    I only use Goodman equipment, i think it is the best. Th problems wit ac units are usually the capacitors and relays, and that is the same for all units. Goodman uses Copeland compressors, and that has been aroumd for a long while.

Is it possible to do whole house with this, or does one just install several single units? Thanks for this video and if I can dial in on how to do my house I would do your membership program to get some help.

    Another good thing to mention is that the expected life of electrolytic capacitors is 5 years so anything over 5 is bonus. An honest hvac guy would recommend replacement whenever they are there working on the unit if it’s older than 5 years. It’s also nice to write on the cap the date it was installed.

  • @theuserthatishere

    not a scam, its called a business. u.s. quality cap cost $60, sell for $450. about 1/3 of profit goes to taxes. also that business has to pay for a truck, workman's comp, uniforms, tools, safety equipment. ler's also remember that employee wants health bennies and retirement and paid days off plus a lot of non profitable on the job training days. if you care to evaluate, you can't look at the price of the part and by that alone assume it's a scam. do you think doctor visits really cost thousands? i went to spain and got a root canal fot $300 usd. in california it's about ten fold. all businesses have a lot to pay for, if your boss pays you $25 an hr, realistically you cost him at least $100 and hour after all the $ it costs to keep you working legally. please consider the big picture before assuming all hvac companies are a scam

    As a former HVAC teacher, I can tell you I get tons of calls from family and friends on the first hot day of the year. Some have already had someone out, telling them they need a whole new condensing unit. In 90% of these cases, it's this $12 capacitor. I now stock them at home. The next big issue is, they have been using the wrong fuses (not time delay).

    Without the capacitor, the fan won’t start. The fan is responsible for cooling the coolant in the radiator. If the fan is not running, it doesn’t cool off the radiator so your vents blow hot air

  • @TheGadgetwiz
    @TheGadgetwiz Před 4 hodinami

    I had one company try to charge me $200 for the capacitor alone (before labor). I erased their number from my phone. I don’t mind paying high labor fees, but hiding a 20x fleecing for an easy to part is unethical as hell.

    The big deal-killer for me is the solar. I can not just go tacking stuff onto my home that does not make sense to a potential buyer, if I am concerned about resale value. Not unless it is something that I can easily remove and take with me. The central heat pump quit working years ago, and so I feel that I can not have both central and mini-split. It does not make sense to have vents in the ceiling, and mini-split both. And I don't think I can afford a costly repair or replacement at this time. Maybe a great solution if I was upgrading from window air conditioner. Getting by with a window air conditioner that I remove every winter. Nobody on my street has solar, and with Democrats wrecking the country, why would I want solar, since it makes it look like I have money or something. A solar panel would be conspicuous like a sore thumb, maybe okay if neighbors started adding solar, or I can move to a country where the people are more moral or where they do not have Democrats. So what do other people think? Is it safe to be the first person on the block to add something solar? Maybe in the countryside where people are more self-reliant and more Republican? Do solar panels make my roof more likely to leak when it rains? Can they cause damage in high winds? That device seems like a great solution for an out-building or storage shed. If not currently being used, maybe just unplug it and let it run on free solar only, until somebody is in the out-building working on a project or man-cave or whatever. Now if I could move to Ecuador where I hear that they recently have been having power outages, the solar sounds interesting, since the peak time of needing A/C tends to be a hot and sunny day. And having cool air still blowing during a power outage, sounds intriguing. But if I could do something like moving to a more civilized country, they probably already have mini-spits installed, well unless I need to replace a defective unit. You did not say much about installing the outside electrical outlet. Since it would likely be a standard 120 volt duplex outlet, I think code requires a GFI outlet. Especially since somebody might plug in power tools there or an extension cord there. I would recommend the proper weatherproof box with the cover that well covers the plug and cord, keeping the rain off of the cord connection, and not those old tiny covers that don't really protect much of anything from the rain when the plug is still inserted. Last I saw the weatherproof metal box at the home improvement store, I think it was about $30, maybe another $30 for the GFI outlet. Make sure that the low point on the power cord is away from the plug, so that the rain water drains off away from the plug.

