I found using some zip ties to secure the wire shroud on the top helps eliminate harmonic noise where the shroud resonates at its harmonic frequency helps huge. When running use you hand to put pressure on various point on the shroud. When you can make the noise go away place a zip tie there between two of the shroud wires which then doesn’t allow the wire to resonate and make noise anymore. Explaining this is difficult but I think you get the point. Also putting small rubber pieces between the coil and the wire mess on the outside where similar harmonic noises happen works well too. 4-5 placed zip ties and half a dozen soft rubber pads eliminated most all of these annoying harmonics on my unit. Thanks for the video.
I geeked out on HVAC when my furnace died. As a mechanical engineer I enjoy this stuff and after seeing the quality of work the previous "professionals" had done on my 1954 house I redid EVERYTHING including the ducting and switching from a gas furnace to a dual fuel heat pump/ gas furnace setup. I wish I would have had your channel 6 years ago when I was doing this as it probably would have saved me a lot of time.
Hope this helps, the soft starts actually work and are not snake oil. I have a Firman generator from Costco, output is 6750watts on propane. Would trip out when trying to run the AC. I installed Hyperstart's SureStart SS1B08-16SN on my AC unit that had a ZP29K5E compressor with a RLA of 15.3A. I am able to run my AC with the Firman and as a nice bonus the softstart got rid of the start up "slam" that used to wake me up at night. It's been running for 2 years now no issues, I had a few questions during install and the Hyper Engineering support was fantastic. Took less than an hour.
Now if my next door neighbor would do something about HIS noisy compressor!! 😂😂😂
I love that bit. Love it! Thanks for letting me know about it.
Thank you, I just had a new unit replaced. It's loud. I'm going to look into this tomorrow. 👍
You are so awesome for posting these videos 🙌
You can use fiberglass or rockwool but it has to be covered in plastic so it doesn't get wet, or find a use jacket from an AC shop. Most manufactures say 18"s around and open to top.
I have the self-installed EasyStart for my Carrier 4-ton unit. It allows my to run the A/C when using my Firman Tri-Fuel Generator and is quieter. (BTW .... I don't do Instagram or Facebook).
Yes your correct. I just took mine apart and cleaned it took off all the side panels and it was a hell of a time putting them back on after I cleaned it all up.
You are way off bro, the purpose of the fan is to extract heat from the COILS, that’s the whole idea of the refrigeration cycle. Some compressors like Trane equipment come wrapped from the factory, but it costs a lot extra to wrap the compressor on millions of units so most companies don’t.
Good evening and I hope that you are doing well. Thank you very much for the tips that you provided in this video! Besides the compressor jacket, I really need to look into installing the easy start kit as well. My unit is working fine, but it does make a quick yet aggravating noise right when it cuts on.
I just finished watching your video on how to easily clean the unit for summer. That being said, you’ve earned yourself a new subscriber here. Thanks again and take care.
👍🏻💯
Thanks for these videos. So helpful!
TKS. FOR. THE. TIPS. !!
Hola 👋 Gracias for sharing your knowledge with us your followers I will share and recommend your channel with friends and family 😊Gracias and you have a great day now!!!!Saludos!!!👋😃👋
Another source of noise is the line set from the compressor to the furnace. We have one that runs vertically in an exterior wall. It was touching the drywall, making a super loud buzzing sound in the house. Moving the line set away from the drywall helped a lot, but it's still annoying to be in that room.
Hi, I have the same issue here, did you come up with any solutions?
@@qingchang1480 It helped a lot when we moved the tube so it doesn't the drywall. But we weren't able to completely eliminate the noise. That would probably require running a new line.
do you have a recommendation for a hard start kit.. after watching your video.. i decided since my ac unit is going on (from date of manufacture) 10 yrs.. im going to replace the capacitor for safe measure. and maybe add a hard start kit while im at it.
Nice thank you great information 😊
Doesn't that jacket increase the amount of heat around the compressor, and therefore also shorten the lifespan of the compressor?
It’s minimal, because some nicer units come with a compressor jacket. The cheaper ones do not.
@@diyhvacguy Isn’t the compressor refrigerant cooled rather than air cooled anyway?
@@sandramays795 was wondering the same
@@sandramays795 yes the compressor is cooled by the returning refrigerant from the evap coil unless the system charge is incorrect
it does reduce compressor life span iv been in the Hvac biz for 30 years seen it many times 😂 easy service call
i rip those off and hose down the over heathing comp. and sometimes AD a bunch of ice on it and voila it restarts ...most of the Time 😅
mini wall barriers( removable ) around the unit at about 20 inches around is safer an more efficient...👍
Would covering the compressor increase the heat generated inside the a/c and shorten the life of the compressor? Just wonder. Thanks for the video.
hi, and thank you for your videos, i want to know what is the blue device in the liquid line, thanks
if you do build a chimney around your ac unit keep it at least 6" off the ground so cool air can enter there and lift the hot air up and out, like a chimney, yup it has to have somewhere to go to remain efficient
wish you lived in my area. would love to have an a/c tech who's decent and honest like you seem to be.
