"Bad" Pokemon That Work Competitively.

- Pokemon Competitive Singles is an environment where those with the best Stats and Tools rise to the top.
Metagames form around these Powerful Pokemon, and sometimes this leads to seemingly "Bad" Pokemon rising up to fill gaps and punish these threats in specific ways.
Here are 3 examples of "Bad" Pokemon that have their uses in Competitive player. These examples are from Gens 3, 4 and 5 OU.
Is this insane? Absolutely.

Some will never figure out how to get Sceptile in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. But famous player Jim Cool is well aware of the Best Sceptile Moveset in Competitive, and even how to Sceptile Shiny Farm. Many aren't and never will be. That's just the unfortunate reality of the world.
Arceus exists.
The below text is very relevant to many people.
Game Freak just blew all other online game development schools out of the water with this incredible new 2022 release. You're gonna need to get a game design degree online, and FAST, if you want to make a better game than this. Not even the best strategy games android reddit could hold a candle to this breathtaking Next generation competitive Pokemon experience.
Scream Tail is the Jigglypuff of our wildest dreams. It has been buffed with some higher statistics and the incredible ability, Protosynthesis. Gen 9 Competitive Pokemon wouldn't be the same without this powerful pink blob. He kinda looks like someone I met in one of my game design and development courses.
Gen 9 Pokemon Showdown is one of the greatest online gaming sites in history. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on CZcams. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

It was a great video! Highly recommended
Jimothy, can you make a double adv team that consist of kyogre, thanks
Butterfree has 2 tournament wins in gen 3 💀
so what you're saying is that butterfree has proven itself with results? Sounds like a good pokemon to me.
Did well in VGC a couple times, too. Smeargle speed accurate Powder and Tailwind!
@DarkAuraLord don't call that flying rat good
Butterfree performs better than Blaziken on average
Funny sleep powder goes brrrrrr
My favorite “bad” Pokémon is Quagsire. He is unaware of the opponent’s strategies.
Quagsire in any game where he has unaware is not a bad pokemon
And occasionally he absorbs the tears of the opponent when they realize he indeed is aware.
@@noysam3570 "aware" is not an ability in pokemon, you might be thinking of clodsire's water absorb ability by mistake
quagsire has water absord as well which makes him "aware"
@@imfaf8990the fact he drinks the water is indeed a sign he is “aware”
*A few years later*
Gen 11 "Bad" Pokemon: Latios, Volcarona, Landorus-Therian...
sword dogo in PU :p
Arceus in uu
My favorite Banette gaming moment was when my opponent accidentally tricked a choice band onto it, turning it into a surprisingly decent sweeper.
I will never get tired of Butterfree's 98% accurate sleep powder, either in competitive or in game, it rocks. My fav pokemon being awesome (and dying to a mere pebble, yes)
And then there's Vivilion who also has 91% accurate Hurricane. The little boy is an absolute menace (Sadly Beautifly still is terrible, being condemned to be a worse Mothim)
@@shytendeakatamanoir9740 Pokemon indeed weren't created equally 😢
It is very well known that the tiering system is very flawed. For example, Magcargo, One of the most powerful pokémon in every OU format, has never once been ranked officially OU.
False, he was ranked OU with the release of Teal Mask, the only reason it didn’t stay was because of Ogerpon Heartflame being in the tier. And after we all know Gholdengo paid Finch to artificially drop it to the bottom tiers so no one even tried it.
Magcargo? 30 base speed and two 4x weaknesses to 2 of the most common attacking types?
@@cyruscrompton8221they’re meming
@@Skullhawk13 DAMMIT I expected this and still fell for it
Magcargo's stats are bad because they're holding back their full power so they don't scout the planet with the power of the sun.
The only reason the pokémon world exists is because Arceus made it and Magcargo allows it to continue.
Iron Mugulis is horsing around
back in the 90s
The titular horseman
Bronzong getting access to Rain Dance is one of those seemingly insignificant details made for the sake of lore and flavor that I always loved and tried to make work in games/fangames, I never played Gen 4 competitively but I always appreciated how this became a viable thing
I will say, aside from that, Bronzong is my favorite "bad Pokemon" in the gen 6 onward era. Esp in gen 7 and 8, it's one of the few things that can reliably switch in on Tapu Lele and threaten it back.
Also could *somewhat* help with Kyurem until they realized they could Pressure stall your steel moves or run the very specific Kee Berry+sub set.
I think my favourite bad Pokémon that found a place was Ariados in Gen IV Ubers. An insane thing to say out loud but good for it.
And this is BEFORE Sticky Web was introduced
Despite everything, I still like swords dance in Gen 1 OU. Kingler has so many massive flaws but it's still really scary given the right circumstances and I just like crabs.