    Great video. HVAC is not a hard skill to acquire. You can teach yourself, but It is hard to beat instruction from a “real professional.” But when these “professionals” want to charge $21K to replace 3.5 ton split system w/gas furnace (average price was in 2020; $3,500 retail not wholesale) I take serious issue with that. In Los Angeles, Air conditioning is of great importance to me, but for $6000 a day for 3 days of work (the company that quoted me said it could take up-to 3 day max to complete), they can kiss my ass. I have a friend who is journeyman electrician, he told me to consider the cost of the unit ($3500) and multiply by 3 and what you get should be “close to the fair price” for the unit and installation. That may not always be the case, but at least this will allow me to know where in the spectrum of cost, that I can expect to pay and not get ripped off. Important: if you live in California- you cannot install your own system unless you know a contractor who will buy an HAVC unit for you. And if you screw it up, you will have serious problems with the city and they will trace that unit back to the purchaser and get that guy too. Permits are always required for this work. However, i could totally get around all that- unless the city gps tracks every hvac unit, how would they know if I managed to acquire a hvac unit and swapped it out? In closing, that company that wanted $21k just to swap out my unit, didn’t even offer to show me a cost breakdown. The had one piece of paper with 3 options for installation price: Terrible @ $16k, Bad Job at 18K, and Acceptable @ $21K. I chose “go F urself” for $0K and my unit is still working fine 4 years later. If you are a “Pro” make sure “thief” doesn’t immediately follow your title, and I know the difference, and all the complications that can arise when doing such a job- I have and can adjust/account for the unknown. Im no pro, but you don’t know how much I know… which is a lot of fun to see that “oh shit” look on peoples faces…in any applicable situation 😂

  • @OlegStepanovViking
    @OlegStepanovViking Před 4 hodinami

    I'd be cautious with drilling the holes in the bottom of the unit. First, it's going to alter the airflow which is supposed to go through the coils but now will start sucking the air from the bottom thus reducing the volume that goes through the coils. Second, the air being sucked through these holes is going to bring dust and dirt from the bottom inside the unit. Both of these effects could be negligible, though, just don't turn the bottom of your unit into a pasta strainer. It may also be a good idea to plug the holes that you've made with some sort of rubber or plastic caps and only open them while you're cleaning the unit.

    Depending on where you live in the country if you hire someone to do it that is actually an insured, licensed etc. business they are going to make money off the money they invest in parts, tools, trucks and labor. You are looking at a $280 - $350 service call, probably a little less if it's during normal working hours and they don't have to travel to far. Anyone charging $2000 or more for this type of repair should be turned into your State's Attorney General. If YOU feel qualified by all means diagnose and replace it yourself, you'll still save a significant amount of money.

    Dirty filter doesn't prevent "cool" air from going across the coil.. it's preventing warm air from passing across the coil which can freeze a coil if it gets restricted by the filter. No such thing as cold, only absence of heat, HVAC 101.

    Similar scam to the microwave rectifier. There is a reason they keep a display box of these on the counter at appliance repair shops. I have replaced two so far. Of course capacitors CAN kill you, so be careful out there. If you want to be extra safe just wear heavy rubber gloves so you can't get a shock. Instead of yanking on the wires, I personally would use some needle nose pliers and grab the crimped connector itself sp you don't pull the wire out of the connector.

    Growing up down South a long time ago, the few HVAC folk I knew usually put a few copper pennies into the drain pans to keep them clear. Copper, especially wet copper, leeches copper salts into water which kills mold, mildew and bacteria. You might see some green staining at the drain outflow, and its hard to find pure copper pennies now days, but maybe buy an ounce of copper and toss the bar in. A one ounce bar of copper is only $1.50, or use some solid copper wire. Wet copper attracts atmospheric sulfur which gives copper that green color its copper sulfate, highly deadly to molds, mildews and fungus.

    A few yrs ago the house I bought had just installed a complete system, believe me EVERYTHING was replaced & contractor did a good turn-key job. It cost the owner totally $15,000. Having background in real estate ownership and maintenance, I can tell you that I could have saved about $7000 simply doing what this video recommends. I wholeheartedly recommend ANYONE who sees a need for new air conditionin to subscribe to this channel & learn the HVAC basics and hopefully more. Just like automotive knowledge and maintenance, a majority of our nation’s population knows virtually nothing about HVAC stuff. Knowledge is a powerful thing!
