hold parts of the dog!). She is a fab groomer and that westie is so well behaved. And that’s not even getting into the fact that yes clipping will soften the fur but it isn’t the end of the world. He’s a pet! It’s what the owner wants 🙄 jeez why watch this is you’re going to complain about a perfectly good groom!
I can't believe there are so many hateful people posting on a pet grooming video. There is no right or wrong way. If your customer is happy, you've done it correctly.
Lizzy Borden The internet makes every one angry being on computers/phones/computers for long amounts of time everyday stimulates the prefrontal cortex unnaturally and makes people more aggressive. That and opinions are like assholes every one has one and they all stink.
Many pet owners don't know how to groom a Westie or they are afraid to tell their groomer what the matter with their grooming job is. So yes, there are wrong ways to groom and shame on groomers that cab't get it right. Go back to school or watch this video.
She is good because she doesn't terrorize or choke chain this dog. Oh how I'd like to get my hands on the other kinds of people I've seen on these videos that have the dog shaking. What creeps what brats
I don't know what everyone else is looking at ? PET is the key word not SHOW. Julie seems to me to be a competent groomer that knows how to manage a dog on the table, that knows how to trim and give balance and shape to a dog. Her scissor technique looks good, yes she is quick but this doesn't mean it is incorrect. Good job Julie. A great stylish trim.
Caroline Chambers This is not trimming. Trimming is pulling the dead coat out. This is the wrong way, because it destroyes the coat. It is making the coat very soft. The coat can not be soft, THE COAT HAS TO BE THICK! If you're going to cut IT you're going to destroy the breed!!!
Whether a pet or not, the fact remains that the West Highland White Terrier is a double coated breed of dog. The hair needs to be STRIPPED and not clipped. The reason being that without removing the hair, then you increase the chances of the dog subsequently suffering from skin conditions, etc. Even with a pet you need to do basic stripping, if you want your pet's coat and skin to be healthy. Healthy dog, happy dog = longer living dog. Putting that aside, as a 20 year West Highland White Terrier owner, I find her manner and technique are lacking. She is clearly incompetent to handle the breed and she needs to stay well clear. Shame on WAHL for sponsoring this. Cringeworthy. Poor dog.
As an award-winning carrier groomer I would like to tell you how beautifully you are grooming this westie particularly impressed to see the use of the thinning shears so many groomers just don't use them in the proper way the blending the tail and the head particularly fabulous couldn't have done it better myself!
Excellent tutorial on Grooming a Westie. I love all the tips in how to hold tools, I learned a lot from this video. Julie does a great job in explaining everything.
Very instructive video Julie its difficult to teach & groom simultaneously AND EXCELLENT Westie "subject" Obviously been clipped a time or two... Double treats for this Westie boy ♥️& Double tip for Julie
Thank you for this, it was very helpful. I am starting an apprenticeship in July and have been asked to watch videos to get a good idea of what I need to do. I watched the groomer I will be working for groom a westie today and she did it almost exactly like this, but it did not have a skirt, so I'm just going to ignore the comments that are saying this is wrong. If I've learned anything from dog grooming, it's that everyone has their own way of doing things and as long as the owner is happy, that's all that matters.
I wish you were here in America! This is how I want my two Westies to look when they come home from the groomer, but no one here knows how to do what you just did! Monty looks amazing!!! My Westies are nearly 14 and 12 years old and none of the groomers I've taken them to knows how to groom our babies like this. I want to show this to our current groomer and ask that she memorize and follow every step of this video! :) We LOVE her, but my Westies NEVER come home looking as good as this boy does!!! Thank you, Julie for filming and posting this! I'm going to watch it again and get the hair spray that you use here to take to their next appointment. You are an angel and I thank God for you!
Do you take your dog to Petsmart/Petco/other "big box" pet store or a private grooming salon? The Big Box ones emphasize volume over quality and generally don't allow their groomers to hand strip because it takes a lot of time. More time spent on a dog = fewer dogs done in a day. Private salons will do this for you, albeit for a higher price tag.
The most important thing you can do when visiting the groomers is TELL them what you want. No groomer can read your mind or guess that you'd like this. Most of the time when Westies come in people prefer them super short (without skirt and long legs) because it keeps them clean and it's more manageable. Any groomer can do this but you must explain how you'd like them clipped - simple :-)
Thats why I groom my own Westie! If you want it done right you got to do it yourself and trust me it's not hard just don't skimp on getting good tools!
