So the moral of the story is even death can't change what's in one's fate, the death/grim reaper tried to spare the girl but the fate wouldn't allow it and so the Grim still had to reap the girl's soul ...

after he touched the scythe, the statue of death moved and let go of the scythe, which he then hit and the stone came of of it. he was about to reap the girls soul with it, but she heard church bells ringing so she had to go back to her orphanage. he spared her but on the way back a carriage hit her at high speed, killing her, and she turned into the reaper’s partner

I think the death came to collect her soul, because he knows the girl will die soon as she will be hit by the horse and carriage. But if death collects her soul, she will not be able to be a ghost. So the death lets her died, and brings the ghost girl with him. I guess?