Everyone has their favorite/pet Swords Dance'r.
This is insane. I decided this week to try my hand at Gen 3 OU and picked Banette to be on my team for all of the reasons you listed, except I have Knock-off instead of Taunt. I’m surprised that didn’t come up, given Knock-off’s utility and limited distribution. I was kinda proud of myself for finding a viable UU mon on my OU team. You must have taught me well, Master Jim.
When I first tried out Banette I was using Knock Off too but I found it was too slow for what Banette wants to do.
Knock Off gets a lot of value on teams with a solid defensive core that can keep the game going long, but Banette doesn't stick around long at all. Taunt applies more short pressure so it makes more sense
@@jimothycoolAhaaaa! I see. Thank you for your wisdom, Master Jim. May the horse council look upon you with favor.
I think Banette could do well with dedicated baton pass (and maybe wish) support, and in that form could do well with knock off
Qwilfish also has a niche in Gen 7 and Gen 8 National Dex as a secondary swift swimmer with Z-Explosion. I ran it on a rather competitive Pixelmon server and it won a few tournaments.
I'll never forget the Chatot I used to sweep 3 legendaries on gen 8 AG on showdown. Yes it was bottom of the ladder. I just spammed chatter and boomburst while the dude kept hitting himself
Mewtwo scared of Qwilfish, never thought I’d see the day😔
Lmao funny
My favorite banned mon is eaily Gen 9 Relicanth. The addition of scale shot and wave crash just made it unstoppable. The amount of Chi Yu I've seen deleted from existence via a Relicanth head smash is simply innumerable
it don't get wave crash...
Yep! That's the only thing wrong with my comment
I still find it hilarious how for the first year of gen 8 VGC, Butterfree was a staple because it could redirect and had a 91% accurate Sleep move
I love Pachirisu so much I used it on several of my Pearl playthroughs, so I was quite pleased when I heard about its tournament win that it seemed rocked the whole community.
it doesn't really count as a bad pokemon since its ou ranked, but i have a pretty strange way of using gyarados in gen 3. i always find myself getting destroyed by metagross, so i wanted a really solid check to it, and gyara is perfect for that with a bulky set. i usually run it with thunder wave and 3 attacks, but on my superman stall squad i made a bulky rest set which is probably my favourite set that i've designed. with aroma support it can indefinitely wall swampert, metagross, heracross, medicham and mixed mence, while dealing huge damage or spreading paralysis
I've tried for years to make haunter and base rotom work, and base rotom works in gen 5 OU of all places. It's like a cruel joke.
If Iron Mugulus becomes a horse, would that make him Iron Mountulus?
Iron Mugulus with the As One ability is just too strong to comprehend
@@forestskilbred9461 oh no! Old Money Mug Rider :(((
All pokemon are not created equal???
Yeah we don't talk about the Jim Honchkrow era...
@@Thund3rDrag0n12 truly a dark time, where all flying types were only counted as 3/4ths of a pokemon due to the oppressive stealth rock regime.
nobo
Jimothy not mention gen 3 OU in a video challenge: impossible
As a kid, I always thought all pokemon were equal in stats for their level and the only thing differentiating the species were the typing and movesets
“Banette is a Pokémon”
-Jim Pokémon 2024
Always a new awesome video to start my day in Brazil. Thanks Jimmy, ur cool
Please please please gimmie the banette jolteon HO team paste
All Pokémon are not created equal. Especially when you're playing competitively.
I still love Ariados for being a trap passer in Gen 2 that can circumvent phazing moves with Disable and being a Toxic Spikes lead in Gen 4 Ubers that can beat Darkrai
my favourite has to be wooper evolutions chilling in ubers as a specific defensive check to the most powerful pokemon in the tier.
Gens 4 and 8 Quagsire checking Kyogre and Zacian-C respectively, gen 9 Clodsire checking Miraidon
I wanna be the 284818th person to mention how Pachirisu filled a role in vgc14 to make the gamer Sejun Park win Worlds. He has explained that the silly rat fullfilled a role that his team needed
QWILFISH MENTIONED 🎉🎉
So convinient.
How convenient
used to run cacturne in gen 6 ubers just for kyogre. ran water absorb with leaf storm sucker punch and spikes, with either focus sash or yache berry for the ice beam coverage. worked like 70% of the time but was really fun to see the scarecrow putting in work
Shoutout to Kollin7, he's one to watch out for in the future for sure...
Ariados having a niche in gen 4 ubers will never not be funny
Do any of these pokemon have French roots with their Encore?
I was informed Rhydon is Bosnian
jim i absolutely love this horse council arc, it is hilarious. i believe in you and your horsepower!