Pamela B Van Hecke from a groomer stand point and worked in different salons, if you pull out your phone and tell us to watch and memorize and follow every step you will have one very peeved off and insulted groomer. Being a dog groomer is a challenge on its own working with sharp objects and a moving target that dosent understand what your saying or doing. Most of the time you don’t get a good haircut because either they have a bad coat texture ( unless your dog is from a well bred line of either show dogs or your breeder is very good) most dogs from a back yard breeder or a pet shop have coats that are not right and for the life of us just don’t blend or lay nicely. OR your dogs isn’t behaving itself and causing us to not be able to complete the groom as we would like. The more wiggly and bad behaved your dog is the less we can do, can’t blend for a long time is Fido is fighting back
Great video. Thanks for posting. When I take my Westie to the groomer he looks like he is rich from Beverly Hills. When I groom him he looks like a ghetto Westie from dá hood. He actually gets compliments with the ghetto look. People ask “Is that a Westie?????”
"If you take to much bangs it almost looks like they have been hit in the face" spit my coffee out. Lol didn't see that comin. Nice trim thank you for the lesson.
Nice video! One thing I have learned when scissoring feet, is to lift up the opposite foot from the one you're scissoring. Dogs can't pull away the foot you're working on, when they're standing on it! Cheers!
Comprehensive steps for trimming; however, camera work often did not get the process in the frame. ...rather important if trimming is to be followed. Personal opinion that the Westie cut with skirt is not practical if your pet is not a show dog. Legs and skirt would not be something desired or easily handled by most people. Fur gets very tangled & ratty looking if isn't combed several times a day. Thanks for the tips; cute Westie dog!
Great Job! Now that I am not showing my Westie I do not want to spend the time stripping her. Thanks to this video I feel comfortable that I will be able to groom her using scissors and trimmers!
Ooh! That back cut is a bit close to the skin for my liking, makes me cringe - I prefer my Westie to have more protection from the sun, etc, with longer hair on top than that, but I'm not into exacting anything. Appreciate sharing of video, thank you, it is a well packed walk through, and I'm sure many people will follow this guide easily....... what a good dog this one is ...... wonder how he was brought up to be so placid, and patient with being groomed (I'd love to know other people's experience and how they manage their westie's for grooming)? That is a lovely overall shape on the final look though, just not the cut I would have on my girl, for practicality I like short/puppy cuts as she does enjoy frolicking about, and I find it easier to daily groom. This lad looks so cute though 😊
I have been a professional groomer for 35 years and have owned raised and shown westies for 43 years. Hand stripping is necessary if you want to show (Don;t like it seems to hurt dogs). Okay job but not great why weren't the feathers tapered? Blade is perfectly ok for pet groom.
this helped me a lot i love my westie but my mom makes me pay for his grooming appointments but i get only $1000 a month and its not enough for my clothes and his visits so i'm learning to groom him myself. this is a good video but i cant figure out how to do it and thats probably because im 13.
If you watch closely she is being way too rough with the poor little thing. She accidentally clipped its foot and it stopped trusting her around its feet. She needs to slow the heck down. I don't really mind the style. It is completely appropriate but just the hurried anxious movements upset the dog. She is lucky the dog has obviously been properly trained. I mean I'm sure the dog doesn't enjoy it all that much in the first place but some dogs learn to love being groomed. If you just calmly and kindly groom it, reward it and praise it then it will enjoy it more.
connor, I guess u must not be a groomer. she's not being rough with the dog. she's just trying to do her job and part of it is handling the dog so she can cut hair and not any skin. No dog I've ever groom likes theirs paws or ears being touch...specially from someone who they don't know that much (as best he sees the groomer 2hrs per month) She tries so hard to be nice that she didn't even use the table's arm with the loop to hold his head....and btw she's able to do her job this way only because that dog is an exceptional well behaved dog for the table (groomer table)
Great info for trimming! Julie definitely looks like she knows how to handle a dog. Video camera operator was too close most of the time though. Hard to tell what's going on if all you see is hair in the entire view.
With your kind of comment...I'll just tell u, you'll be surprised how many people likes this kind of hc. I've been asked to run #7c a millon times. H/C like this one cost 1/2 of one without blades.
+Gabi Maglione The people I know who have Westies (admittedly a small sample) want their Westie to look like a Westie. Even if clipped it can be done using a comb so that it doesn't clip that short. But unless you're showing, of course it's a matter of personal preference. And I suppose a lot of people don't want to spend much time on combing. My Westie and I enjoy it because it's great for bonding though.