Rheem makes different models of sound enclosures, with a different 2-digit number at the end for different compressors. Does it matter which one to pick?
Do you have a video on how to install the soft start you mention?
Couldn't find it in your channel. Tx!
The #1 Way to Make a Compressor Quiet is Evacuating the System Overnight for 12 Hrs Minimum on a New Compressor !!! You do this on a NEW Compressor install & YOU WILL BE AMAZED !!! At how quiet Compressors can be. You Can barely hear them.
After over 40 Years in the industry i Discovered this Many years ago.
Makes a HUGE DIFFERENCE !!!
Very interesting. I wonder how that works with the new tubes they use and no manifold. Supposedly they can pull down to 100-200 microns in like 10 minutes.
Mine is under warranty, if the compressor goes bad, won’t they blame it on the jacket? Won’t they say the heat can’t escape and overheated it?
When you do your decibel comparison video.. do temperature as well plz.
This seems to make sense but what about the heat generated by the compressor? Doesn't the cover create a problem in this area?
Our heat pump has a whining noise in heat mode, turns out it is the reversing valve. Would this solution be applicable there too?
Fantastic content 👌 👏 👍
Thank you so much 👍
Your amazon links , products show not available, thanks for the video info .
Does anyone have experience with: ICM870-16A Soft Start, Built-in Start Capacitor, Over/Under Voltage Monitoring, Over-Current Protection, Current 16A. It is selling for less than 1/2 the cost of the Micro Air unit. This would be for installation on a residential 3 ton Carrier AC unit with an RLA of 16 amps and a LRA of 82 amps?
The fan is supposed to cool the compressor.
Now if we put the jacket, will it not heat up the compressor for long AC runs ?
Thanks for all of your videos! I’m thinking about moving my condenser so that it’s not right under a bedroom window. I saw your video on using Stay Brite 8 to make the copper connections. I’m thinking I could probably move it as long as I can pump all the refrigerant into the condenser first. Will the condenser unit hold all the refrigerant from about 50 feet of copper lines?
To move it that far you probably would need to top it off with refrigerant. But you could totally pull the refrigerant into the unit and move it and solder the lines in yourself 👍🏼
@@diyhvacguy Awesome. Thanks! It's already got 50ft of line and I won't be lengthening the line, just moving it to another spot where the existing line would reach. So it sounds like pulling all the refrigerant from the lines into the unit would work? I was just worried about whether it can hold all the refrigerant since the lines are pretty long. Thanks for all the knowledge you've shared on thjs channel!
No heat problems with covering the compressor ?
Also tighten the mounting screws on each fan blade. They tend to become loose too.
What about changing 2 blade fan to 4 blade?
Does the easy start significantly increase the life of the compressor? Cost-Benefit.
Good information! Thanks. If you don't mind, does keeping the compressor out of direct sunlight help the unit cool the home better? Thanks
Yes it will improve efficiently. I’d like to do a video on that soon!
@@diyhvacguy Good to hear. My neighbor did a makeshift cover with a uva/uvb cover and he says it works. I'm going to look into this. Thanks again!
Scrolls are noisy to begin with. Back in the day, the older reciprocating compressors were 1725 rpm, and were quiet. Payne units used to come with a wetsuit like compressor jacket. Would that soft start work on my well booster pump? It drags my emergency generator down because of the high starting amps.
Not sure on the well pump question. My apologies
I wish they made stuff like they did back in the day. I have a 1950s fridge in my garage and it works perfectly. It will probably out live me lol
@@diyhvacguy I checked out their website. I guess they won’t work, unless the pressure equalizes, which my well does not.
How much of a difference does that slow start (is this the same as a hard-start piggyback capacitor?) make? Could you record a before/after?
Question if I may? Does the AC Compressor will overheat adding this particular blanket and shorten its life? Well explained by the way, Thanks!
Nope, alot of manufacturers come factory with a blanket. The refrigerant cools the compressor.
Refrigerant cools the compressor internally - it is not air cooled. If anything, the blanket would further insulate the compressor from the ambient temperature.
I couldn't find your decibel comparison video you mentioned ... Could you provide a link?
Agreed where is it?
I have a Bryant AC heat pump furnace I think the transformer above where the circuit board is
Is going out it’s humming and the outside unit turns on but the blower motor doesn’t I unplugged the inside unit and let it set then plugged it back in and the blower came on a couple times then same thing would this be a bad transformer
The info on the side of the transformer is
BE151840GDD what is a replacement for the transformer
Thanks

Thanks but no thanks on your $25 a month on your patreon I’ll just go on my way
Only concern I have with the insulation cover is it keeps the compressor hotter than normally it would be because you’re insulating it. That could reduce its life. Also, you’re containing all those sound energy to within the compressor. Yeah that sounds kind of crazy, but does that affect the life of the compressor? Nothing comes for free! I think I’m more concerned with the insulation aspect and keeping an already hot compressor much hotter. It’s all a trade off at the end of the day ! Thanks for the video.