I feel like it would've been worth noting in the section about Rotom in Gen 5 that Sand Force Excadrill MIGHT be on the way out soon leaving it with only Mold Breaker which would almost definitely kill off Rotom's niche as a spin blocker with an immunity to earthquake.
Another great Jim video
Hey Jimothy! Good luck getting on the Horse Council!
Good video
great days when the pokemon can't suddenly turn into a different type
The move Soak would like a word with you.
wait till this guy hears about the AGBL menace Castform
I really like Toxicroak and Drapion since they’re both gen 4 semi viable and interesting poison types before fairy was a thing
Great video
Medicham is underrated (Not the UU Format xD) in my opionion. Yes it 's a bit slow (more so by todays standarts), but it's a pretty good wallbreaker and it's my favourite Out of all the Pokémon
This isn't particular to Smogon singles, but I found Accelgor to be an extremely useful utility mon in a gen 8 Draft League tournament I did. With its high speed, I could substitute multiple times in a row to completely invalidate my opponent's Dynamax, and then take advantage of that in multiple ways. A couple notable sets were Liechi Berry + Baton Pass, because Substitute would bring me down to 25% over 3 turns and then I could pass to my sweepers, and Encore, which messed with opponents who wanted to counter my utility. Baton Pass and U-Turn gave me a lot of flexibility with switching, and both Unburden and Sticky Hold were useful in some matchups. A very righteous bug overall.
Sorry i have been away from updating the iron mugulis playlist for sometime. If it ever is not updated again, just assume i gave up
My favorite Bad Pokémon in competitive is definitely Great Tusk in Gen 9 OU.
I respect Fake Gameplay for making good use of all these off-meta picks.
life orb swift swim ludicolo was my go-to late game cleaner when i started playing gen 4 competitively. i didn't know what i was doing, but my dear amigo would go to still town if the enemy was worn down.
this Kollin7 guy seems like he knows what hes doing! really impressive
my fav pokemon is heracross. i like that he now gets trailblaze, making him a viable moxie sweeper
I’m a fan of Rotom, a Rotom-Fan, one could say.
The story of the menace that was Parasect of all things in gen 4 VGC where everything clicked into place for it to be a genuinely good pick will never stop to amaze me. It's just a funny mushroom and still it managed to threaten mewtwo and kyogre...
even if gastrodon has been in the lower tiers in most generations, it has been used in plenty of stall teams even in gen 9 as compared to the other water/ground pokemon it has solid bulk, recover, and depending on the generation either a very solid scald or spikes. In vgc tho it has won 2 world cups in restricted formats for a reason although gen 9 may prove to be an exception with it having more solid grass types,
Qwilifish is truly my favourite niche pick in gen4 Ubers. Great utility and good MU against annoying sunstall teams and BP teams. It's even great in gen4 Farcuesubers and AG since Tspikes is so good in these tiers.
I recently played against someone with a bulky Banette and it rocked my world.
folks, I don't even play pokemon competitively, but I like the cut of this guy's jib
In a funny way, this scenario found itself to becoming emblematic of the game's themes. Yes, the ride is rough going down the road toward mastery. But after fighting tough opponents like Giovanni, it's clear that they shouldn't be tools for war
Pokemon can be designed to fill a niche, although not always capable across the board. You can engage with them socially or competitively. That's why I enjoyed it when they at least attempted to push things like contests as beyond the rote mechanics of the battle system
Competitively, in a choice between Vanilish and Garcomp, you probably want the latter as your closer. But if you want to spend all day petting funny pikachu, they thought of that too
This is the reason why Qwilfish is one of my favorite Pokémon
Banette is my favorite ghost mon with gengar. Love the cute doll :3
I found a rain team in doubles with the rain setter being Toxapex, who is far too passive to be in doubles.
My favorite “Bad” Pokémon is Raichu. Little guy won worlds and is excellent in VGC. Plus he’s cute
Mega banette should be a natural evolution. It's one of the few megas that's actually a balanced addition, looks like a normal evolution, and is for a pokemon that needs an upgrade/buff
I love quilfish my favourite gen 2 Pokémon definitely prefer it to its legends counter part
I’d say Lokix is probably my favorite “bad” pokemon. Maybe it’s recency bias, but I just love the fact that, despite how awful its stats are, that guy is still A rank in UU after all the DLC in the same tier with Scizor, Toxapex, Keldeo, and Zapdos. Tinted lens + First impression + Sucker punch and other great moves is just a busted combo to have.
Lokix is the most f it we ball mon ive seen. What a lad.
I made a ADV team with banette and yea its fun af to use
Peak conviniance in gen 4 ubers.