U are right. ..I've been grooming dogs for over 10 years, and most of my clients hardly ever want to deal with combing their dogs. Also, when you leave the back longer that a #5 (that's what she used) in 3 weeks the dog looks shaggy again, so the shorter the blades the longer they can wait to bring it back to the groomer. Most owners are more about being practical while have the dog looking cleand and saving $ ....and trips to the grooming ;)
+Gabi Maglione I assure you my Westie with its longer coat looks clean. It's sad that people won't bother with combing their dogs. Grooming once a month won't make them look that clean with never combing in between. However, I do my own grooming (apologies to the professionals but I simply don't trust anyone else to work on my dog) in addition to daily combing. And dogs that are regularly combed love it. Mine tends to go to sleep while being combed or even being clipped.
Im a groomer, scissoring and blending in, takes far too long and if your not super confident with scissors you can cut chunks out of the dogs fur making it look a mess use guard's to blend in and scissors for finishing and trimming loose ends, each to their own I suppose
well good groomer do trimming even the dog is angry, owners should know that trimming cost but then you keep coat in good natural condition otherway you will wash a dog often and it's too bad for skin and if you clip that only for Pet class Westies
How do you keep the eyes so clean? My westie has eye boogers constantly on her eyes and I've tried all kinds of oils and wet wipes to try and get rid of the stains.
I would suggested having her tested for dry eye. Mine started doing the same and I discovered he had dry eye. Vet put him on antibiotic ointment and then a prescription ointment. He finished the antibiotic in 10 days but remained on the dry eye ointment for the rest of his life. It took care of the “boogers”. If the discharge started again it was a sign of an infection so he would go on another round of antibiotics.
Nice job! I have three Westies myself. I would like to know what spray you use on the head to make the hair stand up. I am assuming that it is not harmfull to the eyes?
My mum’s Westie was ‘groomed’ today by a mobile dog groomer, he looks like he’s been to the sheep shearer, awful, and she paid £25 for it (I have no idea what usual prices are). Jasper certainly looks nowhere near as lovely as the dog in this video!
renee rite These are natural ears for westies. They are born with floppy ears and about 7 weeks old they should come up (at least my scotties did at 7 weeks or so)
Alicia Chan the one i have is set as my profile pic,its hard for me to tell if hes purebred. Hes also missing alot of hair due to his old owners but im treating him for is and its growing back really fast. I would perk his ears up with my hands and he would look just like a westie :P
Awww I'm glad to hear that =) It is a little hard to tell looking at your videos, since he's a bit of a grubby puppy hehe. But from the length of his nose and the degree of his floppy ears, his body shape and tail, I'd assume he might have 1/4 mix of something there. But I love all dogs and I understand genetics so it's still possible that he's purebred. Not that it matters coz all dogs are awesome! Haha
NEVER USE RAZOR FOR A WESTIE! Dogs with hard hairs hardly lose their hair. When the hairs have reached maturity and die, they do not fall alone. It must then be trimmed. Hair removal removes the follicle that contained the dead hard coat to allow new growth and releases sebum (the natural oil of the dog's skin) to hydrate his skin properly. The growing hairs are hard, healthy, colorful and waterproof. As this guard hair grows more slowly than the undercoat, the time between grooming is lengthened. It is necessary to trim a hard-haired dog 3 to 4 times a year against a mowing every two months. The hard hair (guard hair) grows above a soft undercoat. When we shave the dog, the guard hair and undercoat become the same length but do not have the same rate of regrowth. The undercoat grows faster than the guard hair and eventually smotheres the hard hair (over time) and eliminates it completely. When mowing a hard-haired dog, under-hair becomes the main hair. This is why shaved terriers become pale, curly and soft over time. This undercoat, easily tangled, acts like a sponge with water and gets dirty quickly. Without regular brushing, the hair can fel and prevent the skin from breathing. THIS ALMOST CAUSES SKIN PROBLEMS ALWAYS. These short hairs are not hard hairs, so it falls when it dies and as the maturation cycle is much shorter than the hard hair so there is more hair loss. Conclusion: if you want to keep your DOG WITH HARD HIDES IN GOOD HEALTH and in the standards of the standard of his race, you only have to do the TRIMMER regularly without forgetting, of course, to feed it properly, do not overdo baths and do it with a shampoo for hard bristles.
Update on Ace - I have gotten him involved in playing some of the games czcams.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU and I can see a difference in his confidence already! Best Westie "pet" clip on CZcams. If your learning about pet grooming watch this video.
Its not always possible to hand strip pet Westies. This is the best pet clip that stays true to standard I've seen in CZcams. Groomers, watch and learn.
Great job
I agree this is my go to for doing my westies. None else
I am so happy to find this clip. I have always groomed my own Westies, and this clip sure helped me learn a lot more.