The refrigerant keeps the unit cool. Some units have a factory jacket. I think it’s a money thing. They don’t want to spend $50/unit for it.
@@diyhvacguy Damn, I have a portable unit thats loud as hell, I thought of doing this but decided against it because I thought it would overheat. Didnt even think about the constant flow of cold refrigerant going into it.
Cool
My Hvac company ended up doing a zig zag on my lines to bring down the noise? What is this procedure called? Has anyone heard of this?
Does that sound-deadening jacket prevent the heat to be removed from the compressor, shortening its life?
We live near a cottonwood tree and get a lot of "fuzzies" on our coils. Can screening be placed around the outside of the unit to reduce the amount of "fuzzies" and other airborne debris that accumulate on it?
I’m sure you could. I know they make a screen for the top so leaf’s and stuff don’t go inside but I’ve never seen one that goes around the whole unit
Do not put any screen on your unit. It will restrict the air flow. Just spray the coil off with a hose every so often.
Shut the unit off, a "soft" dust broom, brush "with" the coils not against them they come right off, check occasionally.
@@diyhvacguy pet screen by the foot , design and build
I unscrew the top off, and use my powerful leaf blower down inside and blow those fuzzies out. Works great 😊
this wont cause it to have excessive heat and shorten lifespan?
Would building a wall with concrete blocks on one side lessen the noise?
If the entire unit can still breath to cool itself, that will work. You're moving hot from inside the house expecting to dissipate it outside the house, and if you prevent that dissipation, then proper cooling won't be achieved, but deflecting the sound away from the house is okay. It might be nicer to use a lattice with vines instead, as the vines will also help to absorb the sound so it isn't deflected to your patio or neighbor's patio, plus, vines help with natural cooling and converting CO2 to O2,, and look much nicer than concrete blocks.
@@philreinie8976 I went ahead with the double thickness concrete block wall. It is almost as tall as the A/C unit. 1 more layer to go. I have a 1ft distance between the wall and A/C. The noise has lessened very much. I can now sleep better at night. I will continue to monitor it and see if it affects the cooling. Fall is here though so it may be pointless now lol.
How does this blanket compare to the Brinmar one?
Not sure how it compares but this one works fantastic. I’ve had it on for about 3 years now
Thank you for the tip because mine is noisy 😊
if the compressor was inside a fluid carrying vessel sound would be absorbed and waste heat discharged at the same time.
Does spraying water on the condenser to cool it make it any more efficient and does that hurt it?
I’ll actually be doing a video on this very soon! Stay tuned
@@diyhvacguyDid you do a video on this? Some critics say the minerals in tap water will do damage to the coils over time. But it does cool more effectively. I’ve tested myself.
Many times those installation blankets aren't good since it holds the heat in from the motor not allowing it to cool off causing it to run even hotter.
I’m guessing easy-start shouldn’t be used on an inverter system? It starts slowly anyhow. I’m still researching generator options.
correct if you have a inverter system should have no issues running it off a generator with low THD
could the jacket cause the compressor to overheat?
No alot of factory ones have the jackets but many manufacturers don’t use them due to additional cost
I would worry about reducing the compressor by retaining heat by wrapping that in a blanket.
People do not realize when you put bushes and fences around your outside unit you're suffocating it. Any good tech can tell that by pressure/temp readings. It would be more the HOA people concerned about hiding the unit. And those compressor jackets will kill your compressor early. Just let that baby breath. lol
My Trane came with a compressor blanket. Still going strong after 19 years.
talk about 1st world problems. "my ac is loud" LOL
Rotary compressors are always louder than a scroll type compressor.
👍
I may look at getting the jacket (around $150 CAD), but not the soft start as that thing is almost $650 CAD here. I don't like my neighbour that much 😉
lol
They put compressors inside and in the middle of the condenser for a reason; the fan will cool them off. However, if you want help out your fellow AC repair folks, by all means, tell people how to kill their compressor early by insulating and trapping in the heat. Then restrict airflow through the unit by blocking it with solid sound-proofing material. Why not go for the trifecta and tell them to just tent it or build a shed around it.
Compressor jacket0
maybe clean the inside too?
mine just vibrates like a washing machine
Lol
Your fan motor blades may be out of balance.
If you do not like the noise, probably your neighbors also....
For $99 my neighbor can just deal with it
lol
This is fake beyond belief lol
A great idea! However, being covered like this won't the compressor get hotter?
No, some compressors have a jacket from the factory. I think they quit installing them to cut costs.
Will this wrap/ sound deadened not let the pump run hotter?
And will that cause other problems?
No the refrigerant circulating coils the compressor. A lot of them have a jacket from the factory but not the cheaper ones.