I feel like Ariados' niche in Gen 4 Ubers has kind of been debunked, but I still love the little guy
Flareon + wigglytuff is a usable core in gen 8 ou. They pass wishes to each other. Wigglytuff walls Dragapult while flareon does a similar job to heatran but can't be beat with fighting coverage from weavile, kartana or tapu lele
can't forget Ariados in gen 4 Ubers
I am a horse by technicality.
A real shame Gamefreak decided to remove Pain Split from Hisuian Quilfish since it would have really appreciated it with the eviolite boost.
Articuno that just won a torunament
Please talk about vgc doubles in some videos
My favorite is Blaziken. Not necessarily bad, but it gets overshadowed by Infernape. I am trying to get Blaziken to top 500 in gen3 OU and so far it works really well as an aggressive lead.
he's not bad but mantine in gen 7 OU
Mantine @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 248 HP / 100 Def / 160 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Air Slash
- Roost
- Defog
- Scald
really stally but soo good
I enjoy using dunsparce and ninjask, even though they're actually straight up pretty bad.
Eviolite dartrix is kinda ok.
Tentacruel is pretty underrated, as is rhydon and rhyperior.
Dodrio is just, sadly, outclassed.
Escavalier is my boi.
Minun is also fun but totally unhseable.
Qwillfish having its own niche? How convenient!
i do like iron mugilus but it trying to get entry into the horse caunsel??? that is blasfemy! defenitly need to stop that!
Lead qwilfish can be kinda funny in low ladder adv
My favorite is probably ADV Camerupt.
"one in gen 3" bet this took you like 1 minute to find a low tier pokemon (bannete) with a niche because in gen 3 you could look at any low tier and they probably have a niche because its gen 3
Horse, folks
Bug time.
folks, this is insane. Qwilfish is ranked even higher than Magcargo in gen 4
Just because you're an electric type doesn't mean you have Horsepower... these horse claims must be stopped
Not so much a “bad” Pokemon, but lokix has consistently been a UU threat since the start of SV which is super good for a route one bug
my favorite "bad" pokemon is Delcatty, but my favorite is umbreon idc what anyones thoughts are its goated.
Hi Jim
Speaking of qwilfish, i dont unxerstand how Overqwil fell to UU.
It has intimidate to hold opponents damage and increase their longevity
Toxic spikes
Crunch to potentially cripple opponents bulk and come in later with a physicsl attacker
Deatinity bind to bring an opponent with you, and since you intimidated it you have more controll on how much dmage they deal.
I dont get it
Bros base stat is 440
not very good stats mainly
@@username7882 You realize he’s talking about Overqwil right? The evo. With 510.
@@Rarest26 yea true i thought he was talking about how qwilfish fell to dpp uu.
Overqwil is obviously not good enough for sv ou tho hes ru right now
Wormadam-trash was the goat of gen 6 UU leads. With occa it survives a fire blast, anticipation makes you know they got it and flash fire arcanine with cc destroys common leads like azelf or scarf hydragon.
gen 6 uu is roa featured I know what I'm doing later
wouldn't sash be better though/
@@lucasgreer1736 sash isn't needed as only fire type moves can one-shot and occa lets your have more hp. Btw gyro can kill most non-sash azelfs (back then dunno of they run high hp/lower speed now)
I ran gyro rocks toxic protect. Dunno the exact spreads tho as i have lost my pc back when. But it was heavy spdef (dunno if 252 or something like 156 and rest in def tho) no speed IVs and neg speed pos spdef nature. It's pretty decent as a physical wall with it's typing aswell. The strat is either tank a fire blast and rocks up then switch into arcanine or instant switch if you think you need more hp on it. You can run a cleric if you want a balance team but offense (not HO just offense) is what worked better imo. With a cleric for the initial fire blast wormadam can wall and stall nearly the whole meta tho.
No mewtwo! Dont go into cerulean cave it’s too dangerous!
Don´t let this video distract you from the fact that, believe it or not; Cloyster has been on thin ice in Generation 5 OU.
brother, that ice got shattered
I wrote this pun and you simply have to let it die I'm ashamed of my words and my deeds
Is there any "Bad" Pokémon that work competitively in later gens?
Avalugg is probably the main one, though stuff like Slither Wing and base Muk might be worth mentioning.
Why was ghost type physical what were they thinking 💀
all pokemon are not created equal
Am I missing something? Can't the horses just absolutely wreck the mug? Like, even if he's tough, couldn't they form a Horsetron of sorts to combat him?
Its the handle- that provides it a magical degree of immunity against beings that have no fingers.
I like smeargle and shuckle
Bannette also checks BS spore users specifically breloom.