But does the customer know what correct grooming is?? Have they done a course to tell u whats the right way to clip or scissor?

I don't know what everyone else is looking at ? PET is the key word not SHOW. Julie seems to me to be a competent groomer that knows how to manage a dog on the table, that knows how to trim and give balance and shape to a dog. Her scissor technique looks good, yes she is quick but this doesn't mean it is incorrect. Good job Julie. A great stylish trim.

Branislav Zacek You are right. Shaving/Cutting makes The coat soft and straight. The coat has to be wiry and hard, not soft.
Whether a pet or not, the fact remains that the West Highland White Terrier is a double coated breed of dog. The hair needs to be STRIPPED and not clipped. I'm watching this in tears because I used to groom my Westie, Macie Grace. I lost her two years ago to CHF. 😢💔

Abbie Carleton your doing it right, keep educating yourself and read this book named All Breed Grooming Guide 4th edition author is Sam Kohl.

Just qualified C&G3 and enjoyed the video. Looking forward to being as quick as you.

Funny post Big Wanda!
🙄
"If you take to much bangs it almost looks like they have been hit in the face" spit my coffee out. Lol didn't see that comin. Nice trim thank you for the lesson.
Beautiful. You really respected the Westie coat!
Great video. Well explained and very helpful.
If you counter pull the natural roll of the skin, you can raise the hair over the barrel further up on the back and get rid of those clipper tracks.
He is adorable, and he seems so calm, I can't get my Yorkie to keep still. I want a Westie.
Beautiful..skillful styling..love it
Never realised just how much went into having my dogs clipped
He is adorable, like my Westie, so well behaved. Great job.👍
I hope he got a doggie treat afterwards for being such a good boy!
Well done,What a beautiful cut 🐾🐾

The only thing better than the groomer is the dog. He's a real.charmer. Westie love.
So cute and funny
Miss my WWHT everyday 🤍
Lovely well behaved dog 😘😘 just looks my dog Charlie these dogs are so loveable and cheeky to
Excellent Video - perfect for teaching me how to groom my new Westie
She is good in her job

I like it but would have liked more information on the type, make and length of the scissors used on different parts of the body.
Proof that my groomer earns every single penny I pay her.
What brand of thinners are you using? Mine just don't cut that cleanly
The best yet. Very helpful, thank you!
He’s very well behaved
As my westie wasn’t very happy about getting groomed . 😄
i learn how to groom here and all my customers love my work !and pick me over a shop or mobile grooming
Great Job! Now that I am not showing my Westie I do not want to spend the time stripping her. Thanks to this video I feel comfortable that I will be able to groom her using scissors and trimmers!
Gosh she's good . No tie down. No shaking dog here
Very nice grooming. I LIKE IT!
This is a great grooming video.
I thought the person taking the video was just a little too close, but can't fault the groomer lovely job
hi! Small world! I remember you from Dog Delight.
Best video so far besides from the Spaniard lady :) thumbs up! 👍🏻
Ooh! I have been a professional groomer for 35 years and have owned raised and shown westies for 43 years. Hand stripping is necessary if you want to show (Don;t like it seems to hurt dogs). Okay job but not great why weren't the feathers tapered? Blade is perfectly ok for pet groom.
this helped me a lot i love my westie but my mom makes me pay for his grooming appointments but i get only $1000 a month and its not enough for my clothes and his visits so i'm learning to groom him myself. this is a good video but i cant figure out how to do it and thats probably because im 13.
wow, 1000 per month as a 13 year old- what do your parents do lol
oya oya my dad manufactures and sets up security cameras for celebrities and businesses

Connor Burchfield you are right. I groom my dog, and I'm careful and slow around feet. She doesn't flinch
Great information. thanks so much. My westie thanks you.
great upload thank you for sharing does anyone know if there are any reputable groomers in the long island new york area that specialize in westies?
Great video.
I have an AGC 2 speed clipper with 4FC, 5FC, & 10 blades. What blades do I use where?
ME ENCANTO EL TUTORIAL, QUIERO SABER QUE NUMERO DE CUCHILLAS UTILIZA PARA HACER EL GROOMER PORFAVOR RESPONDAN
Hola ella utilizo una 5f. ;-)
Great info for trimming! Julie definitely looks like she knows how to handle a dog. Video camera operator was too close most of the time though. Hard to tell what's going on if all you see is hair in the entire view.
creo que la tecnica de un west highlland es el stripping no con maquina hasta donde tengo entendido
Pero el corte comercial es con maquina

Good afternoon. tell me how many millimeters you leave on your back.what kind of nozzle do you use?
I only cut my dog hair in the summer, the rest of the year I just pay for his cut but this is very helpful thanks.
What’s a good whitening shampoo?
Great video. Shame no one checked the spelling at the start! "Highliand"?!
Its just a typo!
great video thank you!
I can't imagine anyone who would want their Westie clipped almost down to the skin like that! Yikes! However a nice job on the tail and head.
Mine tends to go to sleep while being combed or even being clipped.

well done
Très bien, vous avez la main
Great job! 👌😁
Hey Shea...have you seen this video on grooming Wastes?
I loved it 😍
thank you !
Im a groomer, scissoring and blending in, takes far too long and if your not super confident with scissors you can cut chunks out of the dogs fur making it look a mess use guard's to blend in and scissors for finishing and trimming loose ends, each to their own I suppose
Very nice
well good groomer do trimming even the dog is angry, owners should know that trimming cost but then you keep coat in good natural condition otherway you will wash a dog often and it's too bad for skin and if you clip that only for Pet class Westies
such a good boy Monty❤❤
Como yo puedo conseguir una perrita de esas en rhode island
Perfekt !!!!
Que maravilloso !!!
How much does it typically cost to get westies cut like this?
Ademas con la maquina le dejo huecos en el pecho, porque no siguio el verso del pelo
Could you please link to this products?
Do you still groom westies? If you do can you give the blade sizes?
She used the 5F
5 Clippers is a bit short especially on the right side of the dog's neck. Looks like it was too close to the neck skin and a little raw.
I was thinking clipper burn
*THE WESTIE SHOULD BE HAND STRIPPED, IT CAN NOT BE SHAVED! IF IT WOULD BE SHAVED OR CUT BY A MACHINE ITS COAT WILL BE DESTROYED!!!*
Thank you for this I’m preparing to get a puppy and wondering what to do for grooming
uuggg no matter how many times I tell my groomer my westie never comes back with a rounded head. so annoying.
witch scissors you use (the colorful) i search it ^^
Nice job! I have three Westies myself. I would like to know what spray you use on the head to make the hair stand up. I am assuming that it is not harmfull to the eyes?

Obtigado! Parabéns!
My mum’s Westie was ‘groomed’ today by a mobile dog groomer, he looks like he’s been to the sheep shearer, awful, and she paid £25 for it (I have no idea what usual prices are). Jasper certainly looks nowhere near as lovely as the dog in this video!
i preffer hand stripping,
Well lets hand strip your hair see how you like it.
how to train
pls
thank you :-)
What type of curved scissors and thinning shears do you use? Where can they be purchased?
I had to get my curved scissors at a dog show. I couldn’t find them anywhere!
love ❤
ME ENCANTO LA PELUQUERA
alguien en español!
are you cutting the ear?!
Do westies have natural floppy ears or are they born like this? My westie has floppy ears
renee rite These are natural ears for westies. They are born with floppy ears and about 7 weeks old they should come up (at least my scotties did at 7 weeks or so)
Michele B oh,im starting to think mine is a westiepoo,westie/poodle mix. Maybe that explains the floppy ears and curly hair :)
renee rite Sometimes westies have floppy ears. Even purebred pedigree blah blah ones. I have one myself and she's awesome!
Organdi you lost me at hello 🥒
The only sure comment I can make is, " wouldn't let you within a mile of my Westie ".
